2011 - the year of RPG

No wizardry or rune factory tides of destiny? Sure they're niche but they're great
I was about to mention Rune factory, Ar Tonelico Qoga, YAkuza 4 and Totori, but then I thought most people didn't care. Or maybe some of them aren't exactly rpgs.

OT says Skyrim is polished? Really? Isn't it a bug fest?
It's by far the most stable Bethesda game I've ever played. A moonwalking NPC and a crash a few nights ago is all I've run into.

But I think it varies wildly from person to person. I've already heard some shit. Like apparently some people on PS3 are getting terrible in-game lag because their save file is too big? Or something crazy like that.

On these forums. Crashes, freezes, texture bugs, missing story components, save file bugs, frame rate woes, tearing etc etc.

comparing to what happened in previous Bethesda's games it's very polished and there was no game on such scale that had less bugs.

Which thread are a bunch of these in? Certainly not in the OT. ive been following it pretty closely and there is a distinct lack of bug reports. The thread about PC performance had a bunch of people with problems after screwing with their .ini configs. ive also seen about 4-5 hours of streams and have not see one bug.

There are definitely bugs in Skyrim. I mean, it's a fucking massive game. I would say that it has far fewer serious bugs at release than any game they have released in the past.

Wabi-sabi, man.

Namely in the console performance thread. A few in the OT. That said, I barely had any issues with the 360 version of Fallout, so I'm hopeful for Skyrim if it's supposed to be the least buggy yet.

Haven't played Dungeon Siege 3 or Lord of the Rings War in the North but they might deserve a mention in the honorable mentions. I have played Sequence which is partially an RPG and I liked it, and too could get an honorable mention.

2012 seems to be a glorious year too for RPG games although probably less good than this one, I personally am more anticipating Risen 2 from the games that will come out and to a lesser extend ME3. People need to play more of the Risen franchise, and the first game, it is really good.

TC says it's a good year for rpgs and doesn't play portable systems?

Must not be much of a jrpg fan.

Not sure if this counts, but Devil Survivor Overclocked is still one of the top 3ds games out right now.

4)Deus Ex: Human Revolution - the triumphant return of Deus Ex type of game in modern era (even though it's more Bloodlines than Deus Ex in its gameplay).

Wouldn't count this as an RPG, but it has been a good year for them regardless. Avadon and Skyrim especially.

God, I wish I was experiencing this game for the first time again.
I'm still running around that same field 17 hours in. I don't play many RPGs, especially ones that require a large amount of time investment, but Xenoblade has me hooked.

*Punches self in the face for not finishing The Witcher* I really want to get in to the second game, while the first one is really good.. second one looks even better (and prettier).

I also wanted to get in to Tactics Ogre, the art direction, sound and music is really cool. I'm not a fan of the genre though so that might be a problem, heh.

I won't play dark souls or xenoblade and I agree, this has been an amazing year for rpgs just with skyrim, witcher 2, and deus ex.

Subversus, do titles like Cthulhu Saves the World, The Binding of Isaac, Dungeons of Dredmor, and Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP) count?

EDIT: Oh my god, how could I forget my FAVORITE game of all time released in the purest form - Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (PSP). Daaaayum.

This is something like the 5th or 6th thread today where I've gushed about Type-0.

this.

dungeon siege III should be mentioned in the unhonorable category: such a fucking boring game. really - every ps2 hack & slash game is better.

still got torchlight II to go...or maybe not. Thems M.I.A.
They're being coy on Twitter about it. I asked if their official date was still 2011 because the year is almost up and they said something like "We're working hard!"

:/

Turn based tactics games of the year:
Valkyria Chronicles 3
Super Robot Wars Z 2 Hakai-hen
Devil Survivor 2
Panzer Corps

Honorable mention:
Legends of War: Patton's Campaign
Gloria Union

Two more games this year that are probably good but not released yet..
Daisenryaku Perfect: Senjou no Hasha
SD Gundam G Generation 3D

Tactics Ogre is a bad game. Not sure why people fawn over it so much.

Also, unlike people here listing ports or translations of games originally released earlier than 2011, all of these ARE 2011 releases.

Top picks this year:

1. Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. Dark Souls
4. Tactics Ogre
5. Radiant Historia

I find it funny that three of the games on this list are not technically from 2011. Trails is from 2004, correct? Tactics Ogre on PSP is a remake so it KINDA doesn't count and Xenoblade came out in Japan last year, right?

There were lots of great RPGs this year and I know I'm leaving out others, but I don't think it's been THAT good. We still don't have PSone/PS2-like libraries available, unless you are solely looking at DS. At the same time, there are a TON of remakes/ports on DS and PSP. I don't think the new, original RPGs from this generation even come close to the kinds of stuff we had back on PSone/PS2. I don't care about western RPGs, like, whatsoever either so maybe if I dug shit like Elder Scrolls and Mass Effect I would have different feelings.
