1up Show Episode 17

... that John Woo PS3 game looks awesome.

It does look nice, it lacks some touches here and there to make it really nice tho', like facial reactions to the surrounding gunfire. It just starts to look wierd when half of that pillar gets blown away around him and he doesn't even flinch.

I'm glad that during the tourist trophy interview, you guys keep the japanese part, instead of hearing the translator...good job

pretty good show but...I miss che!!

hopefully we'll see some of che next week...they might have done some recording on GRAW before he left, saving it for next week...well I'll keep crossing my finger :D

While I LOVE Okami's look, I too am worried about the painting interface. That's how all actions are performed in the game? Doesn't it...break the game up a lot?

No.

Hideki Kamiya is directing the game, not some no-name moron who doesn't know game design 101.

Anyway, the use of the paint brush (in terms of combat) is supplamentary, think of it as tossing out a grenade in a heated gun battle. You don't need it, but it certainly helps at certain situations.

And as for environmental puzzles, I'd rather paint some strokes on a beautiful game world than find a key/handle and use key/handle like what most games have you do.

Anyway, just saying that eventually a director and development team get so talented, you don't worry about such "fuck-ups" -- if you notice most people at GAF anticipating this game aren't saying "looks cool, hope it delivers" but rather their saying "I know this shit will deliver, please come out soon."

Great episode. Okami looks drop dead gorgeous, the show got me interested in BF2, Metroid Prime Hunters I'm still not so sure about, the whole Tourist Trophy was one of the best "off-location" segments the show has had, Darkness looks promising, as does that Chow-Yun Fat game. Looks great, actually.

The show has definitely found its way around. I'm always looking forward to the next episode, I'm really growing to like everyone in front of the camera, whereas before I was only interested in the games, now I'm finding myself more and more intersted in the 1up ways and their opinions. The show does a great job of really balancing the two. :)

I still miss Che, though. How's the situation going in Redmond? Last we heard you were still looking at places to live?

BF for Xbox 2 looks better than I thought. Never played the one for Xbox but I have played plenty of it for PC and 1942 and Veitnam.

They need less talk about their "fallen hero."

They need a Japanese speaking editor present when they interview a Japanese speaking interviewee.

A few random notes:

-Ryan wears an upside down triangle necklace. What what what.
-Metroid Prime: Hunters guy is flaaaaaaaaming.
-Okami... I dunno. I need to read into that game further...

I hadnt even thought about Che's absense till they mentioned it, and then i kinda agreed, it was better with Che. Maybe better to just not mention it.

Still, good show, nice to get a brief look at the darkness (wierd that the OPM guy said it was 3rd person when the Take2 press release says FPS).

Wow. That's the first I've ever heard of John Woo's Stranglehold. I'm not a big fan of 3rd person shooters, but man, that looked crazy. Gonna be keeping my eye on that one.

There better be a level that takes place in a hospital that's on fire.

There's little chance of this happening, but I really hope that they do all the voices in 'Stranglehold' in cantonese.

... and they look like they need counselling or something to deal with Che's departure.

I'm baffled by the Stranglehold love. It looked like typical publisher shovelware (More cinematic camera! No HUD! Big name star!), like some of resurrected Dead To Rights & Rise To Honor hybrid gameplay, with perhaps a slight touch of The Getaway thrown in.

dead 2 rights was an absolute blast when they focused on the gun play IMO. stranglehold has amazing graphics, crazy destruction, d2r gameplay with significant additions, and fucking awesome destruction and graphics. whats not to like?

also, doesnt hurt that its made by the guys who made psi-ops, which, while admittedly kinda generic looking was actually quite a good game. impressive use of physics as well (for the time).

That was definitely a good episode, much better than last week I think. A nice interview, very interesting games featured and the games weren't talked about too much or too little either.

Okami = beautiful
Metroid Prime Hunters: :(
Battlefield 2 MC: looks very fun, i like it more than GRAW
Tourist Trophy: meh

Stanglehold looked like some good mindless fun gameplay wise... But really nothing amazing at all. It has the word rental plastered all over it. What platform was the footage they had from?

And again, meh @ BF:MC.

How do they get the DS output to video? Do they have a dev system which has video out?
yeah, uh, 1up isn't done out of some dude's house, you know.

.

PS3 Dev Kit

I dont know why everyone thinks Metroid Hunters looks bad. I think its the same footage that Nintendo released this week but it looks worst on the 1up show (compression?). But I do think that Metroid Hunters guy does look flllllaaaaaammmming too :P

TT looks more appealling to me then GT... I'm not sure why, maybe it's that you can actually fall off the bike...and the first person view looks nice. Hurry up with Car damage Polyphony.

-_- -_-

I actually burst out laughing with their acting :lol.

The Milky section was by far the best. Whew, those motorcycles are hot. The game? Meh.

Was I the only one who was surprised to see Che was still featured in the intro?

Nope.

Is it just me, or does Mark feel really out of place as being an integral part of the 1up show crew?

Wow. BF2 on the 360 looks awesome. It looks very different from the PC version which I have. Anyone have any idea what the PS2 and Xbox version of BF2 look like? Is it anything like the 360 version? The show seemed to suggest that the 360 version is vastly different from the Xbox and PS2 version.

The Metroid DS game has graphics that are just painful to look at.

He seems a bit camera shy, but I like him, I think he fits in really well. Oh and that guy from CGW (I think, he was the guy talking to Ryan during the BF thing) was REALLY good, he was very articulate with great presence...he should definitely come back for future eps.

Finally got to watching this, I thought Stranglehold looks pretty cool (looks like a next-gen Dead to Rights), Tourist Trophy looks OK although I thought the first person view looked pretty sweet. MP: Hunters, I'm still waiting for more impressions of the single-player. Okami looked good. Battlefield looked great. I thought it was a really good show this week, good pace.

It's an FPS.

They didn't really show a lot of footage, just teased like the bitches they are :D

I'm personally looking forward to it, after COR I'll try anything you guys make (minus the fantasy games like Enclave :P).

Hey none of that! Enclave rocked :)

I see Max Payne is now being played by Chow Yun Fat. My favorite part is when the video fucks up while they're talking about Okami.

I think Metroid looked pretty good for a handheld game. Especially for an online one.

Battlefield looked hot too. In relation to the other post...it looks slicker than the current gen ones, but not dramatically so. He seemed to think the big difference was in improved physics. I thought it was pretty fun on the consoles, though different from the PC game obviously.

Stranglehold looks boring to me. Max Payne with greater destruction, ugly animation and enemies, etc. TT just looks tired.

Wait, Stranglehold is on the 360?! Looked current gen to me minus the particle effects.
