1Up Show 7.6 (Ratchet & Clank, Zelda PH, Uncharted)

I dunno man, at least when people say it about Halo or Mario there's a heritage that makes it a bit more believable. We'll see I guess. I feel like I'm completely blind when it comes to this game. All the doubts I ever had about it still exist, unlike Ratchet which has made a believer out of me.

What doubts do you have about Uncharted?

That it doesn't look fun to play at all, really. The video of the combat on the show didn't impress me, and I don't really care all that much if the cutscenes are well animated (which they are, don't get me wrong). The characters look slightly...odd as well. Like they're lighted differently to the world.

Pretty much.

The GOTY stuff is getting boring. Games don't live or die by that distinction.

No, but it seems like a game has to be positioned in that way this time of year to get attention.

On another note, Portal is game of the game of the game of the year, download now.

"We quit... independent..." - WTF!

I don't know what's worse at this point, Cathleen and Ryan's non-gaming related bullshit or G4.

1Up take note, THAT SUCKED.

Not sure why the combat doesn't look fun to you. It looks like it plays similarly to Gears of War, which was touted for its combat scenarios and dynamics. In fact, it was the highlight and core of the game.

Perhaps you don't like Gears of War, though?

portal will win a major website's game of the year. book it. there's no way someone worth their salt could see it through to the end and come away anything but buzzing with the possibilities for the future. front to back, it's polished, well-paced, excellently presented, and completely compelling. and the fact that it's short isn't a detriment, it's to the game's advantage. it's the gaming equivalent of a masterful short story, and i won't do anything but encourage more like it.

I liked Gears. This just doesn't look half as fun to me. Everything in Gears had this satisfying weight and power to it, you felt like you were pressing through these areas taking out everything in your path with these cool weapons.

Here, from what we've seen, you're just sliding around with no weight, the aiming seems really loose and you're in these big open areas with people all around you but the shots seem to be few and far between. Hell there's a brief clip on the show where the main character charged at a guy that was shooting him and did some hand to hand combat without barely taking a hit. Maybe it's on an easy difficulty setting or something, but the combat looked really boring to me.

I always manage to go from being unimpressed with something to sounding like a hater; I'm sure the game will be fun and all, it's getting some good press. But quite how it's getting this AAA GOTY bullshit...I have no idea.

Well, it's up there for me for sure. I don't know if I quite have as much faith in the press to report on quite how awesome it is though; some places are giving it good buzz but I fear it may end up forgotten. I really don't mind how short it is either; how many games to you start again instantly after finishing because you know how much fun it'll be now you've learned everything to try and speed through it? Cos that's exactly what I ended up doing.

1. You're "sliding around" because you're not a 400 pound steroid injected freak like those found in Gears...also, it's a game that focuses on platforming...so the main character is going to be quite agile.

2. Guns feel like they have less 'weight' because they're, I dunno, more realistic and less fantasy?

3. Aiming has been tightened and fixed in recent builds. Everyone has stated that it feels much better.

Are you sure? I finished Gears on hardcore and looking at the videos the aiming in Uncharted seems to be tighter than Gears for sure, especially when going for headshots and sniping, both the movement and the grenade mechanics are way better as well, and better AI that aren't bullet sponges, and they can flush you out with grenades instead of just rushing you soaking up damage along the way and trying to nail you with an explosive arrow like a locust elite. The gunplay is for sure faster paced than Gears, and Drake is WAY more nimble around cover spots, so if this seems boring to you, you must have been utterly fucking bored to bitter tears with Gears.

I always manage to go from being unimpressed with something to sounding like a hater; I'm sure the game will be fun and all, it's getting some good press. But quite how it's getting this AAA GOTY bullshit...I have no idea.

It's being praised because it's finally delivering on all its promises and they're addressing all the criticisms by polishing various aspects of the game, and it looks fucking phenomenal and has cutscenes that are well done and aren't fucking 15 frames per second choppy fucking shit.

Given the PS3 fall line-up this along with Ratchet are pretty much the two games to really get excited about, so I don't see how it can "end up forgotten".

How about the director and game designer of Soul Reaver then? Because that's what this is, Amy Hennig and Richard Lemarchand finally doing something that is more of their own creation since they left Crystal Dynamics but with a much, MUCH more talented team in Naughty Dog whether it's art, gameplay design or tech. These two are known for their terrific story-telling as well as clever puzzles/level design.

In response to points 1 and 2; yeah, I know. I don't want it to feel like Gears. I'm just saying why me liking Gears doesn't = me liking the combat in this game.

As for 3, I'm basing my opinions off the 1Up Show footage. Maybe playing IS believing.

Kittonwy, Gears isn't an AAA game to me, it's a fun game with a good mechanic. So I'm not trying to get in to an argument where by I say this is inferior to Gears. But there's nothing you can say that can convince me right now that this is a game I should really give two shits about. Sorry! You've made your love for the game quite clear, and more power to you, but there's no point in two people debating something when neither person is going to change their minds!

And I was talking about Portal in that last quote, not Uncharted. I don't think Uncharted is getting forgotten while a platform quietly prays for it's success.

the going independent segments were hilarious!

ratchet looked SO GOOD. awesome looking gfx. awesome looking gadgets. awesome looking gameplay.

that zelda segment made the game sound like a 5-6, especially funny cuz one of the guys talked about how they hated how someone would pull one tiny segment of negative from a huge positive... or were they trying to be ironic for the segment???

uncharted LOOKED awesome graphically, but as of yet, the gameplay just looks average, for some reason it reminds me of true crime la... and why were they talking about not seeing pop-in in an on rails segment where the jeep was traveling *towards* the camera?

