Yep. Got a black 3DS XL. I'm hyped, it's my first handheld since the Gameboy Advance.

Only bummer is the eShop being totally out of wack for two days now. Was hoping to download a bunch of games.

I'm thinking of picking up Rune Factory 4. Never played Rune Factory before, though I've played Harvest Moon for GBA and thought it was decent. Is it worth it at $40?

Regarding Fire Emblem, I'm aware that when characters die then they're gone forever in normal mode. But is there s character limit and then game over?

I keep putting off playing the game due to getting stressed over characters potentially dying!

Assuming it's like every other FE, no. Although obviously if you get down to one person, you're gonna have trouble. :P

I got a new CakeWedge.
Methinks FE AND Zelda will be some of my first downloads. I'm going to risk some of Nintendo's archaic practices.

So far I've been trying out lots of demos. Haven't been to big of a fan of some of the RPG's on there. Really didn't like Castlevania, but shockingly loved FE. Also really liking what they're trying to do with Project x Zone. Could not get used to Snake Eaters controls. Really liking the browser though. Currently typing from it actually.

All in all I hope this thing will still be supported for the next five years. I'm just getting started on this little badass.

As soon as the eShop goes up in NA, I'm gonna redeem one of these here cards and grab Steamworld ASAP. I was originally gonna get EO4 right away (I even have three $20 cards, so it's like one per Atlus game :P), but I'm gonna be buying at 1:00 am, and I want to get something that'll download fast enough that I can play a little before I go to bed (why yes I do stay up late).

Ok, my library is huge and I spent almost 1000 hours playing my 3DS this year. But I somehow still need to buy more titles for it. Ill put my top five wish list up and you guys tell me whether they're worth my time/money.

In no particular order:
Code of Princess
Project X Zone
Luigis Mansion
Crashmo
Starfox 3D

Yea the system is amazing. I think with Nintendo's WiiU struggles this system will be around for a while so we should be in store for some awesomeness.

Are there any weird/unique Japanese games for the 3DS that aren't turn-based RPGs/SRPGs? I don't want to bring system wars in here, especially since I don't own a Vita at all, but I'm a bit jealous of the Vita getting stuff like EDF 2017, Valhalla Knights 3 (as bad as it seems to be), Gravity Rush, the almost guaranteed localizations of Senran Kagura SV and Akiba's Trip 2, just stuff you'd look at and go "yep, that's a weird Japanese game alright". Like, I have Senran Kagura Burst, and I love it, but I wish there were more games like that on the 3DS. Like the Guild stuff, but longer/full-fledged games. Like, I'd buy the hell out of a full retail Liberation Maiden or Bugs vs Tanks. I just feel a little jealous that the Vita is getting all sorts of these kinds of games and the 3DS doesn't seem to be.

So yeah, I dunno, am I missing any games of this sort on the 3DS?

Project X Zone is not; it's monotony fronted by fangasm.

Life would be so much easier if the eShop had background downloading so I could download Crimson Shroud while I play Steamworld. :V Anyway, eShop's up if anyone else needs to get things.

EDIT: Steamworld Dig seems pretty awesome from the 20 minutes or so I played. It's the Terraria/Metroidvania mashup I never knew I wanted! Sleep now while Soul Hackers downloads overnight, will pick up the rest of my shopping list in the morn and leave eShop woes behind me.

First set of 3DS games: Pokemon Y, Fire Emblem, Ace Attorney 5 and Link Between Worlds. Should be set for a while.

I was certain I was going to play Pokemon first because I used to love it back in the Red/Blue/Yellow days, but I can't stop playing Fire Emblem. Shit is dope!

Damn guys, SF4 is amazing on 3ds. More still that it was a launch title and is only $10 here in the US on sale at the moment. Boy howdy, am I rusty!

Kinda sad how they'll never even seriously consider making a Wii U version of SF4 when they can make such a competent version for the 3ds.

Okaaaay. Got all my games bought and downloaded/downloading. I ended up with a little extra eShop cash because I didn't realize you could only add in amounts of 10, 20, 50, or 100, so I'm gonna probably pick up some SMTIV DLC as well. Then I can forget all this eShop stuff ever happened. :x

Code of Princess: Fun brawler marred by some really bad frame rate issues. Unless you're a huge fan of brawlers, I wouldn't call it essential at all.

Project X Zone: A game with some really cool nods towards the games represented, but ultimately an SRPG with an overly-simplistic combat system that wears out its welcome hours before it's over.

Crashmo: A really, really fun puzzle game, but don't expect Pushmo 2. The only thing the two have in common is that they're both block-based. Expect a completely different set of rules for solving the puzzles.

Star Fox: I haven't tried it yet, but apparently it's a very faithful port, so if you liked the original, you should like its remake.

Well if you were paying from the page for the games you bought, you could have just added the needed funds to pay for the game...

Oh. Didn't know that, actually. It worked out anyway though, because the extra $5 was just enough to buy all of SMTIV's story DLC.

Code of Princess decent brawler with framerate issues;similar to guardian heroes but the characters are hit and miss. Senran Kagura burst(eshop) is the best brawler on the 3ds

Project X Zone avoid at all costs. based on the demo its a repetitive srpg with battles that drag on. get it of you want fan service

all I got. Haven't tried the other games

My brother has let me borrow his copy of LM and it is pretty damn good. Visually it comes up short to the GCN original, but achieves a close enough approximation of LM for the Cube while upping environmental diversity to a big degree.

