Finally decided to tackle the weird convex d-pad on the drum controller. It's a very quick and messy hack job, just did it to kill some time while we had a power outage this afternoon.
Original d-pad and membrane removed:

Trimmed down SNES pad and membrane in place:

I had to do some filing to open up the + hole a little. A fiddly task, and the result was not very sexy. For some reason this photo is a little darker than the others :/

End result: It doesn't have quite the pivot of the original pad, so the action feels a little flat. Much like a SNES pad really. I need to tidy up some burrs where I've snipped and hacked the plastic, and the up movement is missing about one in every ten hits. So I might have to fine tune the membrane position on the PCB.
Had a quick bash at Pacman though, and it was pretty ace.
