Actually I just bought a pebble steel on ebay because I saw a nice price for it. Damn my impulsiveness.

Still, at least timeline should be coming to the regular version right? I like the look of the OG steel compared to what pebble time offers anyway.

So, was anyone waiting for the final prices on the Apple Watch before they decided on a Pebble?

I think I may end up going for a Pebble Time Steel with that Red and Gold look.

wanna pretend to be wearing a $17,000 watch now eh? :P

Yup. When I get robbed at gunpoint the joke will be on them.

I put a Pledge in. I wish I had known I could have backed out of a Pledge before the 27th. I would have done it when the Steel first went up just to hold an earlier spot in line.

Seems like pebble pledges went up after the apple event, and that first reply is legendary.

Maybe if Pebble released a $17k watch more people would be talking about it.

That's why Apple is the top dog, peeps.

I have my pledge down on a $179 one and I keep refreshing the page trying to grab a $159 early bird special. I have just missed it twice in two hours.

Edit: And got the Early Bird seconds after posting this. Not sure if I am going to go with anything else now. $159 USD seems like the perfect entry point to test the Smart Watch market.

It really is I am glad I was able to get one of the early bird slots as well. I think the apple watch is probably a good thing since companies developing iOS apps might just port them to android and support the pebble among others. Either way an increase in popularity of smart watches will only help everyone.

Good lord the new pebble is ugly, they really need to work on the design for the next one

Their whole idea is compatibility so they won't change the design until they find a way to keep older apps working on the newer watches they will probably keep the screen size the same. Also the smart bands mean they want the high and low end pebbles to get the same support so the dimensions have to match.

new pebble looks better than apple's thing imo. there are quite a few android watches that are looking pretty hot as well.

Really curious what are they gonna do the next time in 2 years, with android watch and apple watch maturing.

I'm very interested to see what kind of upgrade cycle Pebble and Apple have for their watches, are they going with a new one yearly? Will that be enough to keep up with the variety of designs coming from Android wear manufacturers?

A question for those who own the previous model: How was battery life? Really.

I know Pebble suggests anywhere between 5-7 days but there are some users who say they would only get a day or two before needing to recharge. There are complaints that watchfaces that refresh for every second drain the battery fast and that any watchface that tracks weather also causes battery issues.

Apparently, a lot of notifications can be a problem as well.

If I get one of these it's going to get fairly heavy use. I don't want to feel like I have to limit my usage just to get good battery life.

Some of the suggestions here concerned me.

With smart watches, I imagine myself charging them overnight anyway so it's not a huge deal. Even the Apple Watch battery life doesn't bother me since I can't see myself choosing to not charge it at night. But I also don't want a watch that may die out on me before my day is done or that will get considerable worse within a single year of use.

Owning a Pebble Steel, it really depends on the active apps and the watchface.

A watchface that displays information and updates these will drain your battery faster, badly programmed ones too.

Currently using a rather static watchface with just time, simple animation an the current date, no health/tracking-apps that run constantly, i get about 1 1/2 week before the watch wants to be plugged in.
And i receive a ton of notifications, email, gmail/inbox, whatsapp, hangouts, calendar alerts and so on.

What I want out of my smart watch is:

- All of the notifications I receive on my phone - now on my watch! From what I gather the Pebble does this as soon as it is paired and I can handle which notifications I get from my iPhone.

- A bus schedule application that lets me know when the next bus will arrive. There are TTC apps for Pebble.

- A good fitness app that tracks calories burned. Apparently Misfit is good for this but it may be a battery drain.

- A weather application. I was hoping for one that was also a watchface but apparently that's a battery drain. I guess I will have to pass on that Persona watchface.

And, well, that's really it I guess my notifications for stuff like sports scores or tweets will all come in through my regular iPhone notifications so they will be repeated on my watch.

There isn't that much I require of a smart watch. I guess that's why the prospect of spending more than $400 on one is making me hesitant and why the Pebble looks so attractive.

pebble steel owner (claimed to be 7 days on their site). Have activity app and weather watchface. it's 10% by sunday each week.

really the only battery killers are the apps that are 30fps animated 100% of the time. And most of those have settings (only animate every minute. only animate when motion is happening).

That's good to know.

I plan to keep things simple. I also want a solid GPS app that only activates when I need to use it.

think most of the gps apps are wonky and pointless for pebble and android and apple. If you really need something like that, do remember that you get notifications of directions for google maps when you multitask away from it.

I have never played around with notifications on google maps. I will look into that as an alternative.

Thanks.

IM a pretty heavy user for my watch and it usually lasts me 2 and a half days.

This is a watch face I designed that kind of covers your expectations, its pretty info heavy though

XjEOV0v.jpg

It shows the last 2 notifications you got, a ton of weather info at the top (current temp, feels like temp, high/low)

And even a weather icon and condition.

At the very bottom you see your next appointment from your Google Calendar.

If you want more weather info you can install something like Pebblets:

I have minimal notifications, background fitness tracking via misfit, and basic watchface and I get a week. I was using a watchface with weather info and that brought me down around 5 days. My Pebble is about 2 years old too.

Thanks. I will check that watchface out. Even with two days I'm really fine. Like I said, I am probably going to end up charging it nightly. I don't sleep with my watch on.

Alright. That seems more reasonable.

Having used my pebble for a few days now all I have to say is that if the apple watch doesn't have the same daylight visibility as the pebble does it has failed design-wise.

goddamit!

decisions, decisions

After it's gone you can still refresh the page every so often and one may come back in stock.

I managed to get the $159 Early Bird special a couple of days ago by just refreshing the page for about 20 minutes straight.

There is also the June $179 reward.

I pledge the 179$ may delivery one now, 189 with shipping. I have had a good week on the stock market so this is a reward for myself. I hope they ship in time because I will be away in July.

anyone using the Pebble as a bike computer, sport watch?

how does it fare?

I use mine with the Misfit app for jogging/running. Just so I get an overall number of steps taken each day and see if I reach a certain goal each day. The app can also monitor sleep history. I have the original Pebble, I really like the light weight and it's fine to take a shower with.

So I pledged yesterday. This is the first time using Kickstarter. Will I get an email or something to say what color of watch I want?

I hope their next watch has a touch screen. I'm not interested in controlling the device with three buttons. Everything else about it looks great.

Is anyone just using this as a plain old watch?

hmm you most definitely can, I dont think you even have to pair the watch at all if you dont want to. Out of the box you can set the time and alarms.

But there are better choices out there if all you want is tell the time.

dont know... its a pretty fun playing around with different watches, while making some of your own... but yeah if you are looking just for a pure watch functionality. maybe go buy a first gen one used for $50 or so
