1Up Show Ep 5.1 (The Crossing, Phoenix Wright 2, Crackdown, Calling All Cars)

Depends on the time of day you play from my personal experience. If you play during the evening, you're much more apt to find the usual suspects; Lost Planet voice mask screaming morons.

If you play late at night/early morning, you're more likely to find the guys who just want to "roll his weed" before a game of Gears starts. At least he isn't screaming/yelling/cursing into the headset.

Both incidents happened yesterday over a 4 hour span of XBL with JB and Spooka
yeah, one game the guy who started th eroom was out like 10-15 minutes rolling up while the rest of us (most of us anyway) chatted about the game...

Anyone else read that Crossing story on their webpage and get as confused as I am? Seriously, I have no idea how this game is supposed to play. Someone's going to have to dumb this down for me.

The GAF skeletons in my closet are coming back to haunt me.

That was alright. Wish they talked about Hotel Dusk more.

Also, what was the dong playing suring the Calling all Cars part? It was on during the transition between the Crackdown part and CaC.

Damn, Jaffe almost convinced me to go out and buy a PS3 tomorrow. Almost. I think I'll still wait for that first price drop.

Great interview.

Just watched the full 1up interview of Jaffe. Props to 1up for asking Jaffe those tough questions and props to Jaffe for answering them to the best of his ability. It was awesome.

Great episode, good work guys.

I want to believe The Crossing will be the Next Big Thing but I just can't seem to get hyped for it. Honestly, I doubt they will pull it off. It's going to end up being 5 minutes of HL2, and then 5 minutes of CS. What happens when the balance is off or some uber leet clan prevents anyone from getting past a certain point in the game?

The Jaffe interview was great too. I thought Jaffe was very professional through the whole thing. He obviously has a responsibility to promote his products but he wasn't afraid to tell it like it is, too.

Loved all the NeoGAF eggs too.

There's the Jaffe interview. I know the GV servers have been fetch lately.
Nice. Gamevideos doesn't seem to work properly for me tonight. Very honest and interesting interview - I liked it. Man, 1up just keeps on giving tonight.

Looking at the two 1up threads on NeoGAF right now, you must've done something right - I can't remember reading such a nearly unanimous positive reaction from GAF concerning 1up ever.

- They don't take themselves too seriously
- They seem like legitimately likable people (oh so important)
- They know their games, aren't afraid to voice somewhat unpopular opinions.
- They're in touch with us. I mean, the Dell stickers and stuff? Who else would do something like that?

mini thread hijack...

I've been trying to find an article that rated all the VC, XBLA and PSN games as "worth it" or "not worth it".

does anybody have the link? I just cannot find it by browsing or searching 1up.com

The Jaffe interview was really weird. Props as usual to Luke for asking "hard-hitting" questions, but I think most of us have other questions since the launch allotments. It was a bit disturbing that Jaffe seems to know about the same as the rest of us regarding the much-hyped "MARCH Update (TM)". Its starting to be clear that the PS3 firmware is managed by a small team of elves in Japan who don't talk to the rest of us very often.

For the first time, I got the impression Jaffe was representing Sony Corp as opposed to being a Game Developer. The role oddly suits him. I could see him as America's Phil Harrison.

hey! that's not fair! if MS didn't put up a server, i'd probably buy it for the PS3. But you do have a point: if the game was on 360, i'd likely but it for that, since that's where the majority of my friends are. :)

Why even answer this? It's a rediculous question for you to answer... why? Because we all know it's impossible to have friend's on other consoles outside of something that sports XBL... It's impossible, impossible to establish a community elsewhere... just like it's impossible there to be people with a core system, that bought a live card, and doesn't have a mic...

Do you notice a pattern here? Everytime Resistance is brought up, certain teams surface... it's a defense mechanism because they feel if one LAUNCH title can bring more to the table than anything on the service handed from the heavens themselves, there, shock, maybe more titles as well? Perhaps they realize that XBL is a grab bag as well... MS' solution doesn't mean quality online title no matter what, as it too comes down title to title... Resistance maybe ONE game, but that one game offers more than the best on the other console... And while there's a couple decent online games on the other, there's a lot not up to those titles snuff... So that arguement is null... but, man... I never stood up for something so much before, the fud's way too much...

anyways... Crackdown is looking alright... If you love sandboxers, then it'd prolly be pretty decent building up your character with some RPGish element... and I can see people amused for a lil while throwing each other around in a car or whatever... Ashame I'm gonna be away when this comes out, gonna have to Gamefly it when I'm out... Maybe it'll be like GTA:SA and VC where I can justify buying a sandboxer...

The Jaffe interview was great... talking about First-Party titles especially, (after shutting down the "put out to die" non-sense), and I agree... Third-Party is huge, and there "COULD" be one console in ten years... But I think this is what's going to decide this... This gens exclusives/first-party are going to be uber-important... Because the tons of ports now flooding the market are going to be in the consumer minds now more than ever "Well, I like these games, but are available on ALL the consoles... so, lemme see what's coming on one that will never come on another"... Because you never know, there could be a one console direction in the not near, but not so distant future, winning over people now based on what you alone have is very very important... It's not the multi-console owners you have to win right now, it's those that fly solo...

Jaffe handles PR very well -- truth be told.

There's a 20 minute interview posted on Gametrailers. Both interviews are worth a watch.
Link? You aren't talking about the Playboy mansion God of War III "announcement" interview, are you?

