What exactly are they trying to accomplish? How can it be effective? The longest ad I've seen is 3 hours. Who's going to watch the whole thing, except if Youtube is going through a playlist and you've fallen asleep?

Longest unskippable I've seen is 1 minute, I hope that doesn't become an trend.

I have a roommate who's just arrived from India a few months ago, and he actually LIKES watching the ads because he thinks they're interesting.

I mostly get the Shakira Crest commercial, the bh cosmetics and those awful Mike Chang ads. Which areretty short.

The long one are the Tourist attraction one. 20-45 minutes long ad to travel to Ireland of all places.

Adblock is cool, but i think its one of the reason my firefox eats up all the memory and crashes often. Doesnt work on mobile anyway

If I like the content enough, I'll stick through a 3-5 minute commercial. Youtube ain't free.

I've watched some 20 minute ones(like the one about Gorilla Glass by the Mythbuster dudes) that end up being really informative/entertaining additionally.

I hope people don't intentionally misuse Adblock however. All it takes is the time and effort to open another tab to avoid watching the commercial.

I try, for channels I watch a lot, to leave the ad running and tab elsewhere, but there's a certain threshold (usually above the 2 minute mark) where I just click skip. I remember the first time I saw a twenty minute ad, nope, nope, nope, it was longer than the video itself.

The Mythbusters one about gorilla glass was actually pretty entertaining.

Also, does YouTube track if you actually watch the ad? What does it take for the youtuber to get paid? Sometimes I skip ads for random videos, but for channels I subscribe to with videos made by people trying to do this as their actual job, I wanna make sure that they get paid.

I'm pretty sure my Adblock gets rid of those for me. The only time I've come across an ad on YouTube is when I'm on my phone or PS4.

And yes, Adblock is disabled for GAF and GAF only.

They're more like 'videos you might like!' that you are forced to watch the first few seconds of than ads. I mean they serve as ads, in the same way that TV shows with product placement serve as ads. Usually try to be more entertaining or serious, etc.

It does. I had no idea there even was ads on youtube till I was at a friends house who didn't have adblock and I thought he had some virus or something.

That is what determines how much the advertiser pays more or less. As an advertiser you can pay for pre-roll (pay every time the ad starts playing) or post-roll (every time the ad finishes).

Content makers and channel owners are paid out based on how many ad impressions they can generate.

I watched a full 20 minute commercial on youtube once and, when it ended, the video I wanted to see didn't even play. I just got a "Congratulations" screen. I think I unlocked the secrets to the universe that day.

While not a youtube commercial, AARP's 2-minute commercial has convinced me that more ads should feature Rube Goldberg machines. I saw it on TV and it lasts so long that I just waited to see when it would finally end. It's sort of hypnotic.

There have been a couple times that I've started watching the commercials because I was mildly interested in them, before noticing that they're 20 minutes long. That's kind of annoying.

The ad agency that came up with that idea must be patting themselves on the back, because while it doesn't tell you much about the health insurance, it gives you enough to watch the commercial again and that damn blue ball is so mesmerizing.

This. I've enjoyed a couple of them a after originally scoffing at the length.

The worst is when it's just a video from their channel and they just have the hosts talking and give no context to what's going on. Yes, I've actually seen an ad like that.

I haven't noticed really long ads in front of videos I'm trying to watch because I tend to focus on the part of the screen where "Skip this Ad" shows up, but I did watch the 20+ minute Twix commercial because I wanted to see how long they could go with the awkward back and forth.

Eh, I don't mind if it pays those individuals who put out some high quality Let's Plays or Modding videos. I never got a 20 minute video, just the usual thirty seconds of Hornbach, McDonalds, banks, Ski Sports and travelling ads.

20 minutes would get a bit annoying, probably. I wonder if the people who make the videos get paid for how long the viewer watches the ad or just if the viewer watches it till the end.

YouTube should try showing full RonCo ads and ads for Bally's Total Fitness. They should only be played after 2 am, though.

Why make a thread like this without linking? You should know there are lazy people like me who come here only to click links. (´・ω・`)

Wait..... There are advertisements on youtube, before you even watch a video, that are 20 minutes or longer? Can you skip these ads?

The worst ones are the ones in the middle of the video. How can anyone thing interrupting a video mid-sentence for a 30 seconds ad is fine?

had 44 minute documentaries as adds a couple of weeks ago.

twiche the same documentary and the 3rd add was a trailer for the documentary.
thought it was a bug.

got a good one for chrome?
used to have the really great one. had a text file where you could add source you wanted to block, but for some reason it stopped working.

I remember a while when Adblock plus stopped working for Youtube ads on Chrome. I think I read somewhere that sometimes the ad lists get outdated, so I just waited a couple of days and then it worked again.

Once before I wanted to watch a 5 minute gaming video they put a 3 hour world of Warcraft documentary looking for group before it.

The video I WANT to watch is 5 minutes long. I'm not watching a 3 hour video before it
