2 New Sonic Unleashed HD/SD version game trailers

Good work man! Damn good work. I have a friend who can't even begin to navigate the site due to his low end P.C. This will help him a lot.

The soundtrack so far is stunning. Some tracks, like Chun-nan Night and Apoto Day, are up there with Sonic 1 and Sonic CD's music.
Also: Shamar night reminds me so much of the casino level in Sonic Adventure it's crazy.

Speaking of the soundtrack, I ripped the majority of the music from the American site into mp3's and placed them in a zip file if anyone wants 'em:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HSX09L2K

Contains:

Atapos (Greece) Day and Night,

Spagonia (formally High Europe) Day,

Shamar (the desert level) Day and Night

and Chu-Nun (China) Day and Night.

Enjoy!

There. Took a while longer than I expected because I had to fight with Windows Movie Maker a bit and then I had to fight a little bit more with the Gametrailers uploader, but I've put all the video from the website in to a big 7 minute video.

This is good if you're annoyed by the fact the website, at least on the main page, tries to stream two videos and an MP3, simultaneously. I may have broadband, but give me a break.

How did I not know that you were Blaze? :lol

Wait... is that Werehog Wii footage at 6:00?! It has a different GUI than all the other Werehog clips, so I'm suspecting it is! :o

EDIT: Nevermind... it said "B" in a red circle. Must be the 360 version. D:

WTF @ different GUI's on different clips

Yeah, the game's gone through at least two or three HUD variations since it was unveiled. Some of the footage used on the website is obviously old footage. The current Werehog HUD has five circular objects at the top, a meter marked "UNLEASH", and a final meter at the bottom marked "LIFE".

Sonic's normal HUD has seen a number of its own tweaks over the months since release, though mainly font changes for stuff like the score counter, etc. (for readability).

The Locations: Shamar (daytime) video worries me. It's something I saw in the trailer for the same level. He keeps missing things he's clearly supposed to hit, flying through the air on momentum without a lot of control.

Probably just like in Rush, if you boost at a certain point, you'll sail clear over platforms. Sonic's max normal running speed isnt uncontrollably fast, so you shouldnt just sail past platforms like in the video.

EDIT: Damn Sega1991...im so optimistic about the game after watching your video its not even funny. Really going to be let down if this turns out to suck.

Of course its looking just like Sonic Rush on a console, and I had lots of fun with both of those, so maybe this will be the one Sonic 3d console game to touch all bases? At least a "B/8.0" class game. There is no way this game will suck.

At least thats what I keep telling myself.

Also the later parts of the video do seem to be from a more recent build. The werehog combat looks alot better in the later parts as well.

Hey, at least most of the second stage hasnt happened yet :lol

Only thing that has happened is a new friend, and he's only a tutorial/story person.

It's possible that something could go horribly wrong. Highly plausible, even. But when even jman is optimistic, I don't see the point in continuing to play the jaded skeptic.

There are plenty of other people on GAF to do that for us, anyway.

I don't really either to be honest, I am just much more interested in Black Knight, much more. I am still getting both versions of Unleashed at launch. It will NOT be bad, but will it be the "triumphant return"?

Would be amazing if Unleashed and Black Knight turned out to be great. Two good Sonic games back to back? It's sad that these days we actually have to actually hope for that to happen.

The game have been in development since 2006 and the Engine since 2005, I think chances are its gonna be a pretty good game

Just to give you a little background, the team has been working on the Hedgehog Engine since 2005, and on the game itself since 2006. Their goal was both to take Sonic in an interesting new direction while returning Sonic to his roots by incorporating many of the classic elements that fans loved best. So they knew that lots of speed would be key in this game being successful. To add a new flavor, they decided to invite the Werehog. IÂ’m not going to talk about him quite yet, but stay tuned for some Werehog updates in the next couple of weeks.

Wow. Well Sonic 06 was rushed because Sony and MS wanted the title out by the holiday seasons right? How long was that under development anyway?

According to members of SonicTeam, most mainline Sonic games get about two years of work put in to them. I'm not entirely sure how much I believe that. I'm sure the minute they finish one Sonic game they're already thinking about another one, but most Sonic games since the Dreamcast do not feel like they've had two years worth of polish.

Though, we do specifically know the date Sonic 2006 was started. A few months before the game dropped, a QA tester at Sega leaked the game's design document to a Sonic fansite called Sonic-Cult, I believe. There wasn't much of interest in there, but it did contain a list of every date the design document was updated, all the way up until the date it was first started.

According to that, work on the game (or, at least, the design document) started the first week of June, 2005. That means the game was developed in around 18 months, with a wounded staff (half of the team was re-assigned to work on Secret Rings midway through development).

Given the state Sonic 2006 was first shown in and the state Sonic Unleashed was first shown in, I'm skeptical about the "they've been working on the game since 2006". Conceptually? Sure, I guess I could see them throwing ideas around for a while before starting development. But as Sonic Unleashed? No way it was two years. The initial footage (the leaked trailer) showed a game that looked like it had only been in development a few months.

Besides, I wouldn't trust a Sega of America mouth piece anyway, after everything I heard out of similar guys for Sonic 2006. At best they were just really out of the loop and were going off of old information most of the time (likely, considering the game was being made an entire ocean away), and at worst they were flat out lying to make the game look better than it was ("How shitty is your game?" "So awesome."). Either way, I'm taking what this guy says with a grain of salt.

I'm willing to pick up the slack for you easily swayed mortals.

When Sega1991's trailer hit werewolf Sonic I skipped ahead, second time it happened I stopped.