For every Racist random i have met on XBL i have also met a normal gamer random who enjoys planning and doesnt call me a F** or N**ger. I just add them to my friends list and usually if we end up buying the same game we play together. Usually regular gamers have regular gamer friends who enter the game and then you can add them too. The asshats probably have asshat friends. Tom clancy community is pretty strong since with the global friends you dont have to add them again everytime you get a new game comes out.

Playing R6 vegas or GRaw without a mic is insane.

So true... I can't count the number of awesome people I have met on Xbox Live. Infact the very first time I went onto Xbox Live with MechAssualt back in 2002, I randomly played against this one guy and his friend. They were really helpful and gave me alot of hints on how to get better at the game. Since then... I still play with these same guys... and I have enjoyed their company in dozens of different games on either the Xbox or Xbox 360.

I wouldn't trade voice chat for the world... and had it not been for voice chat... I would have been done with Xbox Live along time ago.

As stupid as it sounds to have friendships over Xbox Live... its a part of online gaming that is essential and has given me much satisfaction.

Community is everything. You don't have a good community. You don't have true online gaming.

Just watched the show and want to laugh at David Jaffe's reality distortion field. I also had Xbox Live since the 360 launch and there was never a point where you could not resume downloads on Xbox Live. There was never a point where Xbox Live for the Xbox 360 was in the state that the "Playstation Network" is today. For example there was never a point where you could not join and invite people to games while you were playing another game. There was never a point where the Live network and friends list was not persistent throughout everything you did on the console. Even the original Xbox supported the ability to invite/join between different games at it's launch 5 years ago (some single player games even had this ability). From Xbox 360 launch you could see everything anyone on your XBL friends list was doing, what they were playing, where they were in the game, etc.

Anyway whatever, maybe his memory is just conveniently bad. :lol Glad they didn't put too much of the Jaffe interview on the show after I heard that PR bullshit coming out of his mouth.

if jaffe manufactures any bullshit, i am inclined to think it is of his own brand and volition, not sony's.

That Jaffe interview was freaking amazing. The new intro...not so much. But overall great job, it's good to have the show back.

Hopefully the intro gets tweaked/redone in the next coming weeks.

The Jaffe interview was great. Luke mostly asked good questions although once or twice he really came across as though he were deliberately trying to make his subject angry.

I didn't know Jaffe was so well-spoken. Seems like a very intelligent dude, and I always enjoy hearing devs talk about their competition's games so enthusiastically and honestly. Don't get that a lot from Sony employees.

Edit: Also I have the same Etna figurine Shane has.

Terrible new intro.

Awesome show!

Loved the Dell post-its!

Really? I actually prefer the new intro to the previous one with the scary, oversaturated close-ups. This intro felt more natural, which is funny because it feels like the show is getting less and less natural as it goes on.

Interesting episode, although I was secretly hoping for Luke and Jaffe to get into a more heated debate. Calling All Cars (or whatever it's called) doesn't seem like it's worth $10 to me though, more like a free Flash game that's fun for 10-15 minutes.

The Crossing is a concept I've wanted to see somebody try for a few years now. Although the interview took a 90 degree turn when they suddenly said, "Imagine if the Knights Templar didn't die in 1307" :lol I hope they can make the "crossplay" concept work because I'd like to see other developers inspired to try the same in the future.

I think Jaffe and crew are aiming a little low with CAC. Just a couple more than 4 levels doesn't seem much to ask. Either that or make sure the game doesn't sell for more than $5.

Crackdown seems like such a missed opportunity without more destructable environments.

well... For 10 bucks, CAC w/ 4 player split screen n multi-player is freakin amazing man... n plus, more maps will arise via downloadable content...

Also, i agree with 1up. Crackdown looked like Hulk with co-op and some extras... though it does look kinda fun esp. co-op..

P.S. AWESOME DAVID JAFFE INTERVIEW!

RESPECT LEVEL +500 Points

Where is this weeks 1upyours btw? Its listed on 1up.com (dated tomorrow), and only on the frontpage, not the main podcast page. So is it coming tomorrow? typo? what's the deal?

the crossing's going to bomb. boring concept, boring footage, boring interview, boring templat alter france bullshit. I skipped it after trying to stay awake. Seems like they're all high concept, but lacking in pedigree to pull it off. It's going to bollocks when it release.

1up shouldn't have bother including that bit of footage and popped the jaffe interview on the show.

Oh yeah, forgot about the new intro. Didn't like it very much. The old intro was perfect.

The old intro was better. Very very in your face and gawwwhhhhish. The new one is sort of boring.

I too can't help but feel underwhelmed by The Crossing. I just don't see how the concept can work with a narrative and players knowing what to do (that aren't the lead character). How is anyone going to be content playing kill fodder for the sake of someone else's enjoyment. The one editor kind of nailed it on the head when he said "everyone's going to want to play as Gordon".

I thought about that as well. Maybe you've got to rank up some points as potential cannon fodder before you're allowed to tackle single player missions where you're the hero...

Another thing: didn't they say that as a single-player you might be dropped into an ongoing multiplayer game (and the objectives'll change for the mp teams, integrating you as sp into the game)? If so, everyone's got their own objectives and no one needs to feel slighted.

What in god's name is wrong with http://www.gamevideos.com. I swear it is the only site on the entire interwebs that kills my browser every time. Every tab and every site gone in the blink of an eye as soon as I go to Gamevideos.com.

By the way. I'm using Linux / Firefox.

Edit: Thanks for the filefront link Luke.

Shane was on fire during the Justice for all debate and his smile over Virtua Fighter 5 even though he as apparently getting his butt kicked was priceless:lol
