Last weekend I was "stress testing" a second subwoofer I put in the home theater so I picked a few scenes to watch. MI3 bridge scene, Watchmen opening fight, Speed Racer last race and 300 - the first attack/fight.
Its been 5 years since I watched 300...I had forgotten how great that first battles recipe was.
Everything from when Butler says "battle formations" to the narrator saying something about it being a good day or good start is perfect.
The music cues line up nicely with action..specifically when the Persian gets a spear to the chest, when the Spartans are marching over the bodies and when it switches to the speed ramp fight.
The lines are so masculine its ridiculous and kinda cool. "Throw down your weapons. *spear* Come and get them!" "Give them nothing, take from them everything".
The visuals are devisive but I still like them..but I like Snyder movies in general. At the time though, there was nothing like it. Plus there was some cool shots/ideas beyond the single shot fight. Things like the Spartans holding their ground and pushing off the Persians, sending them flying back..twice. The previously mentioned shot of the Spartans walking over the mountain of bodies. And the very end of the speed ramp/single shot fight where Butler sets his shield and the guy bounces right off it.
The audio. Holy fuck..I actually apologized to my tenants. When the Persians charge into the phalanax...that hit was so fucking loud I was surprised I didnt damage a speaker. Then it happens again when they push off the Persians.
Maybe I wont like the movie as much as I did when it came out..I dont know, I stopped watching after this scene..regardless, watching this brought back great memories of seeing this with a bunch of friends and having a great time. Plus...I dont think anyone disliked this movie when it came out. Seems like a victim of popularity backlash.
