Seeing Pinetop Perkins and what's left of the Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters band next month. It's like an "original black blues guys who somehow aren't dead" supergroup. Pinetop was Muddy's piano player and he recently turned fucking 96.
Also seeing Conan in Sacramento in May. Awesome.
And there's always the old standbys - anybody good who's playing at McCabe's Guitar Shop (the best folk music venue in the world), X, and The Pogues.
Saw James McMurtry a couple weeks ago and it was actually one of the best concerts I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot. He was amazing, and a couple of his songs almost put me in tears after a couple Fat Tires. Of course, part of it was that he's not big enough on the west coast to play real venues, so I saw him with his band at an LA bar on the outskirts of town, with maybe 80 people. It was awesome because you could see the stage from anywhere and didn't have to lose your seat, so I could actually go get booze and not miss any of the show.
Seriously, anybody who likes Americana rock, Steve Earle or Lucinda Williams et al., he's the real deal. I've seen Lucinda and Steve Earle and he's better than both of them, and a more consistent songwriter. Levelland is a fucking amazing song.
Edit - If I'm in town, I'll probably swing by one of Norm MacDonald's annual stints at the Irvine Improv this August.
