1up Manhunt 2 Wii review

Tristam said:
I'm inclined to side with 1up here. Not that their editors always get it right (e.g., UG&G review -- sorry Parish, you're still good in my book), but the IGN editors pimped Manhunt 2 and probably had to score it 7+ to save face.

Jeff Haynes reviewed it. Not Matt or Bozon.

The score is not a result of the Nintendo team hyping the game. It's not a result of a lack of games on the Wii. The score comes off the observations of a Playstation editor.

Also, I hope you guys don't trust 1UP 100% for game reviews. Otherwise you'd miss awesome stuff like SSX Blur and Trauma Center: Second Opinion.

SSX Blur rocks....but I think I'll skip Manhunt 2. I really did not like the first one. It does exactly what a lot of movies do, using gore/violence as a selling point. Because games are more than just a visual, I think this game could be terribly boring.

Of course I don't trust 1Up 100%. I don't trust any publication 100%. I don't even trust aggregate scores 100%!

My favorite game magazine is easily Edge, but just because they have a fantastic magazine layout and quality writing doesn't mean I always agree with their review scores.

Are you freaking serious?

You want 1up to take the gamerankings average into account when they assign a review score based on their editor's opinion?

Unbelievable.

It's amazing the backlash that Bioshock, Halo 3, and Orange Box have created towards review sites simply by being on the same console.

If 1up thinks the game is genuinely terrible, it should get a terrible score. If 1up thinks the game is genuinely awesome, it should get an awesome score.

None of you will be bitching if/when Super Mario Galaxy scores 9.5's and 10's across the board.
speculawyer would probably be cheering if Galaxies gets panned by critics.

You two are more alike than you think.

Why would I cheer SMG getting panned? :-?

I love Mario platformers. Super Mario 64 was one of my favorite games. And I like Super Mario Sunshine that many seem to not like.

Just because I disclose an interest, that doesn't make me a total biased hack.

No, I just want good reviews that make sense. Let me go back to my Eye of Judgment example . . . I think card battle games are stupid . . . would it be fair for me to review that game and give a 1.0? No. 1Up seems to allow people with random pet peeves to savage games that many people would like.

If game really is crap . . . buggy, broken, real short, etc. . . . pan it.
But if you don't like some random aspect of a game but many other people do like it, don't pan it . . . give it to someone else to review.

*1UP's Dont Miss These Games*
The sequel to Rockstar's first virtual snuff film has already garnered more than its share of controversy, and that's saying quite a lot. But, sadistic bastards that we are, we're intrigued (if not exactly excited) to play this brutal game with the Wii's motion-sensitive control scheme. When we saw the game at E3, the controls worked surprisingly well, allowing double-fisted hand-to-hand combat, à la Wii Sports boxing, and intuitive Wii-mote aiming for gunplay.
Sigh..................

Funny you mentioned, just finished a nice blur session today. Working on mountain 3 now. Lots of fun swearing. :D

If you hate the game that much, then provide justification and give it the 1.0 you think it deserves. An opinion is an opinion. A review should be factually correct, well-written and should have all of it's assertions (both positive and negative) justified. It should not be sanitized based on what the aggregate review score is, what score the general public expects, or how large of a budget the game has. It should be an accurate reflection of the opinion of the review on the worth of the game.

I thought the review explained perfectly why it deserved a 4. Bad graphics, nothing special controls, bad story, etc etc. 1up says the use the whole scale and this proves it, a 4 is below average, which this game clearly seems to be.

I mean fuck its not 1up's fault that an average of 7 equals shit as far as internet fanboy standards go. I'm tired of websites giving shit games 7ns as a minimum because they want to keep a somewhat good relationship with the publishers (Famitsu and IGN come to mind)

Exactly. And this only seems to happen with Wii games, almost always the central issue being the controls.

The controls in most Wii games do suck. When they work properly (or phenomenally, as in Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Zack & Wiki, Trauma Center, and so on) they can certainly enhance a game, but they're the exceptions, not the rule.

And if 1up ragged on TC's controls, they're doing it wrong. I can't vouch for SSX Blur as I haven't played it.

You're right. In the majority they do, but that doesn't mean anything 1up says about Wii controls should ever be taken seriously.

look i'm not going to buy the game, but I've rented it from work to give it a fare chance. The controls work great. I even purposly motioned the controllers in other diretions to make sure it was not a fluke and it isn't they work extremly well. the only issue I had was camera.

The atmosphere voice acting and lighting are all done very well. The story actually grabs you at the beginning because you don't know wtf is going on. I like Sharkey because he properly rated my beloved EDF 2013 game, but I think he was off base in this review. It's his opinion and this probably just isn't his type of stuff, kind of how I hate the saw and hostel movies.

I'm not a big fan of torture porn, but I'm giving this game a fair chance and it's nothing to special in the gameplay... I do really like when you have to hold the wii remote still when an enemy is piering in your direction, cool stuff.

Take the same game, pull out the somewhat creepy premise, focus on the shock factor and then pull that out, too.

It's weird - and depressing - when developers completely fail to understand what made their own games compelling. I guess at least Manhunt 2 has the excuse that it's a different team (well, three different teams, the original one particularly badly managed), unlike say DOAX2, which was just indefensibly dumb.

Friend of mine was at one of the early showings of Manhunt 2, and the first thing the Rockstar guy demoing it did was turn off the grain filter "because it gives a cleaner image". Bewildered, he asked him to turn it back on - what with it being, y'know, the point and all.

Then stabbed him in the femoral artery with a pen. Hey, you know us Manhunt fans!

Sharkey is an asshole and I love him for it. He should be fourth member at 1UP Yours, especially now that it starts sucking more each week. He's the only guy that can fill Luke's shoes and save that podcast.

And I fully support him and 1UP in using the full review scale. If you as a reviewer don't like a game, score it below 6. Stop considering "fans of the genre" and shit, and just give your honest opinion. I want to read what the reviewer thinks of a game, not what the reviewer thinks the public will think of the game.
