Anyone think these temps are a bit too much??

My Dell Inspiron has been putting out a lot of heat when I play newer games. Do those laptop cooling pads actually help at all? Or are they a waste of money?
Sort of unrelated question:
what specs for a 15" laptop to use with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, and Solidworks Composer, within a 1500 price range? Any laptop in particular I should look for?
Thanks

The speed didn't appear to be throttled.Putting out a lot of heat, like through the vents? That's a good thing.
Putting out a lot of heat, like the CPU/GPU are hitting 90+ degrees? That's a bad thing.
Cooling pads can be hit or miss. Sometimes it just helps to have one, if you are going use it on your lap, or a bed.
What system requirements are provided for those programs? Providing those would be a good start, because I have no idea, and I'm not looking them up for you.
I have a general thought, that an i5-7300HQ and Nivida MX150 would be my minimum, as I doubt a dual core and integrated Intel graphics with do you any favors, if you do any type of rendering.
I'd probably just buy a Dell Inspiron, then add an extra stick of RAM if necessary.
Did the temps stabilize because the fans ramped up, or because the CPU downclocked?
Were you tracking the Ghz?
I'll run a few games and monitor the temps. Thanks for the suggestion.Recent Alienware laptops have a pretty low curve for the fans. Meaning, they don't do much until the temperature have already climbed by quite a bit. AID64 is not a real usage scenario, and it pushes desktop CPUs 20c hotter during non synthetic loads. Play games or render video or 3D models then measure the temperatures.
Anyone have experience with Eluktronics laptops? I found one with all the features I'm looking for, at a reasonable price but my lack of familiarity with the brand is putting me off.
Their customer service was very excellent, which I should further emphasize. The two guys I spoke with even went as far as to run a benchmark with me to compare temperatures. It very well could have been a unique issue with that particular clevo I recieved.https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS7NSZ8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=APTJB2SEQO65W&psc=1
Unfortunately, I had to return this laptop due to it being defective. I was getting idle temps of 50 and 100 full load with undervolting. Eluktronic's customer service was very good though and refunded me quickly.

So is Nvidia not going to do a GTX1040 with the 10 series? I really wish there were a tier of premium laptop like an XPS that was a bit more affordable but that still had something better than integrated graphics. Or for there to be a part that was low power enough to go in a 13".

The vents put out a lot of heat, but sometimes the keyboard gets hot, so I guess the CPU/GPU are putting out some heat too. I may just run temperature monitor app or something and see how hot it actually gets.
Is there going to be a huge difference performance wise between these two monitors if I'm using a Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ and NVIDIA Geforce®GTX 1070 [8GB]?
15.6" FHD 16:9 IPS Matte Display w/ G-SYNC Technology (1920x1080)
15.6" FHD 120Hz 5ms 16:9 Matte Display w/ G-SYNC Technology (1920x1080)
I've never used anything higher that a 60Hz monitor.
Definitely let me know where the temperatures are getting.
Just picked up an HP Omen 17
Intel® Core i7-7700HQ (2.8 GHz, up to 3.8 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
12 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB, 1 x 8 GB)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated)
1 TB 7200 rpm SATA
256 GB SSD
Bang & Olufsen; HP Audio Boost; Dual speakers
DVD Writer
Paid 750.00 for it
Plan to buy a laptop from amazon, looking for one that can play most games comfortably, I really just plan to play coldsteel/sky series and a few other. Looking to spend no more than around 500-600 if possible.
Do they have a thread on here for general laptops not for gaming? Not sure if this is the right place. I'm looking for a budget one for around $300 for work. I'd stretch the budget a little bit if it got me what I wanted. I know it's not much for a laptop but I want to get the most I can out of the budget.
Must haves:
SSD - No moving parts. Will be traveling with me a lot. I also want the performance increase for the OS because every since I got one in my desktop I never want another HDD. At my budget range I can't find any laptops with these. They always use EMMC storage which honestly sucks compared to SSDs and I find them overrated on supposedly being faster than HDDs. This is probably asking too much for a $300 one but I don't even care if it's a weak 32GB SSD because I have all online storage anyway. I mostly just want it for OS improvements and a few programs running fast.
Ethernet - Might be an odd requirement here but a lot of laptops don't have them anymore. I need it for the moments I want to wire due to me constantly downloading/uploading huge files
Webcam - Just needs to be functional. Nothing special mostly for using conference stuff through something like Skype.
OS - Has to be a Windows 10 laptop due to compatibility. Can't use something like Chromebooks.
I think that's the only major requirements I have. Just needs to be relatively as fast as it can be for that price doing mostly general internet browsing, conference calls, Office 365 stuff, download/uploading files. About it. Can anyone help me? Anything else added is icing.
Hey K.Jack,
I am ordering a custom laptop from PC Specialist and I have a question regarding SSDs:
Is the following brand a good SSD in terms of quality and reliability?
960GB HyperX SAVAGE 2.5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 560MB/sR | 530MB/sW)
Also looking to spend money on a new 15" laptop; preferably under $1800.
I've my eye on a Sager NP8157 and a MSI GE63VR Raider 75. I suppose the AW15R3 is under consideration too, but it's pretty pricey to get the GTX1070 in there with the 120 Hz screen, and I'm really apprehensive about the form factor. I'd appreciate any input from you guys!
You should probably wait for the Acer Aspire 5 to hit Amazon.
Ethernet and SSD aren't going to happen at $300. This is the cheapest laptop I can find, with an SSD.
It's good for a 2.5" SSD, but why go with that, when the 1TB Samsung PM961 NVMe drive is basically the same cost (under M.2 drives), as is world's faster?
60Hz G-Sync vs 120Hz no G-Sync. That's tough.
But, you can have the Sager with a 512GB NVMe drive, for the same cost at which the MSI only has a 128GB NVMe SSD. That's a huge difference.

