3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

I've only had my 128gb for today and to be honest it is painfully slow, .cia's take way longer to install, takes longer to load and also more annoyingly, loading things like OTPHelper the borders/button prompts load but the actual options take anywhere from 10-20seconds to load.

Maybe I've formatted it wrong but it was a decent samsung card directly from amazon and its on fat32 with 32kb cluster

I've noticed that my 128 GB Samsung EVO takes some more time to load files and icons than my 64 GB card, but in-game performance and CIA installing is the same, as far as I can tell.

Bear in mind, though, that you're using a card whose size exceeds what Nintendo officially supports (up to 32 GB, IIRC) and that you've probably had to use a third-party program to format it to FAT32, since Windows doesn't allow such large partitions in anything other than exFAT or NTFS. Some minor compatibility issues are bound to happen... though so far they have never bothered me, truth be told.

So, thanks to you guys for linking me to it, I'm following Plailect's guide and I'm now at part 3 of the guide and in the process of setting up the emunand via EMUNAND9 on my Old3DS (I was already on 9.2. firmware and following the guide I now can boot straight into HBLoader by pressing down on the d-pad when powering on the system)

I have two problems, in the guide it says to ignore the starter.bin prompt and keep going.
I get this warning and I don't know if this is normal (ie the above mentioned prompt I can skip) or something I need to fix and the reason the process fails in the end (read below).

When I go for "complete emunand setup" it tells me that
"emunand file system is corrupt or unknown, continuing without starter.bin"
Is it normal? I mean the emunand can't be corrupt of course since I haven't even created it yet...

So if I go past the warning and do that Down Left Right A (iirc) to wipe the sd and, I guess, dump my sysnand as emunand, the process fails and tells me:

"Unknown error / something went wrong here";
"Format this SD card from your PC first";
"Then try this again"

Yet I checked and to me it looks like I have everything set up right?

If you guys maybe feel like having a look into it I'd appreciate it lots, thanks!

Got my 3DS with arm9/aureinand fully sorted now with 128gb card :)

What is the best way to take my carts and rip them onto my 3DS to use digitally? Will be awesome to store my carts away as Nintendo is one of the few I still like to buy physical

This is the guide I used to dump my carts.

https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/comments/40etaz/tutorial_dumping_3ds_carts_and_converting_3ds/

However, instead of using Brahma2 you can use a9lhax versions of uncart and decrypt9 to speed up the process, which you can find here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/3dshacks/comments/47t6fy/info_thread_a9lh_installed_now_what/

I don't know if it helps but since the error recommends to format the SD on your PC I would just give it a try (and backup all files before that). Use SD Formatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4
(maybe full overwrite with size adjustment on, just to be safe).

Yeah I forgot to add that I've tried that using fat32gui but no dice.
Can't I just use a different, new 2GB card to just dump my sysnand to and then set up the rest manually instead of hitting the "complete set-up" to have emunand9 do all the leg work automatically?

Btw, again, is it normal the message at the beginning saying it can't find starter.bin? The guide isn't clear on that although it does mention to not worry about "the starter.bin prompt", so I just dunno if that's the prompt the guide is referring to or not.

?

Can only help you with the starter.bin bit, always popped up when I did it so I assume its fine :)

I did this and everything is fine but I still need to re-partition the new sd card to use the extra 96GBs. Then re-copy the 10+GBs of music...
i don't understand, why are you using the 3DS to listen to music?

holding the 3DS it self is painful , and even if the 3DS play the music while the led closed is not good idea, i use any mobile phone for that.

Hmmm, on arm9+auireinand. Is it possible to use GBA.cia's ?

I've read

You need to use Palantine CFW/Pasta CFW/RxTools then follow the installation of the fix explained here

But obviously doesn't apply to myself

Well that is useful nonetheless so thanks :)

Maybe he can't risk have his phone running out of juice? Or has a 16gb/8gb iphone where space is too precious?
Can u multitask while using the music player on 3DS, like internet surfing or using the sketchpad to draw?

I wonder can anyone help me with this. I had a soft brick during the downgrade procedure, and it wouldn't boot with or without the SD card present, so I ended up booting into recovery and updating to 10.7. It updated successfully, but now most of my eShop games and associated saves won't show up.

I know I can redownload the games from the eShop, but I'd like to get the saves back too. Any suggestions?

Edit: to clarify, when I insert the SD card a handful of my games appear, but most do not.

Have you tried downloading a game from the eShop and booting it? After I system transferred and re-linked my NNID to my n3DS, I found that my AC:NL and Club Nintendo Picross saves automatically restored themselves when I booted the games.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that didn't work for me.

I did however discover that somehow during the process I created a second folder in the 3DS\[string of numbers and letters] directory, and merging the contents of them both restored my games and saves.

At least I got my games back and got eShop access, but I guess that's no more homebrew for me unless I can get hold of a copy of Cubic Ninja.

Can't speak for the other poster, but I keep music and audiobooks on my 3DS because I don't have any freaking room on my freaking 16gb iPhone. *glares at Apple*

It's really a perfectly good audio player as long as you have one of the non-XL models. It will play music in sleep mode as long as you have headphones plugged in, and I can play and pause audio tracks via the button on my headphones just like I can with my phone. AND I copy stuff onto it without opening the monster that is iTunes. *glares at Apple again*

I tried the guide on reddit to convert a game I bought as a retail version to a cia file with uncart and decrypt9.
Worked fine so far. Uncart created a 3DS file, decrypt9 successfully created the xorpad files, simple cia converter made the cia file. No errors and the cia installs and plays fine.
But on the upper screen and when starting the game the 3DS shows a notification that an update is available. But the game never got a patch and my card doesn't show the notification either.
Is this normal? Anything I can do about that? I hope that's ok to ask here.

