2014.5, A Half Year In Music

Status
Not open for further replies.
Premature? Maybe. Pointless? Probably. Fun? Definitely. 2014 is about halfway done and I'd like to see what releases other people have loved so far. Servbot's 2013 Album of the Year thread introduced me to FKA twigs, a fucking phenomenal talent and collaborator with Arca (another fucking phenomenal talent) whose album drops in September (pre-order here). The New Artists In 2014 thread introduced me to Young Fathers, a dope rap group who are pretty amazing live. I'm hoping for gold here people. Don't hold back.

Here are my ten favorite albums from this half year, described with obnoxious hashtags. Post yours! And please, don't be the dude that posts an album cover without saying what it is. Nobody likes that dude.

Soundcloud or Youtube links when available. Album images click through to Spotify.

Can't say that I can think of 10 albums at the moment, and I haven't been listening to enough new stuff to latch on to it.

But controversial opinion time! I haven't been able to stop listening to this:

Cool idea for a thread and dope OP, Pickles. My contribution:

100s - IVRY
Upbeat, funky west coast rap
Different Type of Love

Mick Jenkins - Trees and Truths
Chicago rapper who uses vivid religious imagery over boom-bap production to create an antiquated, but refreshing soundscape
Lack

eyehategodselftitled2014cd_638.jpg
Eyehategod - Eyehategod
The gawds are back with more bloated, downtuned riffage
Medicine Noose

I assume everything else I really like will be covered, so I'll just post this one.

Watery Love - Decorative Feeding
Noisy, angry, punk music. The lyrics are full of gallows humor. RIYL: Pissed Jeans, Big Black, Hammerhead.

Click the album cover to listen in Spotify.

I hadn't realized how few albums I've bought this year until now. Only six that I can think of. Anyways my favorite so far is Crosses.

Crosses_-_Crosses_album_cover.jpg

Crosses - The Epilogue

On a side note, how do you all find new music? I haven't listened to the radio in ages. I usually just check the best selling albums on Itunes on Tuesdays. Definitely not the best way, but I just don't have time to scour the internet for new bands anymore.

I listen to the Bandcamp Weekly (should be at the top of the homepage here http://bandcamp.com/) every week and have found so much great music. Also just browsing the top sellers, staff picks and stumbling upon things in other peoples collections has been a great resource.

Love this. Getting this for sure.

Thanks for making this thread, I haven't really ventured into this years new music yet. Been going backwards in time with music in the past year. Exploring more through this thread later this weekend.

I'm always looking for new music, there's a bunch on here already I haven't heard before that I like. Usually I stick to the same radio stations and such so I miss these things even though my taste in music covers so many genres. Keep em coming gaf!

I haven't listened to a lot of new stuff this year but my favorites so far have been from Crosses, Phantogram and Lykke Li

These are all really, really, really good. I haven't gotten a chance to listen to the Shaken Up EP, been moving all week, but seeing The Knife live this year is a highlight reel moment of my life. Truly incredible.

BADBADNOTGOOD would probably be number 11 for me right now, I actually cut III from the post as I was writing it. Had #cliffhuxtablemeetstheohuxtable all ready to go, too.

I waver on the new Lykke Li. I like it, but it doesn't reach the heights Wounded Rhymes did. I need more time to settle in with it. I feel like it'll click with me once I can fully divorce it from Wounded Rhymes, maybe in a year or two. As it is I go back and forth with my thoughts on it.

On a side note, how do you all find new music? I haven't listened to the radio in ages. I usually just check the best selling albums on Itunes on Tuesdays. Definitely not the best way, but I just don't have time to scour the internet for new bands anymore.

A lot of it is going to shows for me. I'm at Low End almost every week (painfully not there tonight, when Kaytranada is going to be playing of course I have to keep moving furniture). Album release parties, after parties, gallery events, openers at concerts for established acts...if you're around a lot of music events you'll hear new artists a lot. I always keep an open mind and ear when I meet someone at a venue or a friend of an industry friend or anywhere really, and they say they're in music.

Then blogs, friends, and GAF-Hop. You can always count on yoyo, toku, injurai, Des, Esch, etc to drop dope shit in Plug. Monthly publications and subscription services (Other People, r.fm, etc)). Podcasts.

So far:

Cloud Nothings - Here And Nowhere Else
St. Vincent - St. Vincent
Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo
Mac DeMarco - Salad Days
Dum Dum Girls - Too True
RiFF RAFF - Neon Icon
Eagulls - Eagulls
First Aid Kit - Stay Gold

Haven't really been listening to a lot of new albums this year but The War on Drugs' new one is probably the highlight for me. St. Vincent is also fantastic

First Aid Kit and Lykke Li seem pretty promising as well from a couple of listens

James Tilman's EP is lovely.

curtis harding's "soul power"

When I found he was on Burger I was like this must be a sort of garage rock/punk record in a way too...And then I listened to it reminded me of Death and Love, the bands, and I knew I couldn't live without it. Bought!

Scared of what exactly?

ANYTHING. The press, mostly. Nah but seriously, it's just surprising but really great for him. He's passionate.

edit: xD Just talked to the guy I thought was him...wasn't him at all, just a close buddy of him that made Perturbator's website. Close call.
