3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

I followed a tutorial and managed to install CFW (RxTools, OG 3DS). All the others I couldn't find anything I could follow or read about, so I'm happy that I was finally able to do it.

My N3DSXL is intact and my OG 3DS is CFW, now I can get the best of both worlds, until I buy a small N3DS and put CFW there, putting my OG to sleep forever.

Which guide did you follow? I'm on 9.2/10.7 with everything running perfectly but I'm finally starting to tire of the occasional failed boots and think it's time to update. My concern is that I have everything running perfectly and I'd only consider this is after the updates, I'll get back to exactly the same state I'm in. Themes, folders, saves... all of it. I lost that all with the last update because I followed two separate guides and lost everything in the process. Not doing that again.
https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-1-(Homebrew)

If you already have emuNAND you can start from Part 4. I did.

I did a bit more tinkering with my A9LH setup this afternoon:

- Swapped the NANDs around to have updated emuNAND. I'd been getting occasional lag while running emuNAND which I think might be to do with my micro SD's atrocious random write speed, so hopefully that'll be gone now.
- Got rid of BootCTR9 and just launch AuReiNAND directly, with CTRBootManager9 as the payload it can run when holding L+R at boot. That gives me a list of other A9LH programs I have (Decrypt9, EmuNAND9, Uncart) so I don't have to remember the arbitrary buttons bound to each one.

I think so but it'll depend on which custom firmware you're using (it needs to block A9LH from being overwritten), and the changes made by the update (in the case of 10.7 they're very minor, but a bigger update could break things). Best thing is to check your CFW's thread on GBAtemp to make sure it's ok.
Any good guides on uncart? How do I use that thing? I did see one ugly long guide on Reddit is that still the method?

When I looked recently I didn't find any simpler methods than this guide. With the A9LH versions of Uncart and Decrypt9 it isn't necessary to use Brahma. You do probably need the right slot___key__.bin for Decrypt9 to do its thing.

HELP
downgraded my N3DS to 2.1

CdoHT_kWAAEMBx8.jpg

but i am unable to boot unless i remove the SD card.

Let me know if this is against the rules, but is it easy to patch 3DS games at this point? Can someone link me to a tutorial? I want to play a Pokemon ORAS rom hack but only if it's not a pain in the ass to set up.

and....back to 9.2

That was scary ride to OTP land.
i can't lof to my emunand now maybe because it's bricked and it's on 2.1 ?
i did the unbrick thing, should i restore the emunand ?
You've currently got 2.1 in there and version 2.1 isn't bootable on emuNAND, bricked or not. If you want back into it, you'll have to restore one of the backups you made a few steps back.

After the emunand restore,i should continue with A9HL and i should continue without that emunand?

hmm, i just tried to restore original emunand , decrypt9 say "no usable file found"

edit: decrypt9 is not working so i tried OTPhelper and managed to restore emunand.

If you keep following Plailect's guide, it will eventually have you remove your emuNAND entirely. Restoring it now just lets you continue using it in the short term if for whatever reason you don't want to continue on to arm9lh installation immediately.

So i system transfered from my emunand to a n3ds and want to transfer back. Do i a) create a new emunand partion on a different sd card and restore my previous files or just completely setup emunand again and do the transfer and switch my sd cards?

so, to use A9HL i must delete emunand ?

You don't have to. But once you install A9LH, you don't really need it. The exploit basically assumes full control of the hardware super early in boot. So it can inject things up into sysNAND in the same way you could use sysNAND to inject things up into emuNAND.

i am stuck at "Exploiting arm9..." screen for the 3rd time
"Exploiting arm9" should be nearly instant, if you get stuck restart and try again
what the reason to stuck too much?

edit: finally got it to work after the 8th time.

Finally gave in and installed a9lh yesterday on my n3DS, with zero hiccups. Super pleased with the results. Boot time is fantastic and being on perma-sysnand means I can install GBA games much more easily, so I went and converted a bunch of roms to .cias since there aren't a lot of Japanese VC injects floating around. Pleased.

I see a lot of people playing GBA games using injection on the ambassador games, but isn't it better to use Retroarch? I remember the ambassador games having pretty bad image quality, especially for fast-moving games like Yoshi's Island which were super-blurry in motion.

Can you help me with GBA games? I'm on AuReiNAND and when a launch a gba game, I get a black error screen and have to reset my system.

The injections probably run better on o3DS than Retroarch would. Also, I had Retroarch crash on me once which deleted a save :/

Oh right, I forgot the o3DS couldn't run most retroarch cores properly.

