2K Sports done making baseball games.

The basketball market is way bigger than the baseball market though.

Wii U is also totally irrelevant when it comes to sports games. There literally were zero sports titles for the Wii U in 2013 and who knows if it will change in 2014. The risk EA would run is that people who were seriously interested in baseball games already went to the PS3 and now they're moving to the PS4.

I think theres a chance for a baseball game on MS platforms if MS decides to pay some money to have it, I think a partnership with EA actually does make sense there but I don't think either company cares to try to fight for a pretty small market (in comparison to other sports titles).

Not going to happen. It would be a haven for copyright infringement. Something 2K would have to continually monitor and potentially face lawsuits over for letting anything through.
 
Yes please put all the MLB guys onto NBA, that way we can maybe have some decent animation and AI on par with at least grade schools basketball skills. I'm so sick of watching my teammates role into defenders, out of bounds and behind the board.

I think the lack of success Backbreaker received scared everyone off from trying to make a non-licensed football game.

EA got the NFL license which killed of NFL 2K. They bought up full exclusivity.

2K decided to fight back by buying up third party exclusivity to the baseball license thinking that killing off EA would be good enough for them to control the market. They were wrong, badly.

NCAA is separate from the NFL license and was dumped due to lawsuits. I'd be shocked to see anyone go near that thing right now.

NCAA is dead. EA cleaned their hands from the entire O'Bannon case and future cases by paying up during a settlement and are never going back down that road, at least until theres some legal clarity.

I can't imagine them losing out on the NFL license even though Madden sales have been sinking like crazy the past few years.

Right there with you. Licensing has become very limited-- and expensive. That kills a lot of publisher interest and limits possibilities. Licensing is also practically required these days. Gone are the times when fake teams and players are acceptable to sports video game buyers; they demand the real teams, the real players, and the real venues. All of that requires money that adds to the price tag after development and not including marketing.

As someone who's been playing baseball video games for more than three decades, I am disappointed that choice has become so limited. MLB The Show or BUST.

Don't expect much from the Vita version. The 4 GB cart limitations to the game have seriously crippled what they've been able to do with the device. The games aren't bad but they definitely could be way better.

Still its better than nothing which is the case for every other sport on the Vita

Sorry. I mean the video game market. Basketball games are much bigger than baseball ones historically.

Not everyone who buys a ticket to a sports game buys the sports related video game. One market might be more receptive to video games then the other.

Exactly. Theyll definitely renew the license but I dont see how theyd want to pay to the money for exclusivity again. March is so close yet so far away.

I need to get on OS and see what the people who played MLB2k exclusively on Xbox feel about this. Wonder if it will push some to get a PS4

They already lost the NCAA license.

And it's up to NFL not EA on the license, right? You would think given the negativity over this the last few Maddens the NFL would want to try to get more money off these games. I pray they don't get it again because Madden hasn't been good in a decade. NFL 2K5 is still better than the previous 10 maddens.

There is no NCAA license any longer available. The NCAA doesn't want anything to do with video games. Once individual conferences and schools started to pull out from being represented in the games (since they're all secured through CLC or individually) the viability for a video game was pretty much gone.

I think NBA in the video game market is bigger than MLB, but as a sport Baseball is huge, and like I said where we are now with consoles, if you think people are hardcore enough to switch systems for a single sports title there's no reason to believe people wouldn't be desperate enough to buy it either.

It all just seems like too good of a situation for EA which is my main reason for thinking any of this. Put out a game they know is a better product than MLB 2K (which wouldn't be hard compared to recent installments lbh) on multiple systems including last gen - which is what a lot of casuals will be upgrading to I'm sure, that's also console exclusive on some by default, WITH a semi-nostalgic brand that's not as tarnished as Live?

The situation just reeks of "EA"
 
Good riddance. Once they came up with the swing stick it was over for them. The Show has been superior for several years now. I hope MVP baseball makes a return though to maintain healthy competition. Otherwise The Show may end up like Madden.

EA has yet to announce they've extended the deal beyond this season. I believe it's very possible we'll have an NFL2K game this year.

I personally didn't like the MVP Series.. I did love the Triple Play series.

another one that I think some slept on was All Star Baseball 2003. That was one of the hardest, most realistic, feature rich baseball games out during its time.

actually it was ahead of it's time with all the things you could do.

No one is forcing MLB to exclusivity, really. It's just that Sony is doing a far better job than the rest in making the game. Its similar to how no one considers NBA Live by EA anymore, and it's all about 2K.
 
Sickens me that they throw out "#1 rated" for that piece of shit $60 F2P bullshit that is NBA2K14. I hope all their sports games go down the shitter and somebody else rises in their place.

After NBA2k14 on PS4, 2k sports can fuck off. I'm going to that place in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind to wipe all the Dreamcast titles from my mind.

Sony needs a full-blown Sports division. They used to make NBA and NHL games too. I would love them to try it again.

Don't care if it's NFL-related or not (though would prefer it of course) but a PS4/XB1 football game from 2K would be AWESOME!

Providing there's NO VC! Or at least, it's like 5 or 10 VC for things. Can't have stuff for exorbitant amounts. That's jsut stupid. Made me sell my NBA 2K14 PS4 copy just cos of that.

There's nothing to gear up for. EA and the NFLPA have each other in their hip pockets. Just read up on how the NFLPA helped EA lock up NFL legend players for significantly less money than what 2K were paying them for APF2k8.

Man, inferior product or not, it's still bad news. The sports genre really needs some competition again. But the way the industry is set up nowadays, it's studio suicide to attempt to compete and fail.

EA lost it last year actually. Which is why they didn't release a Wii U Madden game. When they had the contract, they had to supply each console with a Madden game (non-monopoly clause or something in the contract) each year. When they lost the exclusivity contract, that allowed them to put the Madden games on whatever consoles they want/don't want.
