A Human Becoming
More than a Member
About 6 months ago I made my third thread asking for 3DS data. Before looking at the number crunching, please fill out the new form below. Everyone who owns a 3DS is welcome to fill it out even if you haven't contributed to every thread.
I almost didn't follow through this time because the number of participants dropped from the previous thread. As more people own the 3DS I want the number of participants to increase so the data better represents GAF use of the 3DS. It was only in the last couple weeks did I start working on this OP instead of over the course of several months as I have in the past. If you can, please share this with other GAFers you think might fill it out. If the number of participants drops below the the number from the original thread (117), I most likely will stop collecting data after I post the data results for this thread.
I put far less effort into presentation this time. I still think it looks fairly nice, albeit the slides are a bit bland. I re-did some past graphs so each group looks the same. Inputting all the monthly top played titles took far more time than I expected, but I did streamline it fairly well, as I have the entire process. It still takes a ton of work, but I like stats and the challenge.
You should look at mine before filling out the survey to better understand what I'm looking for:

And now onto the number crunching...
These images are important to read to fully understand the data.
Make sure to carefully look at the titles of the graphs below to distinguish the different groups:
The first time I did this I somehow omitted Link's Awakening from the top 5. It graph fixes that oversight.
As I said last time, everything left except for Ocarina of Time, which held onto the top spot until...
...it was dethroned by Kid Icarus in the third group! It wasn't far behind though. While Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 7 both have more listings for second and third most play time, Kid Icarus has far more listed in the top spot. This is a trend you'll see when you read the month-by-month top play time listings.
Breaking these down even further:
Nintendo domination has continued with 3D games being most of their games listed since Group 2. Ubisoft, to no surprise, fell of the chart after the launch window was long past. I predicted last time Square-Enix would rise in rank due to Theatrhythm and Kingdon Hearts 3D. What I didn't expect was Theatrhythm to be the main reason why.
I didn't get around to going back to Group 1 to find stats for Nintendo in the Top 3 Play Time. I'll make sure to do so next time.
There was little change between Group 2 and 3. By April 2012 the big titles had already hit.
Now for Top Played:
It perplexes me how high Notifications has rose. Would anyone like to shine some light on this? I just never see a reason to look at it; I usually hear the important content updates on GAF. No surprise Swapnote replaced Pokedex 3D. I expect Flipnote Studio to replace that after it's released.
Now to highlight the most popular 3DS game on GAF (based on the sample):
This will be more interesting once there are other games to compare. I could have asked if people had beaten the final boss/level, but that information won't be applicable to all games (like Mario Kart 7 since it's main draw isn't the single player content).
Now for the first eShop use update:
It always baffles me how much time I actually spend in the eShop (Streetpass Mii Plaza even more so), but the numbers show why: 5-6 minutes over a hundred times adds up. I thought people would visit the eShop much less frequently then they do. I would say Nintendo has had some success with the shop with 73% checking it out at least once a week; the exposure to new content is important. How this continues is the real interesting part.
I tried to make a calendar showing the most Playtime by month, but none of my attempts came out the way I wanted, so I'm going to do it manually. February is skipped due to so few entries.
