1Up Show 7.1 (PAX 2007, Metroid Prime 3, Leipzig GC)

1. Did I say bias at all? Anywhere? And I was speaking more to thier absolute piss poor Wii coverage. Every profit seeking organization prioritizes. If they were to give a Wii game an unfair score, however, would it affect their readership in anyway? Considering the reader reviews.

2. And if they were to be judged on by-game basis then Metroid controls blow away everything else on the console. Instead, you hear these deflective complaints about how the minus button does not work well to switch visors(not true for anybody who is at all familiar with the Wii controller), or how the down button is bad to fire missiles (it sits right above the A button, the primary firing button!) Retros default button placement is fine for, but it still allows for custimization. So in no way can you fault the game for any of these complaints.

3. 1ups score was not as drastic as others, but I still felt it was underrated. This game is a revelation for the Wii. I used the word "drastic" a little too broadly.

And the graphics were something they heavily complimented on and rightly so. So I don't think graphics were the issue. Instead it was the age old complaint of lack of buttons.
Not anything Retro can do about that.
This quote says it all: "the franchise may have lost its spot on the bleeding-edge of modern gaming," Not so, depending on where you put your focus.

1. I misinterpreted your first point. Fair enough. (Though I still think looking at reader reviews, especially for popular games at or around their release date, for evidence of ANYTHING is pretty flawed.) As to their coverage of Wii games, I've already spoken about that earlier in the thread.

2. Err, they seemed highly positive about the Wii controls aside from a few issues (I'm having troubles with the missles myself; although not so much with the visors. It all comes down to preference) and the score reflects that. Dunno what you're on about. (And you completely shrugged off my point about how the staff is not a collective whole)

3. This is entirely subjective. I could maybe see your point if their score was, in any way, negative, but 9.0 is a fantastic score. (Even if, personally, I would've scored it around a 9.5 so far.)

I think for the most part we agree then, and for the rest, agree to disagree.

That is a fantastic argument, thanks for making my day just a little bit brighter.

You know, the first few seconds of the halo theme played on guitar sound eerily similar to Rush's Tom Sawyer.

Great show....

they had my favorite mark mcdonald this time...which is cool....talking with the shane....:lol

lol @ the "halo 3....i heard it on the internets"

I'd just like to add myself to the list of people bemused by Shane's comments. Many Wii games look old and shitty. Metroid Prime 3 doesn't look old or shitty. It looks fantastic.

No enemy takes 20 shots to kill. Use the charge beam and you can take out most in two shots.

Remember Shane defending Twilight Princess' graphics on the 1up special after launch?

What a difference. Nitpicking unimportant bullshit and bitching about graphics at the same time Mark MacD. is telling us that he stopped playing more than once because the game looks so beautiful.

Shane once claimed Zelda looks comparable to Kameo. That he can say that and be so offended by Prime 3 is insane.

I've been playing Prime 3 and it looks pretty amazing considering it's on the Wii. World art is fantastic, even if the character art sucks balls for the most part, and 60fps is a big help. Effects are also good. I'm not sure what complaints Shane could be having about the graphics, unless he's been playing a lot of Killzone or Bioshock lately.

Oh, I forgot that one. Is he fucking insane?

I love realism and really hope Retro is developing a realistic FPS with one hit headshots as we speak, but complaining about that in a Metroid game? What an idiot.

he also doesn't seem to understand that you're supposed to use hyper mode pretty regularly. . .

i love shane and think his reviews are really well-written, but put in the leg work, dude

Shane can think what he likes but I wouldn't say Bioshock has a great atmosphere because of it's graphics. It's because of a whole number of things that Prime is just as strong in. No shit Bioshock looks better, but Prime's art style is such that you don't look at the game and think "Shit, needs more polys". The way the levels and structures are designed seem to keep it in mind that they're on Wii.

I agree completely. Outside of Samus (her suit design), the character design isn't too hot, but the architectural and world design is fucking incredible. So far Bryyo in particular (including the landing site of the leviathan seed -- keep an eye out for that one, Sharp, not that you can miss it) is probably the most beautiful locale of any Metroid game I've ever played.

The cutscenes are terrible in Prime. It's an example of Retro ignoring the weakness of the system. Zelda pulls them off pretty well because the character design is so well done, but really...characters aren't Retro's strong point. It's creating worlds.

