360 version of Unreal Tournament may have fewer maps

Speaking at this year’s Edinburgh Interactive Festival, VP of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360 might have to get cut down in order to cope with the limitations of the console's hardware. Answering a question from the crowd about whether disc size would be a problem with an Xbox 360 port, he stated that “We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version...Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom. And what's really cool is if you think forward and think about what we've done in the past with UT. We had UT 2003 and then we had UT 2004, which was everything in UT 2003 plus a whole bunch of great mod stuff that we went out and purchased from mod makers.”

"If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."

If the DVD format is already showing its age, it's bad news for Microsoft. Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray has had its detractors, but if multiplatform titles are going to be bigger and better on the PS3, then Sony’s going to be able to start justifying the cost of its more expensive hardware. This will doubly be the case if it's a big franchise like Unreal Tournament from Epic. It's especially worrying given that these are still fairly early days in this console cycle. If it's a problem over the next year, what's it going to be like four or five years down the line?

Sometimes i think Mark Rein says just the thing to make internet forums explode... on purpose. :lol

Just put the maps from UT2003 and UT2k4 on one disc. And have UT3 on it's on disc. Problem solved... I doubt I would play any of the old maps anyway.

YEs!

Oh wait...cof cof

Uh, yeah that's sad man. Hey can't they like, put an option to download the maps? I'm just thinking out loud ya know hehe, i know man, sounds impossible. I thought it was a good idea for a moment there.

Hey guys, rather than discuss this news and speculate at the possible benefits blu-ray may provide for these games in the future, we should instead all comment about how great this thread is going to be or how many pages it will become!

This console war crap is seriously hindering discussion around here. :\

I should crush this thread up and snort it. I hadn't heard anything bad about the 360 all day and was getting kinda bummed after so much bad ps3 news.

Will the PC version also have fewer maps? or they're making a bluRay PC version as well?
no one plays their pc games off the disc. It could ship on 17 thousand floppy discs and things would be cool.

The 360 version of course could just make the additional maps downloadable for free to make up for it. Or a second disk with the maps that you can load onto the harddrive. No love for the Core owners. Rein sure knows how to tell the fanbase his next game is coming out for what they want to hear.

I think it's gotten to the point where we can't turn it around and should just accept it, sadly enough :(

What? so they ship the game on portable hard drives for the PC version?

PC games don't care if it's a gazillion disc or not, they just install right off the bat how many discs it takes into the hdd and that's that.

Did we just enter the twilight zone?
Microsoft isn't publishing UT3, so wouldn't Epic (and Midway) have a greater say in pricing?

This has been done to death. Microsoft published. Epic wanted free, but publisher won the pricing debate.

edit: it's all gravy, baby

Well if that is the case then that is good news.

make the other maps downloadable dumb shits

A Blu-Ray disc is bigger than a standard Xbox 360 Hard Drive and a dual-layer DVD combined.

So...this thread will be interesting eh? :lol

Isn't there some rule where developers can't charge for content that is already freely available on other platforms? So if the additional maps need to be downloaded through Live, then it would have to be free, as the PS3 version will be shipping with them right on the disc.

EDIT - Beaten by Secks4Food.

*shakes fist*

? The article doesn't say that they are putting 2003 and 2k4 onto any system.

He used 2k4 as an example of what they could do for UT2008. They could add mods and maps to UT3 and fill up the Blu-Ray, much like how 2k4 was 2003 + extras.

But yeah, they could just make it downloadable. Maybe they don't want to deal with Microsoft's certification crap and prices after their problems with Gears.

Which was mandated by Microsoft since they are the publishers. Midway is publishing UT3, and they let Epic do whatever the fuck they want.