Oh, FireStorm, FireStorm. Here, we had a perfectly optimistic Sonic thread till YOU showed up.:lol

Actually Teknoman, Sonic Chronicles is a great Sonic game too. So, we could have two great Sonic games in the Christmas season.

Glad to see there's a lot more platforming than previously shown in the Werehog sections. Did you see that part where he grabs an enemy and uses him to swing over to another platform? Reminded me of Ristar.

I just have to state that I categorically love that Angel Island/World Map orchestrated track from the UK site. If there's at least one thing that Sonic games have been consistent about it's the good music, and it looks like this one's no different. Good times. :D

Sonic Chronicles is an OK game but nowhere near great or even a great Sonic game (It doesn't play very Sonic-y imo).

You know you're the second person i've see say its an orchestrated version of Angel Island, yet I cant see the resemblance at all. They sound nothing alike, unless there is some other non-Sonic 3 Angel Island theme im not aware of.

There is a good reason for that. The guy who was at the helm of Ristar's development also has a position of high importance in the team thats handling Sonic Unleashed. I forget the exact titles, but there are a couple of interviews with him and another member at Gamespot.
I would get Sonic Chronicles...but I cant bring myself to play a Sonic game with a non-catchy soundtrack.

That sounds about right, actually. At least for Sonic Team USA's work, judging from the release dates and if you assume work on each game begins a bit prior to the completion of its predecessor.

Sonic Advance, technically, but it's nothing like the original. Those people were nuts back when the whistling teaser trailer came out and they're still nuts now.

No way, Sonic Team USA is complete crap. NiGHTS JoD, and Shadow the Hedgehog must of been made in 6 months, those games arent even a years worth of quality. Sonic Team USA was just OK before that with Sonic Heroes and Sonic adventure 2.

"Sonic Team USA *was complete crap," you mean. And I find it highly unlikely that Sega would let them just sit around doing jack all for a year before beginning production on each game. Their problems were primarily the result of a severe shortage of talent.

Did Sonic Team USA handle Sonic 06 as well?

That was Sonic Team Japan.... the same team making Unleashed in fact
Well, sort of. It seems like there's been a lot of staff shuffling since then, at least in the higher positions. Naka leaving left a power vacuum.

And while it brings me glee to know that ST USA can no longer run the franchise into the ground, I'm willing to give ST JP the benefit of the doubt for a bit longer. '06 is the only truly bad game they've ever made, and its development is probably the second biggest horror story in the series after X-treme. I don't expect them to ever make the sort of game we all want to see, but their track record is mostly decent.

Sonic Unleashed keeps sounding better and better, GJ Sonic Team JP

In the demo, we saw several levels that took place around the world. Levels take place in such exotic locations like Africa, Europe, Greece, and ancient China. The graphics powered by the Hedgehog engine are colourful and sharp. Best of all, after seeing a choppy, 15 frames per second demo at E3 in July, the frame rate has seriously tightened up to around 40 frames at the X08 and PlayStation Preview events. Sega is shooting for around 60 frames per second before its November release.

http://www.gamingexcellence.com/ps3/games/1409/p20081020.shtml

Also I am glad Sonic Team USA is gone.... they really know how to destroy franchises and make people hate them. They are the reason Sonic has a bad name to begin with... and now NiGHTS.

Going for 60 fps? If thats true, it's like they are really reaching for the top. Still better be put through extensive QA testing.

The only thing i'm not really liking is the whole werewolf bit - I wish SEGA would just make it about Sonic and have the only possible form be Super Sonic, nothing else.

Still, the game looks like a breath of fresh air. I agree that its speed may actually end up working against its quality, but it's still a treat to watch at the very least.

SonicTeam USA still exists, technically. It's just called SegaStudios USA now, I believe. Plus, I don't really think the "SonicTeam USA!" "SonicTeam Japan!" distinction matters any. While SonicTeam USA was off doing stinkers like Billy Hatcher, it's not like ST Japan was doing anything worthwhile.

I don't trust the "They're shooting for 60fps", either, considering that's the only site that has reported on that fact. Don't set yourself up for disappointment.

Uh guys. In the North America Nintendo Channel on your Wii, it says the game comes out today!!! O_o

I'm fucking serious!

But it's odd.

It says:

Launch Date: Oct 20th.
Coming Holiday 2008.

I suppose Oct 20 can be part of the Holiday period... right?

They were renamed to SS USA three years ago, whereas the Jun Q&A (and subsequent move back to Tokyo) is from late August. And Billy was STJ; not the world's greatest game, but from the bits I've seen, played, and read, not bad.

E: Also, can someone confirm you can actually stand/walk back? I hope this isn't too on rails, or too much holding right :( Sonic Rush didn't wasn't THIS much holding right :(

"Hold right. Press A to take Route 1, press B to take Route 2. Hold right some more."

Not sure about the behind the back segements (though you can stop moving entirely) but the 2d segments you can backtrack as much as you want. Especially since paths are hidden by breakable objects or require trick rings/springs to get to.

Really would like to know if the behind the back segments allow the camera to spin in the opposite direction in case you missed something.

You know, late thought right now, but MNC's post reminded me of it. Anyone else think the Sonic sections would be in concept 100 times better if you didn't input button presses to ensure you got to a different route in mid air but rather relied on how fast you were going and let momentum do the rest? I know, "bitching about game before playing it syndrome" and all that but it's a fairly weird thought that's keeping me on the fence about certain things in the game now.

This reminds me of Sonic Heroes when the GameCube got it a couple weeks earlier than the PS2/Xbox.

Well that would be cool, but QTE's really dont bother me that much. So either way would be fine with me.

Of course there are still multiple routes that can only be reached if Sonic is going a certain speed when he hits a ramp.
