2010 Film Critic Top Ten Lists (and yours!)

Not open for further replies.
I haven't gone to the movie theatre much this year (and I'm not particularly into home video), so not only did I probably not watch 10 movies this year, but the choices after number 4 or 5 would start getting on the crap side of things.

So I'll just list my three favorites: Inception, Toy Story 3 and Black Swan. I'd say Inception is my top for the year. Never been a huge fan of the Toy Story franchise (though I admit they're excellent), and Black Swan was magnificent but it made me suffer too much. :c

So I joined Netflix because they actually had Werckmeister Harmonies to rent. What on Netflix instant that came out in 2010 should I watch other than Exit Through the Gift Shop and I'm Still Here?

A Prophet.

Too early for a personal one. Still haven't seen a lot of stuff I want to see.

Quoting from the first page but yeah, this. I missed a fair few that I wanted to see this year. Let Me In, The Town, Dogtooth, Black Swan etc.

Stuff like The Fighter, The King's Speech and True Grit will likely feature on my 2011 list because of UK release dates.

A preliminary list - not even ten and not in order - would look something like this:

  • The Social Network
  • Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
  • Toy Story 3
  • Up In The Air
  • Monsters
  • Inception

Didn't care for Kick-Ass or Tron. I've seen other films but they were apparently so impactful that I've nigh on forgotten about them.

I Am Love and Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.

Lots of people seem to be making Cassavetes comparisons to Blue Valentine, and those might be apt. Haven't seen the movie yet.

I'd say the same comparisons could be made with Everyone Else (Alle Anderen), which has landed on quite a few lists this year. I really liked it.

Stuff from 2010 that's on Netflix IW that I have in my queue:

I'm Still Here
Bluebeard
Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl
Red Riding Trilogy
Cropsey
I Am Love
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work
Sweetgrass
Holy Rollers

hmm my top ten would be a poor sample so many movies i havent seen...i cant believe some lists have unstoppable on there though...movie wasnt that great...

no particular order

Inception
The Town
Scott Pilgrim vs The World *will the fascination with this ever end??...nope*
How To Train Your Dragon * total surprise *
Easy A
Remember Me * i like melancholy stuff sue me*
True Grit
Iron Man 2 * two words, Justin Hammer , comedy gold*
Youth In Revolt
Shes Out Of My League

I didnt get to see Black Swan, or Social Network and many others so i can only go by what i saw. Maybe this year i will consume way more cinema and have a more robust list :P .

Honorable Mentions

Kick Ass
Warlords
Defendor
A-Team
The Crazies
Book Of Eli

Yeah, I really, really liked Rabbit Hole, but I guess you're going to have some people that argue that it's typical Oscar bait, pandering to that demographic. I don't know. I wish I could type like the film bros on this site.

Yea, I just don't see John Cameron Mitchell pandering to anyone. Such a departure from Hedwig/Shortbus. Really looking forward to it

These lists by the critics really drives home the fact that I hardly watched any movies this year. The only movie I've seen on all of those lists is Harry Potter. Crazy.

Can't think of anything I seen this year as being truly great either. Tron looked and sounded great but the simple and obvious story made it mostly mediocre.

I'm nowhere near ready to compile my Top 10, but White Material will certainly be near the top. I'm surprised to see it absent from so many of these lists. The genius of Claire Denis often goes overlooked, it seems.

I never saw it, in fact this is my first time even hearing of it...

I was a little wary of it after watching the trailer and seeing Armond White give it a "meh" review and he usually likes Claire Denis. I will get around to it before February though.

Quite a disappointing film. Claire Denis is one of my favorite directors, but this overly obvious and didactic film about Africa is probably one of her weakest. Has none of the mysteries of her best works, especially the masterpiece L'intrus.

i want that AMER poster so bad. hope it hits big and someone does a reprint, have had no luck tracking one down

Armond White :lol

Yeah he's a good reviewer if you're not a rotten tomatard.

His negative against-the-tide reviews were so predictable that, for a short time, he became a cliche of himself. I'm not saying I disagree with him 100% of the time but he comes off as a bit of a douchebag (though I guess that's a pre-requisite for a movie critic)

Don't get me wrong, he's definitely trolling people. But even in his negative reviews he brings up good points. And also the man thought Scott Pilgrim was the best movie of the year...that's fine by me.

Armond's REVANCHE essay sold me on him as a critic. Read all his reviews now. I agree with a lot he says even on films we disagree overall on, sometimes its just hard to find in his words. Other times he's just an asshole, which I like too. His SEX AND THE CITY 2 review was classic

My favourite film of the year was Inception.

The rest, in no particular order:
Toy Story 3
Tangled
Harry Potter
Tron Legacy
Black Swan
True Grit
The Kings Speech
Never Let Me Go
The Social Network

Yes, my list is tainted by a heavy dosage of my nerdy tastes. Regardless, I feel like a lot of wide appeal films get overlooked during awards season for the wrong reasons.

I haven't seen enough movies from 2010 to make a meaningful top 10. Wouldn't want to list films that i don't want to watch again at some point. So here is only a small top 5:

1. Enter the Void
2. Armadillo
3. Dogtooth
4. Inception
5. Black Death

That's a fair enough assessment. I certainly wouldn't rank it among her best work, but it's among the best films I've seen this year.

hm. I saw winters bone last night, did not think much of it. Still have a bunch to see but just rented shutter island and green zone.

I don't understand how some of you guys are having trouble making top ten lists...Even during the worst years for film I can still manage to pick out ten decent flicks with all of the quality international stuff being released in addition to Hollywood.

order is when i remembered them

inception
social network
iron man 2
toy story 3
pirahana 3d
unstoppable
kick ass
predators
expendables
Shutter Island

I simply did'nt go to the movies alot this year.

i saw some movies that came out before 2010 on DVD/BD/others, but my list was about movies that came out on 2010

Oh word. It did kind of feel like cheating putting down movies like I saw last year that weren't released in the U.S. until this year.

I haven't seen The Social Network or Tangled yet, but:

1. Toy Story 3 [9.5/10]
2. Inception [9/10]
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World [9/10]
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I [8/10]
5. Iron Man 2 [7.5/10]
6. Alice in Wonderland [6.5/10]
7. How to Train Your Dragon [6.5/10]

And here's everything else I saw...

Twilight Saga: Eclipse [6/10]
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time [5.5/10]
Easy A [5/10]
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief [4/10]
Clash of the Titans [4/10]
The Last Airbender [2/10]
Get Him to the Greek [1/10]