The Zelda segment was a complete joke really. But they already did a big section on Phantom Hourglass with Mark and Jeremy a few months ago that was really good. They should have just skipped the whole "internet is stupid, we are smart" talk.

They probably wanted to say pop-away I guess (stuff disappearing in the distance). Same thing though. Same amount of crap needs to be rendered and kept on screen no matter if the camera moves forward or backwards

That Phantom Hourglass segment was embarrassing to watch. They didn't say anything noteworthy about the game, it looked like they were too confused.
I mean, really, Mielke is going off about he wrote a walkthrough ten years ago for a Zelda game, the most hyped Zelda of all time, in fact. Good job, man!

It's been a while since I last watched the show. Nice intro you got there.

And "Uncharted" is looking better than ever. Can't wait.

uhh, thats still subjective....I really enjoy jak games...far more than Mario games for instance...Mario is a better platformer, but has no premise....I pretty much lose interest in any game with no compelling context...RE4, is another example...I bought the game, played ten minutes and though zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

People seem to define there favourite game of the year by what eveybody else is going to like as well.... Ive played Halo 3, really liked it...but it doesnt have a chance at being my game of teh year since it isn't really my type of game... see, different people, different prefference. I could care less what wins website/magazine awards...

As for uncharted not looking as exciting as gears...I think it looks much more interesting. Gears was great though, but this appeals to me much more. It has the gameplay, graphics etc, and what looks like an vaguely interesting story...something which gears didnt have

No. For Uncharted they're using the guy who did the Firefly tv-shows.
It's got that God of War-ish flow to the music. I'm glad they got somebody good, cause older ND games usually had poor music

I'm with TheGreatDave here, Uncharted looks boring as hell. It has nothing that we haven't seen a thousand times in other videogames before and it has the most boring setting ever.

It did feel like watching the same 1 on 1 firefight over and over.

Honestly - The Zelda harshness was long overdue. Zelda has gotten stale. After WW and Minish Cap, the creativity just flew out the window.

PH looks like TP. Quality product, but after 20-some years, its beginning to get a bit f**king stale collecting rupies, saving the triangle b**ch and cutting grass and bla bla bla. I havent even played it and I can already figure out everything about it. Let me guess... There is a boomrang? And a triforce? And a master sword? and you play this little kid with mascara in a green tunic who is voiced by a masculin japanese woman only saying "heeeeeeeeeeeyaaaaaaa" "haaaaaaaaaa" "hooooooo" "aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh" ect.

Zelda WAS legendary, but it aint fail proof. Its time to head in a new direction. OOT and MM and WW was a new direction. Each of them played with the concept of Z-Trigger combat, time warp, music system, manipulating the wind etc.

The latest games have done nothing new like this.

i don't get what all of you like of R&C...i tryed the demo and i haven't been impressed at all, a side from the graphical level, the game felt "old" and easily repetitive in the gamplay mechanics...i'll wait to see the final game, but i guess it wont change much, even because lot of people seems to like it...mah ._.

Videogames are boring as hell. They have nothing in them that is any different from before. its still a machine plugged to a TV, where your able to control the game by some kind of controller device. And its just the most boring set up ever. No really it is. I did this crap back in the 70s. All games is nothing more than glorified versions of space invaders. BORING. Life is pointless. Suicide is the only way. No point in playing games. We are to 1337 for life. Life is stale and is repetitive. If your life gets a good score when your in heaven, u can pm me and call me a moron.

Taking chances is risky. But in the end, Zelda has just got the sequel syndrom. FF got it too. Resident evil too. Eventually many of these series just gets stale, and somewhere along the way, the developers will make radical different things about them to take them in a new direction. FF12 and RE4 are good examples of their respected franchises making a U-turn.

Kyoufu said:
Thats right kids, RE4 sucks.

:lol :lol :lol

Anyway Ratchet graphically was awesome but I'm not really interested in it (gameplay-wise looked exactly like R&C3 which I still enjoyed but never was a big fan of the series), Uncharted looks gorgeous (Naughty Dog are some really talented guys) and the gameplay looks fun - hopefully there will be more platforming/exploration than shooting though.

We'll see what the reviews end up saying. If the game turns out to be a GOTY winner you can PM me calling me a moron!

Heh, I doubt you will be able to play the game anyway... but keep on affirming your purchases by the view of the masses...

How is the new backstreet boys album by the way?

Whoa what's up with all the Uncharted hate? The game looks like sex, has a nice light plot in vein of Indiana Jones, cool shoot outs, and lots of platforming gameplay like Tomb Raider.

It's definitely AAA.

Uncharted does look awesome, my only slight worry is what might come after fighting pirates, have they confirmed whether or not things are going to get 'freaky' later on in the game?

Could it be the most significant adventure game since the original Tomb Raider revolutionized gaming back on PS1?
Could it be the indiana jones of gaming?
Is it the closest thing we have now to the old school lucasarts adventure games like escape from monkey island?

its all maybe.

but at the same time, there is a... feeling that it might have gotten too generic. the vibrant cartoon styles of crash and jak and daxter. Naughty dogs previous efforts are gone. replaced for a more realistic palette. the question is, that, would Uncharted have been better if it had been a real movie instead of a game, trying to be a adventure blockbuster flick?

time will tell.

They haven't confirmed it, but there have been hints

Something strange will happen.

No it's not, it's in the middle of the amazone rainforest, as revealed by the official site. Does not make it less strange tho :P
