After failing to hit the 2012 mark for its Android-specific performance software, Futuremark's finally delivering on its promise and making 3DMark available today on Google Play. Typically used as a PC benchmarking tool, the free-to-download app now lets users catalog and compare performance across Windows and Android devices -- iOS and WinRT versions are still listed as "coming soon." There are a few caveats to use, though, as the application requires a smartphone or tablet running Android 3.1 or higher, with 300MB of storage space, a minimum of 1GB RAM and the ability to play nice with OpenGL ES 2.0.

[Why would you do that?]

I was a little nervous because my Galaxy S III is running a custom firmware, and in Epic Citadel, I got lower frames than those running stock.

While 3DMark said I did a little worse in graphics (5321 with an average of 5728... it actually counted them as equal), I did better in physics (4304 with an average 3819).



My full stats in normal Ice Storm:

Your device has the same guts as mine but you have a much higher physics score. Maybe I should consider switching to LiquidSmooth...

(though to be fair, I had a lot of background stuff running, and since physics is on the CPU based, it probably was impacted by my background processes.)

Overclocking the phone SoCs has a lot more limitations than OCing PC GPUs and CPUs, unfortunately. Cooling isn't even the limiting factor most of the time when OCing these things.

Both benchmarks are rendered to an offscreen buffer at 720p/1080p and then scale up to the native resolution of the device being tested. This is a very similar approach we've seen by game developers to avoid rendering at native resolution on some of the ultra high resolution tablets. The beauty of 3DMark's approach here is the fact that all results are comparable, regardless of a device's native resolution. The downside is we don't get a good idea of how some of the ultra high resolution tablets would behave with these workloads running at their native (> 1080p) resolutions.

I know, me neither. I still don't regret getting the S III over it (need that SD card slot!) but I know now that I wouldn't have been disappointed at all with it.