I was just messing around installing .cias this morning and then suddenly my micro sd corrupted. Not sure what caused it, but it's been having issues reading on my PC for a little while and I guess it finally decided to delete everything. I JUST deleted the backup I made from a9lh yesterday, so I have to start again in terms of saves and installed games. Back up your files, people! At least my NAND is intact so it's just a bunch of installing.

You need to patch your AGB_FIRM. There's a guide in the release for the patcher on gbatemp, it's pretty straightforward!

Well, I managed to downgrade to 2.1 on my N3DSXL, dump my OTP, and get back to 9.2. Finally got the nerve to try after my system failed to boot into CFW 3 times in a row, which was a first for me.

Haven't actually set up A9LH yet, but that is next on my agenda. The entire process was way less nerve wracking than I thought it would be. I followed the guide to the letter, triple checking everything before actually committing to it. emuNAND downgraded to 2.1 with 0 errors first try.

-Edit-

Got A9LH set up with CakesFW CFW Sysnand. These boot times, so nice.

so after transfering my account and stuff back to my n3dsxl, i am missing fbi and hbl launchers. so i am trying to inject fbi into health and safety and decrypt9wip wont open to inject. it opened so i can dump the app but now it wont open. can anyone help me?

yes i am running it in sysnand and im running it through bramma ii

also just running it normally through hbl causes it to hang at a black screen

I'm wondering what else there's left to do. Still running A9LH + Cakes (9.2) + EmuNAND (10.7) - the boot times are wonderful and it's a flawless experience, with System Settings and other programs working seamlessly. So, I've installed the .cia files I needed for emulators, FTP server, etc. I dumped my 3DS carts and thankfully backed up my various Pokémon saves. I could patch AGB_FIRM, but I could also just run gpSP . . .

I suppose we just need to wait until there's movement on DS games via VC. That's the final frontier, I guess.

Fuck. So somewhere between transfering my data from my nn3ds back to my nn3dsxl with emunand my save for Persona Q got lost/damaged. Good thing I had a slightly older backup saved to the cart.

Anywho, how can I take the save from my cart and use it on my installed cia version, in particular for Pokemon Y?

Use svdt. Be mindful of timestamps. But I just did this today: I copied (not transferred) the save I backed up from my Pokemon ORAS carts to my ripped Pokemon ORAS .cias.

I recommend JK's save manager, google in JKSV. you can install it as a cia, it's really easy to use.

Is there an easier way to convert the dumped games to CIA or did you follow the Reddit guide with all those steps each time?

Dumping was easy, with "press B to Uncart.bin" and "press Y to Decrypt9" on startup because of the A9LH setup. After that, I used the Simple CIA Converter program. It was pretty straightforward. The longest part was just plugging in my Windows desktop, since I normally use a Mac.

I run the Simple CIA Converter with Crossover on a Mac and it works great

Looks like the A9LH installation has new safety features. There's a new, handy A9LH installer that validates the OTP.bin (to make sure it's yours) before installation and there's a downgrade checker in the updated OTPHelper program. Plailect's guide has also been updated to use these new features (damn that kid's fast).

No reason not to install A9LH now unless you're perfectly content with your setup.

In the A9LH guide on page 5, section 'Installing arm9loaderhax' it says
3. Launch MiniPasta, which will patch your SysNAND and reboot you into the home menu
4. Get into the Homebrew Launcher on SysNAND through the entrypoint of your choice (You CANNOT use menuhax for this)
5. Launch the arm9loaderhax installer

Can I use browserhax for this or does this require one of the exploit games?

I used Browserhax, yep. As long as it doesn't require a reboot, anything is fair game.

Also: AuReiNand 3.10 just came out! Seems like mostly stability upgrade stuff, but also the folder is now called aurei instead of rei. To celebrate I made my own custom splash screen, which I didn't know you could do with ARN until now.

huh, weird. I used menuhax for this step and nothing bad happened. I had it set to no-button boot (from before, it saved my config) and it automatically loaded after loading minipasta.

I would highly recommend you follow the guide though; don't follow my bad example!

Did Reinand stop being updated? I keep seeing people talk about ARN, and not ReiNand.

mainline reinand is updated a lot slower, but still updated. ARN has more advanced A9LH features and that's the new hotness these days.

the real question is, does anybody use rxtools anymore? I haven't heard anything about that in months.

When I followed the guide for A9LH, I essentially started from scratch just in case (backed up saves, wiped my emunand, started clean, since I didn't have a lot of stuff installed that wasn't downloaded from eshop and I still had the CIAs from my 4 ripped carts).

The guide had you use Cakes FW to set everything up, and stuck with Cakes FW when setting up A9LH.

Is there any reason to switch to AuReiNand over CakesFW or am I good to stick with Cakes for now?

The guide has instructions for that. It just involves replacing some files on your SD card.
