2K Games Announces "Mafia 2"

maybe Rockstar should port Mafia 1 for Wii. i mean they could use the engine without any tuning.

With Godfather controls? I'm there!

I dread playing running/shooting 3rd person games with dual-analog anymore. I don't know how I / we ever put up with it...

Shooting, driving, characters, story, world. Seriously i'll never forget the 1st time i played the Gas station shootout, it was off the hook. The guns just felt amazing, like when you fire a bullet, it really counted. And shooting against cars was the shit in chases, shooting the tires, the decals on the surface of the car, awesome.

I don't think any other game ever captured that feel of firing a handgun.
Driving was much more enjoyable in GTAIII and the city itself was vastly superior to Mafia's collection of boxes.

Mafia certainly had superior atmosphere, shooting, characters, story, presentation, and music...

As an open world game, GTAIII was more enjoyable to play around with. As a linear story based game, however, Mafia was much more engrossing. Some of those missions still stand out today (I remember being blown away by the atmosphere around that farm house during the thunder storm). So many great moments.

Does this remind anyone else of the Bioshock treatment?

2K publishes a sequel to a highly-praised but not extremely well known in console land PC game that has great art and catches everyone by surprise?
Bioshock shouldn't have caught anyone by surprise.

Holy fuck, awesome! Just hope they fix the worthless on-screen map.

Considering Mafia had console ports, no, it's not surprising. Doubly expected in the age of multiplatform releases.

More people get to play a good game. (+Fanboy wars over more shadows and greener grass textures)

It's just another fucking FPS!:lol
I thought this comment was a joke, but judging by your insane Wii ramblings, I'm not so sure. Let me ask you then, you aren't serious...right?

These screens blow away any next-gen sandbox game we've seen so far... but I am on the sidelines as I fear these are bullshots. It would be incredible if that image above moves at a steady 30fps with that much AA.

Mafia had console ports?

I dunno, the only time I ever heard of it outside of PC threads on GAF was one of my friends who loved it on PC back in the day. As a 95% console-gamer, it was totally out of my radar just like System Shock 2 was when it came out.

Eh, GTAIV won't run at 30fps either though ;P

I doubt it they even have LOD on the image. Why would they do that with bullshots?

My insane Wii ramblings? Yeah, thinking that waggle and pointer controls are better than dual analog especially for sandbox games is by far, the most insane thing anyone has ever said on here.

And it was merely a reference to the developer of Bioshock saying that people turned him down because they felt it was just another FPS. I've already said my piece about how I didn't think it was truly revolutionary to FPS gameplay as much as it revolutionized weapon combos in the Bioshock PC demo thread. You know, before people started jerking off to .ini files and beta drivers.

I'm not referring specifically to your Wii comments in this thread so much as your posting history, actually. Let's not get started on Wii (I, of course, totally disagree with you). This isn't the place for it.

Mafia deserves better.

People are so funny. Let's not get started on the Wii (I, of course, totally disagree with you) (translation: Don't say anything about the Wii that might hijack this thread, but sit there and listen to me say my piece)

And my posting history will always be pro-Wii, I love the damn little white box. Still doesn't mean I can't be objective about other games on other systems. I'm not neogaf dude. But for sandbox games on consoles, I will have a lot of trouble playing without waggle and pointers. I feel the same way about FPS on consoles. For aiming, mouse >>> Wii pointer >>>>>>>> analog stick. But again, I was contemplating Mafia controls on the XBOX 360, the most likely next gen console I'll get vs controls on the Wii, not on the PC. The PC version was brought up and that made me consider Waggle >>> button pressing, but mouse >>> wii pointer.

I agree, based on the screens alone, Mafia deserves so much better than tired dual analog controls. That's why I've decided that I will get the PC version. Still wish I could virtually beat someone over the head with a bat by acting it out rather than pressing a button.

World War 2?

the map was the best I've ever had in a sandbox game. just hold down tab and a great detailed perfectly scaled map showing your position and direction is overlayed ingame. much better than all those games where you have to pause, go to the menu, and load the full map.

Sandbox games benefit hugely from the extra horsepower in next-gen tech. I don't see how Wii controls could outweigh high-quality graphics and a smooth gameplay experience in this context.

Good argument. I have declared you winner against your straw man.

Of course, for those of actually talking about controls, my point wasn't that this game would be better served on the Wii, I'm absolutely shocked by how great that city looks, something the Wii could never pull off. My point was that I wished next gen tech, be it PC, 360, or PS3, included waggle controls.

I must give you credit, you've presented yourself well here. Forgive my previously negative tone.

Fair enough. I just can't believe how good it looks, even if there is no LOD. Like, I'm floored.

Can some one name a complex game (not Wii Sports etc.) where "waggle" improved the controls.
That's clearly a matter of opinion.

We've already passed over the Wii discussion here, let's move on.

Fair enough.

I will be reinstalling Mafia this evening.

Will it run on Vista ?

Does the latest patch tone down the realism?

World War 2?.
hmm. perhaps that explains how it looks like Angelo is still in this sequel. Though I don't remember how the first one ended (what was the approximate year before the final cut-scene?)
If it was still well before the 40s then I suppose it is possible that the sequel is a continuation of the story from the first, which is fine by me.

Mafia 1 was fucking amazing.

I cannot wait. This better not disappoint.

I hope they make you drive everywhere again, it was a pain at times but really overall it did wonders for the game in terms of immersion and making the city and the characters feel alive

Thank god...it's about time they made a sequel to this game. I have had the original installed on my system since the day I bought it. One of the best games I have ever played. It has its flaws, but in the end, everything is worth it.

I play it all the time..ehhe

Been wondering why they never made a sequel since the game was soooo well accepted.