It's LM with a lot more stages and slightly lacking visuals.

Oh... I've already beaten Kid Icarus. Story mode at least. Still got a fuckton to do in the game though. That one was my surprise love with mah new 2DS.

- 3D Kid Icarus: fixed the controls making it actually fun to play

quoting again due to being buried when I asked earlier - can anyone else agree with this? Crappy controls always prevented my enjoyment of OG Kid Icarus, are others in agreement that the 3D Classics version addresses the issue? If so I might pony up-

-- if I can actually get onto the eShop, of course

Man, Devil Survivor Overclocked is really good. I was starting up all my games briefly to get a feel for them, and I ended up playing for around two hours. All the fun of SMT demon mechanics with all the goodness of Fire Emblem-style SRPGs.

PSA: Buy Atlus games. :P

As a left handed gamer, is Kid Icarus really bad? I can't even find it new anywhere either...

Anyways, got a 3DS XL and a Wii U over the past couple of days. I need to learn not how to just buy every game I want all at once and just not create a backlog as usual ;)

Damn guys, SMT4 is so user friendly! Hell, even demons not in your direct battle party level up. That was totally unexpected.

I've finally been dedicating a lot of time to Fire Emblem and it's sooo good. One complaint I have is that it seems like many of the maps are smaller than usual but so far it hasn't affected tactics all that much. It just seems to affect a lot of other stuff that could be there, like in 10 chapters I've only seen a few villages so far and most of that was in a single chapter that was dedicated to warning them of an attack.

..

okay I'm gonna photograph this post and bury it inside some time capsule

If I love both Fire Emblem and SMT games is Devil Survivor: Overclocked the best game ever??

Aside from the eventual SMTxFE, pretty much. It very much plays like a cross between those two franchises, except without permadeath.

EDIT: Figured I'd share first impressions (1-2 hours) of the games I got:

  • Devil Survivor: Awesome. A great mixture of SMT mechanics with SRPG stuff, and the plot is interesting and fairly dark. Demon auctions are an odd replacement for negotiations, but they do their job. Wish the art and music was better.
  • Soul Hackers: Definitely feels like an (updated) port of an old game, so if you can't handle at times dated mechanics at all you should probably stay away. That being said, it's far from unplayably dated, and plays pretty well so far. Atlus did a good job updating it, but it is a 90s dungeon crawler at its heart. No Press Turn System means the battles are a bit simpler, but to compensate complexity is increased with row mechanics and six-person parties. Fantastic atmosphere, cool characters, interesting and very engaging plot.
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Speaking of retro dungeon crawlers... I like this a lot more than when I played the first one years ago. Nice class system that seems balanced, with cool skill trees, a lot of content, a great feel of exploration with the maps and overworld, a hardcore edge, and awesome music.
  • Steamworld Dig: Speaking of exploration... Very cool, very stylish game that combines Terraria-esque digging with Metroidvania progression. There's something very organic and satisfying about digging your own path through the world instead of following normal levels (although there are those too).
  • Crimson Shroud: So awesome. This game does an amazing job of capturing the tabletop roleplaying feel: Miniatures, dice, a dungeon map, DM descriptions. The feel is perfect. The game is also really good! It has a lot of unique mechanics that set it apart from other RPGs (dice pools, skills attached to equipment, etc.). Haven't delved much into the story yet, but it's intriguing and has a kind of ominous edge.

So basically all highly recommended. :D

...so many JRPGs... @_@

The 3D classics version is great. A few things that will increase your enjoyment:

- You basically must get the arrow upgrades in the first couple levels or the game is really hard.

- Press and hold the jump button in the air to glide.

- Don't worry about exploring every square of the dungeons.

- Kill everything you see in order to qualify for upgrades and level ups

- Spend hearts when you have them

Steamworld dig is on sale on eu eshop.
What game gear games are worth getting and can their buttons be remapped to any of the 3ds buttons?

Any thoughts on a game called Attack of the Friday Monsters?

If you liked any of the studio Studio Ghibli films I'd definitely recommend it. If not then I'd still recommend it because it's lovely. It's pretty short and you can easily finish it in a single sitting but it's totally worth it.

I'm near the end of Etrian Odyssey IV. Loved every moment of it!
How does EO Untold: The Millenium Girl compare to it? From what I hear most people rate it much lower.

I'm still waiting for EOU in Aus but I did do a bit of poking before hand. I was told 4 is the better game but Untold is also very good. Untold also uses named characters, I believe. It retells the tale of the 1st EO game and has a heavier focus on story with character voices and such. Both games have decent end game content and there is not really any harm of playing them in any order. I was basically told that if I liked EO4 I will probably enjoy EOU because they are still quite similar.

I'm lefty and currently playing Kid Icarus with the default controls because I found the lefty option weird. Default controls are move with the thumbstick, aim with the stylus and attack with L. I've played about two hours so far and I still find the controls awkward unfortunately.

YMMV but I'm enjoying the game and having fun despite the controls not because of them.

It's great, but the Story mode is not that great, it adds stuff that doesn't make the game any better. I'd recommend to play Classic Mode that would make it the same as 4( you create your own characters)