And whoever made the decision at Retro to make a lower mainstream halo-esque intro should be fired.
How about a HL1-like train sequence without a train, of course. :D They could use her ship or whatever, I'm not a game designer. Looking around, enjoying the view, the atmosphere. Maybe a few robots, machinery, beautiful architecture and art all around, and no space marines. This is what they do best.

My brother actually commented at one point, "Hey, you know what this reminds me of? Halo." I said nothing because there was nothing I could say. But he drove on, relentlessly. "It has achievements too, you know." I was unmoved. The story had no satisfactory ending so I'll leave it there.

What? The characters in Twilight Princess (literally) look retarded. Not as bad as the pasted-on-faces humans in Metroid Prime 3 though. The space pirates and a lot of the other characters (like the hunters) look terrible as well. I agree though, the cutscenes look pretty bad for the most part in MP3.

When Twilight Princess came out I thought it looked terrible. Once I was a few dungeons in, I saw some nicer looking areas, but the general overworld still looks like shit. That being said, the graphics whore I am, i still think Metroid Prime 3 looks really great. Might be the Metroid whore in me talking, though. The first spaceship area was a huge turnoff.. I wasn't immediately feeling the controls / new direction of the game and everything looked really generic and boring. Plus the cutscenes are just cheesy and lame. The organic, alien environments, though, look incredible. So much attention to detail.

I still don't understand why they feel the need to say Prime 3's graphics don't look as good as Bioshock. Whenever people review DS games they don't complain about how the graphics are not as good as the Gamecube, do they? The controls in Prime were very intuitive to me, only took about 5 minutes to get used to them. I can understand the complaints about the visor switching, It took awhile for me to get used to that but as soon as I did it was great. The missiles I can see being a problem with some people but mainly if you have big hands or long fingers. And they are right about the Art Direction in this game, its phenomenal, the best I have seen in a game. The starting cut scenes were kind of lame, but after you get past that the game switches from good to omfg awsome. And about their complaints about the charge beam? Well they just suck.

What I mean by that is that because Zelda isn't portraying reality, it can get away with it's somewhat low poly character models. If you look at...say, one of the kids in Twilight Princess, your opinion is only going to be based on the art style. In Prime the things that try and look like human just look so un-human that it stands out like a sour thumb.

I beat Bioshock right before playing Prime and Prime still looks beautiful...shane just doesnt dig shooters plane and simple he never has and he now considers prime a shooter.

EDIT... and the 20 shots thing :lol :lol on veteran 2 ice missles and a power shot does the trick... if you are lucky enough to freeze one of the reptile people when they throw their boomerang the boomerang will comeback and shatter them to pieces.

i would watch out snake its going to get them.
Seriously now what stupid thing to do, just goes to show how unprofessional 1up is.
Respect one of the master minds of gaming. So childish, attention whore jokernalist.

Well apparently that's exactly what he says.

I don't really think he's "biased" or anything and he's expressed a lot of appreciation for nintendo in the past, but I just get the feeling that he's never going to get over the graphics thing. He just seems totally unwilling to accept the level of graphics that wii can generate.

He even seems hesitant to compliment mario galaxy's visuals when he's played it in the past. every time he comments on a wii game, he goes out of his way to dismiss the graphics. Even beautiful games like MP3 or Paper mario.

So anyway, I like Shanes reviews, but when it comes to wii, i'm gonna have to start taking his extreme graphics whoredom into account. It's obviously making it very hard for him to enjoy wii games. If your constantly comparing every wii game you play to bioshock, or gears of war, it's going to hamper the experience.

As someone else on this forum said, I'm looking forward to them mentioning Wii controls in every future PS3 and 360 FPS review.

I take it back; a cutscene moments you may sometimes think "needs more polys". But 95% of the game when you're playing I think everything looks perfectly realised. I get the feeling Shane's letting things that are pretty minor in the game bug him more than they need to. When I saw a scene early on I instantly knew it was the one they joked looked like a 3DO game, but the majority of the game looks really fucking nice.

But yeah, he's clearly not biased. People have their opinions, but I'll know not to worry too much about what Shane says if it's nowhere near what everybody else thinks.

I'm sure many of them would maintain dual sticks work better than Wiimote + Nunchuk.
