How does GAF feel about this whole 2012 thing.

Personally im 100% against it, to me the idea is idiotic. However quiet alot of people seem to be treating this like its a real thing, my uncle who i respect a great deal and have always viewed as an intelligent and reasonable man recently had a conversation with me in which he pretty much said that he believes this whole 2012 mayan stuff.

Curious i read around, the most concrete thing i can find is that the mayan calendars "long count" ended in 2012 and they held this as some kind of day of evolution in a spiritual sense.

Mayans of today have came out openly and said they have no idea where the idea came from and a end of days dosnt exist in the mayan culture.

I mean every week people predict the end of the world and it never comes true, i could predict it now and if i keep telling enough people by 2045 im sure i could get a small cult going of people who think its going to end then.

Recently on facebook iv seen a fair amount of people saying seriously saying things like "2012 a few months away so scared" and it got me think how many people seriously believe 2012 is the end of days.

The Mayans? You mean the guys who used to stab each other to death with sharpened rocks? The ones who couldn't forsee their own demise?

These guys made a calendar with an end point and that somehow means the world is going to end?

You have to be the absolute bottom rung of humanity, the very pinnacle of stupid to believe this.

you have GOT to see Apocalypse Island on History Channel. I guarantee you - on my LIFE - you have never seen a dumber, more idiotic... more representative bottom rung of humanity in your life... then you will with the person who believes that what is quite clearly a rock is a Mayan Jaguar Statue signifying the end times. And they spend TWO HOURS combing the legitimacy of this assertion... wherein not a single shred of scientific or archeological evidence is submitted, not a single viable theory or idea put forward... and yet it's TWO HOURS.

A must see to understand the true demise of History Channel

Going to lol harder than the Y2K shit when it doesn't happen. The most popular explanation I hear for the end of the world is the "end" of the Mayan long count calendar. Seeing as how it charts a cyclical cycle that is every 5000 something years, why the fuck now? Humans have been on this earth over tens of thousands (>100,000 I believe) years, so the cycle has obviously repeated itself several times during our species' existence...

I will never forgive the Mayans for being responsible for that shitty-ass John Cusack movie.

It's all a load of nonsense. Watch the Penn & Teller Bullshit! "End of the World" episode.

I'm kinda nostalgic for Nostradamus. He was the original "guy who announced the end of the world". In the 90s no one was discussing silly Mayan stuff, it was all about Nostradamus.

Ancient astrological concepts of new birth/era cycles confused/mixed in with not-as-ancient apocalyptic mythos of western cultures. Nothing weird will happen.

Did the Mayans make any other predictions that came true? Not that they were even predicting the end of the world anyway. I'm just wondering how this random thing has gained such notoriety over the years.

A lot of ancient cultures attach some sort of spiritual significance to the end of 2012 as some sort of transition to a new age, but none of them say it's going to be the end of the world. I wonder where that idea came from.

I'm gonna attend an End of the World party, have sex and wear a T-shirt that says End of the World Survivor the next day.

I missed it if we did sorry, Anyway i just want to clarify that i in no way think its even possible im more curious as to how this has gained so much attention and influenced so many people and also GAF's views on it

It's something that got caught up in the alternative/New Age/hippie subculture for whatever reason.

In the other thread I made a snide comment about how hippies will obviously ignore, say, a Christian preacher predicting the end of the world (American Christianity = too mainstream of a spirituality for them).... but in their mind, the Mayans can play the role of "an ancient indiginous people in tune with the planet", so they find it an appealing belief (even though the Mayans were nothing like that... just another heriarchical top-down, labor-based society).

There's some major astrological confluence at the end of 2012, or something like that, I think, and a lot of ancient cultures believed in astrology. I'd guess that's where it came from.

But yes, it's really stupid, and even the Mayans themselves, who did believe in astrology., with their cyclical understanding of history, certainly didn't think that 2012 would be the end of the world. That part comes from the Christian apocalyptic trend that has existed in the religion since early days, I'd guess...

It's obviously nonsense. The world ended on January 1, 2000 just like the crackpots said it would.

I'm totally against the world ending, too.

Isn't the theory that Y2K was avoided by the fact that so many people were aware of it, and therefore did something about it? Maybe if we all believe in the end of the world, then it won't happen!

Unlike Y2K, this is absolute insanity.

:lol

What party platform will champion the "against the world ending" cause?

After the disappointment of the world not ending with the 2k problem, I'm more hyped for 2012 than ever. Bring it! I'll go down in flames playing Dark Souls! harharharhar

Who in their right mind can believe such an idiotic thing?!