I haven't had to update any games that I've backed up, but I haven't had this issue either. The only thing I want to mention, since you haven't referenced it yet (but it's a natural consequence of moving from physical to digital), is that SVDT works very well for backing up -- and transferring -- saves from physical cards to digital ones. The only possible wrinkle is that the program (appropriately) treats .cia titles and cards as exactly the same, meaning that you should run the program first with the card installed and note the timestamp of the saves. Then remove the cart, run the program again, and transfer them over to the .cia version. For instance, I was able to transfer over *all* of my Fire Emblem data, including DLC.

Thank you. Yes exporting and importing the save file worked fine as well.
I just re-did the whole process but still get the update notification. But since there's no patch I only get an error when I press update.
Really confusing.

I do not own a mobile phone, my new 3ds xl fits into my pockets just fine when it is closed, and it works great as an mp3 player. Why would I need to be holding my 3ds to listen to music? Just start the album with headphones plugged in, put the ds into sleep mode, and put it into my pockets.

EDIT: I also did get my emunand brought over to the 128gb microsd and re-partitioned it and everything works correctly now.

Oh interesting, thanks. Good to know at least that it's an expected issue and the explanation in the link makes sense.
Still confusing why this is happening in the first place but a good starting point for figuring out how to fix it.

What's best to use with Arm9Loader: Cakes or AuReiNAND? I want to set it up, but I want to use whichever is the best. I don't know how hard it is to change between the two, so I want to set up the best when I do everything and not have to worry about changing later.

If you use a boot manager such as arm9select you can have both Cakes and AuReiNand installed at the same time. I have my 3DS default to AuReiNand but if I press b on boot it loads Cakes.

Does AuReiNAND supports N3DS SysNAND 9.2 + emunand 10.7 setup, or is it only for arm9loader?
Or what CFW is recommended for such a setup?

What's the best guide for installing CFW on an original 3DS? It's already on Firmware 9.2

I've done the whole process with my N3DS, but I know some things are different for the older systems.

It works, but Reinand has a better boot rate for me with that setup. YMMV.

I have RxTools set up (no idea why btw, I just followed a guide) and I want to follow that guide for a9lhax. Where do I even begin?

I'm thinking it'd probably be easier to just backup saves, format the entire SD and start all over by following that guide. But then again I don't even know how I'd even update RxTools.

Or maybe I shouldn't mess with it, I'm not having any issues and just wanted a faster boot.

OK as normal with the type of scene you stop taking notice for 2 weeks and something new appears, what the hell is redNAND that people are talking about now and how is it better than emuNAND??

Read the Home and Get Started pages, it tells you what to do if you already have CFW set up. There's not much point getting rid of it first.

The guide has you make backups as part of the process.

3DSs come with different sizes of flash memory (listed here). EmuNAND makes a partition matching your actual NAND on your SD card. If you have the larger size for your model not all the space is used. With RedNAND the partition can be shrunk to the smaller size, so you retain a few more usable MBs. Otherwise there's no practical difference.

Guys, I have a question:

I currently have an American o3dsxl. I bought an European n3ds and I want to transfer my emunand from the o3dxl to the n3ds. Is it possible? Or I'll have to make a new emunand on the n3ds and copy my game saves from the o3dsxl?

need urgent help

i was trying to downgrade my n3ds (from 9.9)
every time i started sysupdate, i wouldnt see the arm11, step 1 - 8 messages and it goes directly to the downgrade options
there's a modified sysupdate on gbatemp that fixed this, i tried it out and it worked for me
so after doing this probably for 20 mins, i finally go through the steps 1 - 8 and started the downgrade process
i saw that the cias were installing continuously so i left it aside for a few mins
i check up on it and it was a black screen
i left it for like 5 more minutes and nothing changed
i opted to turn it off because i know when the downgrade ends, it restarts

now my 3ds turns on into a black screen
if i turn it off with the button press i actually get the regular turn off screen, flashes the home menu loading screen and freezes

i'm pretty much screwed right?

Doesn't sound like a hard brick at all, try booting without SD.

Worst case scenario you can probably boot into recovery mode by holding A+R+L+Up(DPad) and update to 10.7

yep, booting w/o sd card did the trick
i kinda panicked before googling it, apparently some menuhax conflict
thanks for the quick response

Are you fully on 9.2 now?

And those 8 steps aren't there anymore, you shouldn't have had to go find an old version. Just follow the main guide mate.

when it started up, it was as if i updated the firmware and i checked the system, says 9.2
the downgrade never worked without the steps 1-8 first
i tried many times with the regular 0.4.2 sysupdater
all the youtube tutorials (yes i know those are old) shows those steps first, so i just did that

Random question, but I finally got back into this and dumped a few of my games to test with Citra, Majora's Mask works fine but how do I upscale it? I do not see an option?

Quick question. I've just did the downgrade and now I've the emuNAND and sysNAND not linked and it's cool because I can use shop and play online again.

I want to ask if is possible to set some sort of autoboot from menuhax to load first the emuNAND. I've cakeFW and I've to boot it manually from the homebrew channel, is it possible to make it load emuNAND first and sysNAND only if I want?

Even if I've to press some buttons at the start (example: hold "R" to boot emuNAND, press nothing for sysNAND).

Thanks :D

Yeah menuhax install type 2 does that. Let's you set a key where if you press that then it doesn't load cfw but otherwise defaults into cfw. Opposite of type 1 install.

But really, screw all that and go al9h
