E! Online says ABC seems to be getting ready to announce these things:

* "Lost" will end in 2009.

* Following the “game-changing” May 23 season finale, there will be a seven-month hiatus before new episodes return in 2008.

* The series will be moving to an earlier timeslot.

Don’t be surprised if all of this is revealed at ABC’s upfront presentation on May 15.

They've said there's 1 and a half seasons left in the past, IIRC.

I'm happy that it's not going to go on too long. It's already gone downhill and I don't want it to get to complete crap by the end.

Season 3 is alot better than Season 2. I don't think you can call that going downhill.

I'll disagree with that, but whatever.

The last bunch of episodes have been great and it's been getting better with each new one. Earlier in the series was quite disappointing compared to season 2 and especially 1. But it's coming back strong now.

I stopped watching in the middle of season 2, but if they have an actual plan on how to wrap things up, I'll probably catch up over the season and watch Season 4 next year.

that was a long sentence

I honestly am surprised they'll run it a full 2 more years after the recent episode. How can it go another 2 years? Doesn't make sense to me.. another 1, sure, but 2? We'll see.

3 was *horrible* for so long, but it has really come on strong in recent episodes. 24 has picked back up as well after a rough patch.

It's nice to see these guys actually thinking about ending the show. Too many shows just go on and on and on when the writers have clearly run out of ideas. This is especially true of shows with a full-series continuity. Imagine a book that went on forever, that would make no sense. The guys on LOST have a sense of the full arc, and know how long it will take to tell the story. They're not writing into oblivion just so they can stay on the air another season.

Season 3 > Season 2
There maybe not be as many viewers as in season 2, but who gives a shit

Everything before the Xmas break felt like a prelude to the "real" season 3. Since it got back it has been ****-all awesome. Probably my favorite season. I can't wait for the finale, but I'm dreading the 7 month wait for more!

This makes me want to get back into the show. I ditched it halfway though this season.

Hopefully they know how it's going to end already. It seems they were just laying down track for a train that was moving too fast and they didn't know where to go with it.

We're all slaves. Something else will come along.. the networks will milk it and the cycle continues.
I like the show, but they need to hire a better editor.

how will the answer so many questions in 2 seasons?

I think 2 seasons is just enough time. If they were to try to end it at 4, that would have been pushing it and they would've been revealing everything absurdly fast for the sake of finishing it up quickly. If they keep at the pace they have been for the past several episodes, I think 2 is just enough.

This is the best thing TV has going for it, but I'm happy Lindelof is getting his way.
As sad as I am to see it go, the show will be able to go out on a really high quality standpoint of it ends at that mark.

Him and Cuse said they always planned on doing ~100 episodes and then end in a movie.
That would put it just shy of 5 full seasons (though, we can expect some filler to reach 5 full ones) and then a big budget movie to send the show off.

... we'll see if the movie ever happens.

I concur, doctor.

That being said, season 2 = awesome

I ditched halfway too, but unlike you I'm not going back. They didn't answer any questions. **** em. They wasted 2 and a half seasons adding more and answering less.

5 seasons was always in the cards? Pfft. Bullshit. I recall plenty of articles being written during Season 2's 2nd half ratings plummet about how they envisioned 7 or 8 seasons and were bitching at the writers to stretch it out as much as possible.

ABC finally saw the writing on the wall. They're just hoping the recent upswing in ratings can manage to give them a decent Wed night performance for 2 more years before having to come up with another show to take its place.

I assume by "X-Files situation" you guys mean downward spiral, things dragging out? This season of Lost has been ****ING AWESOME. And a few questions have been answered, things are progressing nicely.

Hmmm, I think the second half of season 3 has been awesome, can't say the same for the godawful first half.

If by "godawful first half" you mean six eps out of the whole season, then that's not really that big of a deal.

Since this is apparently striking a nerve, I'll just say that Vaughn has been a much-needed addition to the writing team.

Every episode from January has been pretty much kick arse bar Stranger in a Strange Land and has kicked some real classics of the whole series; Not in Portland, Flashes Before Your Eyes, Enter 77, The Man From Talahassee, One of Us, The Brig.

Not a nerve, just so many people get rilled up over those six eps (which I happened to think were okay, just not as good) as if it makes the entire show shit. :D

The second season was also awesome, but in the middle of it it really lost its drive (BERNARD AND ROSE EPISODE). This season has at least one awesome thing happening in every episode.

You're not missing that much although it has improved during the second half of Season three.

They've answered more questions recently than in previous seasons but the writing is still all over the place along with the characters behaviors.

I don't think it's reached the point of no return at all; the show has been as good as season 1 lately. I'm just glad they won't be risking the chance of it turning into progressive crap by dragging it out.

As much as I love Lost and hate to see it fall into the spiral that was The X-Files, I'm still sad to see that it's going to go in 2009 because I really don't see anything on television that really can grab me and make me watch every single week like Lost has with the exception of Smallville. Heroes is great but I fell out about nine episodes into the season and just couldn't get back into it. I'll buy the DVD and pick back up with the series and hope that I can get back into the show. I know there will be others that will come along, but I've been burned by The Night Stalker, Surface and Threshold. The networks are evil.

They've answered a few good questions in the latter half of this season. I think they can answer plenty of questions in two seasons but I'm sure we'll be left with things hanging.

It will return 2008? What the hell. I wish they would go back to showing a few new episodes then a repeat or two so the seasons are prolonged.

The producers have said are no longer doing a movie.

DarkUFO posted this a little while ago:

Since this story launched earlier today, I have been hearing from multiple sources inside ABC that the story is "more complex" than what was originally reported by my colleague Marc Malkin in E! Online's Planet Gossip.

According to these sources, ABC will be making an announcement declaring an end date for Lost very soon. However, the exact number of remaining episodes and seasons is still muddy—and might not be exactly two seasons.

The good news? You don't have to wait long. I'm told the announcement will be made within the next few days.

I've heard people talk about that they think they'll end it with 108 episodes. A full season 4 and a half-season 5 would be somewhere around 108, wouldn't it?

Hardly a surprise since the producers have said they now consider themselves more than halfway through the story.

Yes, although I wonder if that comment doesn't mean something more along the lines of there being two seasons left and a wrap-up film, which has either been rumored or actually tentatively discussed by the producers, I can't recall.

I hoped next season would be the last one, but if there's enough meat for the series to last 5 seasons, I'm all for it.

I would like that, too.
Hell, I'm up for whatever they decide to do. I'm sticking with it until the end. I've never been this into a television series and I doubt I ever will be.

ABC is apparently having some presentation on the 15th. They'll probably announce the details then, if not before.

The Bernard & Rose episode might have been decent in an entirely different series, but it was just so jarring to watch as part of Lost. I just remember thinking "whaaaaaaaaaat?" through the entire episode.

What was so wrong with that?

It was great to see two interesting side-characters get some screen time. Bernard was the only one trying to get off the island and asking questions during season 2.