I kind of figured that myself. Been looking all day and can't find one either. I guess I'll just have to grab EMMC storage or just go with traditional HDD. Any recommendations at around $300?
Hey folks,
I know it's not strictly for gaming, but my partner is looking for a strong new laptop for work. It needs to be able to handle a heavy 'compute load' (in his words), as he works with massive amounts of data in Dynamics CRM and Excel, among other applications, and his current laptop occasionally chokes.
Can you guys weigh in on these two as potential options? Thanks!

Is 4K important?
He's not a creator or designer, but he kind of enjoys having it be a strong machine for SOME personal use as well. His current Dell is actually a beautiful machine, with a glorious 4K touch screen that has a great viewing angle. I think it's an IPS LCD/LED. So it'd be ideal to ensure the next laptop has something similar so it isn't a step down.
Intel just announced some pretty big improvements for their U series 15W mobile chips:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11738...tarting-with-kaby-lake-refresh-for-15w-mobile
Maybe he should wait and see what the 7700HQ replacement will look like. Especially if he might use the extra power. Unless Intel isn't going to have a replacement for the 7700HQ. Though I think an H series mobile replacement might be occurring if you look at the "Coming Soon" slide at the end of the article.
There's always something better around the corner. If you need a new laptop now, then go ahead and purchase the one you're looking at.So with all this talk of Coffee Lake, is getting a laptop now sensible? Whilst GPUs can be upgraded via an eGPU I'll be stuck with an i7 7700HQ if I go with the laptops I'm looking at right now.

Most likely around that time (holidays/spring 2018).I guess so. I just don't want to buy one in September for laptop Coffee Lake CPUs to appear in December/January. When is the new gen rumoured to be coming out anyway?

Hey peeps, I could do with some help.
I would like to buy a new laptop, but I need full compatibility with Windows 7 as I have a serious aversion to Windows 10. I'd like to buy new, though I'm not against the idea of buying a used 2014+ laptop. I need a 1080p screen, at least 8GB memory and dedicated graphics that can handle advanced casual use and basic Unity 3D development (I'm not fussed with playing modern 3D games beyond The Witcher 3). Having a SSD boot drive with space to install a second HD would be greatly beneficial, as well as having a larger keyboard with a number-pad.
My budget is £600 (with the ability to go higher if buying new), I'm not fussed by size or weight, and the laptop needs to be available in the UK. Hopefully this thread won't be like everyone else I've approached who declined to help me because they don't get my hate for Windows 10. Saying that, feel free to say if I'm unrealistic in my expectations if that's the case, as long I can get something close to what I want somehow.
Here are some UK retailers that I have been looking at...

That thinking is only correct when what's "around the corner" is 6+ months away, doesn't have an imminent release, or a release window at all. Intel's Cannon Lake is a better example of something for which you shouldn't wait.
When it's a Coffee Lake scenario, where the wait is a matter of a handful of months, and what's coming offers a significant advantage to what's out now, anyone who isn't desperately in need should wait.
Only problem is that I'm dead set on an Alienware 13 right now. So if the revised version of that isn't out until later in 2018 when the University year is almost over there's no point in waiting for me.
Okay, so I bolded that for a reason. The "buying new" budget is all that matters. What is it?
Well, if you need a laptop before University starts, you aren't going to be able to wait for Coffee CPUs.
Dell/Alienware is usually one of the last to update, where MSI, ASUS and Clevo are the earliest.
I'd be fine hitting £700 if it's fully featured and available from a store with a solid returns policy, just for precaution if it turns out faulty or gets damaged in the post.
I would have bought a MSI GL62 7QF (£599 from Ebuyer with a 1TB HDD, £599 from Save on Laptops with a 128GB SSD) but it doesn't support Windows 7.
Is it a bad idea to buy a laptop that doesn't have a ssd? There's an open box dell with a 1060 for about 1200 Canadian which seems like a pretty good deal
The Windows 7 requirement makes it nearly impossible to recommend anything, as I have no idea what does and does not support the OS.
Everything comes with W10, and it's safe to expect that none of the manufacturers are still making W7 drivers.
Buying a new laptop for school. And while I already have a pretty beefy gaming desktop, I do want something well specced. Was thinking of getting an XPS 15. Then I saw a Razer Blade 14 for similar pricing. I fell in love with the XPS 4k display, but the extra power of the Razer is kinda tempting. That said, I'm not sure I want to trust the build quality of Razer after all their mice have failed on me within the year, I'm so torn. :|
I have a 2015 Razor Blade with 970m and I only had bad luck with it. First off I got 3 dead pixels roughly 6 months after buying it. The left mouse button only works sporadically, the rubber feet are falling off and the keyboard sometimes registers inputs twice.
The worst however is the fan noise on load. I live on an AFB and the fans sometimes sound like a starting jet (yes that's a little exaggerated but I guess you get what I mean)...
Even though I like the form factor and I guess the sleek look I wouldn't recommend buying one, especially for that hefty price tag.
Your Windows 7 requirement is going to make things pretty difficult. What issues do you have with with Windows 10?I'm aware of this, which is why I am open to buying a used laptop of recent years, and sought out this thread to openly ask for help as I can't compromise on the OS. I'm really wanting to replace my casual use laptop to something a bit more capable with a screen that doesn't ghost around browser tabs with burn-in.

IIRC many of these issues can be averted by getting Windows 10 Pro.
