25Mbps vs 75Mbps?

GAF, I need your help. I'll be getting my own apartment soon and I can't decide on which deal from Comcast to get. Here are the two packages I'm looking at:

25Mbps - $25/month

75Mbps - $40/month

Now, I have no clue if I actually need 75Mbps. I have around 6 or 7 devices, but only 5 will be connected at any one time. Should I get the 25Mbps plan or is that going to be too slow for gaming and HD streaming (Netflix and junk)? Thanks.

25mpbs will be more than enough

don't waste the money if you won't use it
 
If your upload increases with the 75mb choice, then do it. If not, then I would just go with 25mb, if you aren't really gonna use it, don't pay for it.
 
25Mbps is enough for a single person and all activities you mentioned. 75Mbps is obviously always better. I'd go for the faster option if the money is not a big concern for you.

The upstream speed also plays a role. I personally wouldn't go with any connection anymore that does not at least offer 5Mbps upstream. If not more.
 
I wish I could get that price for that sort of speed. Its costing me $100 a month for 100mb. Moving soon though, its going to cost me $80 for potentially 25mb, but in reality I'll be stoked if I can get 8mb.

25 is more than enough for HD streaming for one device and reasonably comfortable for two. Gaming isn't bandwidth intensive in itself, only if you download games.

The more people that use it, the more the connection is split.
25 will be able to handle maybe two at most without feeling slowdowns.
75 will allow for more and you can also download things at the same time without feeling squeezed.

Get the $25 plan and upgrade later if it doesn't meet your needs. Hopefully you can do that.

Also, buy your own moden and router to save on monthly fees.
 
I had 1.5/15/25/50/250.

Honestly, the 50 was more than enough. Most of the websites could not upload faster than that. The 250 was nice for downloading Linux isos and whatnot. I'm on 25 right now and it's enough for anything.

It doesn't matter how little it costs for more speed if you don't actually need it. You wouldn't supersize your meal when you don't need the extra calories (at least, I hope not), and you wouldn't buy the extra thing 50% off when you only needed the first thing (...), because in the end it's just a con to get you to spend more than you ever needed to spend. This is the same thing. What do you need. Buy that, and nothing more.
 
I'd go with the 75. Numerically, it's a better deal for the price (1.875 Mbps/$ vs 1 Mbps/$), but, really, I think you won't know what you'd want the extra speed for until you have it.
 
It depends if you actually get 75 or a promise of up to 75, and how much you can actually get in your area. You should clarify that with your ISP.
 
Personally, I'd go for the 75Mbps. Better bang for your buck.

But as someone who is currently using a 3mbps connection, I would take anything better than this shit.

large downloads you want done fast
25mbps will download your average game in the time it takes to make and eat a nice meal, if you just download the odd game every now and then i don't think it's worth the extra 15 a month, and it'll do any video streaming just fine

if that's not fast enough for you, or you're constantly downloading large amounts of data and don't like to wait then go for the 75mbps\

when you say "too slow for gaming", your ping isn't going to change just because you have more bandwidth, you can play online on DSL just fine
 
Im on 12, live alone, and that's plenty. Goddamn I'm paying twice as much using uverse. Gonna have to look into getting comcast again. Seems like my account was deleted it's been so long so maybe I coupd qualify.
 
For 40$ i get around 7Mbps ;__;
Go get the 75Mbps, download speed is never enough.
You can download a game while watching high res high bitrate video and downloading your OS updates in the background without worrying about anything... man i wish i had the possibility to have such connection...
 
I went from 150mbps to 50mbps and barely noticed. 25mbps is more than enough for 1080p60 streaming. The number of devices connected at once doesn't really matter unless they're all streaming HD video at once. Depending on upload rate, it might not be enough for broadcasting on Twitch.

Multiplayer gaming works fine even on a low bandwidth connection, the amount of data transferred is tiny.
 
I mean more is better, and those prices ain't bad, but if it's just you then toss a coin I guess. More than one person using the net? You're definitely going to want more or if you download/stream shit a lot. If it's just you and you aren't downloading/streaming massive files all the time might as well save some extra cash for cheeseburgers and beer or something.

I'm rocking about 75mbps right now and I don't think I could go back to anything slower. The time it takes to download games on steam and such is an incredible difference compared to what I had before. I can also have someone else on a laptop streaming netflix, while I browse gaf and listen to music on youtube while my download completes in no time. It's great.
 
I have 25 Mb/s at home and 100 Mb/s at work and only see a difference when downloading files. 25 Mb/s is good for one 4k stream or 2 or 3 1080p streams at the same time. I would get the 25 Mb/s and use it and if you have any problems upgrade later.

Always go with the most speed/ram/disk space you can afford at the time. Nothing like twiddling your fingers waiting for something to dl/run/save to a friggin' usb drive to make you think about how shitty slow is.

This is horrible advice.
Especially if it's a situation where someone may be locking into a 2-year contract.

An extra 50Mbps isn't going to help much if one's bank account gets overdrawn by $10 and they get hit with a $50 fee for it.

Yeah I second this. If you get faster upload, personally I would go with that. Using plex and remote desktop having a faster upload makes a tremendous difference...

Really depends on what you plan on using it for though.

25mbps isn't bad though. More than enough for streaming, online gaming, and 99% of what you will be doing online. 75mbps only really helps if you have a lot of people on your network using it and downloading large files.

It's only $15 more but it is also a 60% price increase. Which means for 1 year, which means by around month 7 of the 40mbps plan you could pay for a full year of the 25maps plan.

Yeah, no.

Go with what you would realistically expect to need. If you realistically expect to fill up a disk drive and it's cheap to get more space, get more space. If you realistically expect to routinely max out your download speeds such that its an actual impediment, get faster speeds. RAM is the one nebulous area, because it seems every OS update somehow consumes more of it. But even then, there are certain people where 16GB of RAM is decidedly overkill when 8 will do because they're only ever using 2.

Routinely paying more than you need to (this is extra that you're paying every month!) is simply not good personal finance, and certainly not in the case of internet speed when there's essentially no barrier to upgrading when the needs catch up with the costs.
 
Something else to consider is that you might actually get more speed than what is advertised.

I have Comcast and last year my speed was upgraded to 50mbps. I actually got 60mbps.

This year it was upgraded to 75mbps but I actually get 90mbs.
 
Depends if you can afford it, what you use your bandwidth for, and how much you're home.

I'm usually at work or out. I have 25mbps at my condo and haven't really had any problems. Big downloads I just queue up and leave running (e.g. PS4 on sleep mode) while I'm sleeping or at work. If you're a day one kinda guy then maybe it's worth the extra money.
 
25mbps is enough to stream most things at 1080p. 75mbps is really if you want to download faster, it won't "enable" many more activities unless you want to do all of them simultaneously. Keep in mind that depending on your location, XBL and PSN may not even serve you faster than 25mbps.

Treat 75mbps as a luxury. It will cut your download times to a third (if the servers support it), but it's by no means necessary. You will already download at 3 megabytes/second. Go for it if you have the extra $180/year in disposable income.
 
Honestly, even if you're living large I'd probably just keep 25Mbps, unless you live in a house with like 5 people.
