Ah, it was causing a loop for me as well. I guess getting rid of the menu hax on emunand should do it right?
changed my theme on emunand but it deleted both menuhax... sigh
it's so weird, I have menuhax set for auto boot, so it launches straight to homebrew loader or the rxtools depending on what I set the boot.3dsx for. But when I'm booting up rxTools, I have to press R (my not boot button) so it goes it can load the emunand, if I don't press anything it freezes on a black screen now (before it got stuck on a red screen looping)
So I'm trying to copy over my retroarch files from before I downgraded. I installed the emulators as .cia now. Is retroarch reading savestates and the like from the same directory as when I was launching the emulators through the Homebrew menu?
i tried that, does not work, still black screen. i don't know if it's cause of rxTools or if my emuNAND is fucked. is there no other way to boot into emunand?

For me it didn't, but you can change that pretty easily by going into the settings and telling it to pull your save states from a different directory, or move your savestates to the directory listed. Keep in mind that they might not work if you grabbed CIA nightlies that are from a different day than the homebrew ones - emulator updates can break save states.
If I bought a new n3DS what firmware will it likely be on?
has this whole process become easier yet?
Everytime I hit up the guides I just get a headache
Thanks. Going to read these guides now too. Try and get my head around them.10.3 or lower, so in other words good to go,assuming Browserhax still works when you get one (which it should).
Not easier, but more secure at least. Follow this guide for downgrading, this for installing CFW. Just turn your brain off and follow each step as directed and you'll be fine. Problems come from people like me who see something like "format SD card" and say "horseshit" then end up with their NANDs linked. If you're confused about how to do a step, feel free to ask.
I have a N3ds XL @ 9.0
Should I wait for RX3 or update to 10.3 now?
I got the rxtools for n3ds here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-more-or-less-catch-all-tutorial.407080/ "Setting up CFW on 9.0-9.2" had to grab the mirror linked one.
"For good measure, also download ReiNAND 2.1. Extract its firmware.bin to rxtools/data. Rename to 0004013820000002.bin"
Above is what worked for me, the other firmware he mentions in that guide didn't do anything and just black screened.
that ReiNAND firmware.bin is for N3DS only, i have an O3DS. i guess i'll try an older version of rxTools
So what's the disadvantage of cfw? can you still access the e-shop/play online? can you still access the games you've already downloaded & installed along with normal retail carts?
This.
Can I still play games online and access the store?
You sure your NANDs are unlinked? Sounds like they might not be. If you change your theme on emuNAND, does it change on sysNAND as well? If so, pop out your SD card, format your sysNAND, pop your SD card back in, re-install Menuhax to it and it should work.

If done properly, yes.
The big "if" factor is if Nintendo pushes a firmware update that blocks access or exploits, we expected it to come last night/today but so far nothing.
Ah that might be it. Should I reformat with emunand9? And only install menuhax on the sysnand right?
Ah, that's putting me off a bit. Wanting to play online, especially Pokemon and Smash.
You can play online. I know I can with my N3DS on 9.5. You just need to follow the proper steps after having the downgrade completed.
Nevertheless, rxTools is implementing 10.3 before March (the release date should be "way sooner" [sic], though). If you don't update to whatever firmware comes out between now and then, you will be able to have the best of both worlds.
Backing up the Nintendo 3DS folder should be enough to keep my saves right?Nah, for this reformatting you're going to want to do it through the 3DS options. It's going to basically factory reset your device. And yep - after you do all this, go into emuNAND and switch themes to break menuhax on that end if you still have issues.

If I was to downgrade and homebrew, would I be able to upgrade later to 10.3 and not lose anything?
Well, yes. I don't know how much you about this CFW stuff, but you'll be dealing with two "systems": a sysNAND (the retail system stored on a chip) and an emuNAND (a virtual clone of the system that is stored in your SD card).
Your sysNAND will remain at 9.2 (which is the last exploitable firmware) whil your emuNAND will be updated to whatever version is current (10.3 for O3DS, 9.5 for N3DS until rxTools 3 is released). So, yeah, you will be able to update and keep everything: right now if you have an O3DS, in the very near future if you have a N3DS![]()
looks like reinand will be supporting 10.3 soon as well (read: tomorrow/a couple hours)

hopefully it'll be out before my n3ds gets here
Fairly certain, but that wasn't an issue for me - might be best to look into that or have someone else chime in.

So this means CFW without downgrading for those up-to-date on their firmware?
Mines due for Friday, if it is does it mean I can bypass downgrading?
No, emunand support isn't the same as being able to install CFW directly on 10.3 . What this means is that when you downgrade an N3DS to 9.2 and build the emuNAND, you can the upgrade it to 10.3 and enjoy not having to spoof access to eshop and NNID.

Not really. So would you say its better for someone to wait for this to come out before doing the whole downgrade thing? If you have an N3ds.
Update through system settings?Ah, how would you upgrade the emuNAND?
Not really.

Not really.
Update through system settings?
That easy? Thought I'd have to do something else.
How would I access eshop? I've read I'll have to spoof firmware or something?
emuNAND is basically like dual booting an OS. You just access like you would normally.

So, I shouldn't run into (m)any problems following this?

As for downgrading, is this the file I want:
EUR : 9.2.0-20E (I'm from the UK)
Thanks!
Thanks, I have 9.2.0-20E(Full)_n3DS downloaded.'m using rxTools, but I'd love to give reiNAND a try. Any major differences between them? Can you coldboot to it, or do you need to use the DS profile exploit?
I really just need CIA support and eShop/online. If it's too much of a hassle to switch between them, I'll wait for rxTools 3.
That's the tutorial I used and it worked flawlessly for me. As a reminder, don't skip any steps. Even if you think they are not needed, they are.
Pay attention to which update pack you are downloading! 9.20-20E(Full).zip is for the OLD 3DS. 9.20-20E(Full)_n3DS.zip is for the NEW 3DS. I cannot stress this enough: don't use one pack on the incorrect console. You will brick it if you do.
Ah, how would you upgrade the emuNAND?
Downgrade to 9.2 - https://youtu.be/BYo20U3wrk4
