3DS HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/carts/applications/games]

so this wild section appeared

Up to this point we needed to sacrifice a 3ds with the region we wanted in order to switch another one to that region which make the whole process to most people useless since you already have a 3ds from the desired region. But that link have no mention of that so my question is: did we get any new way of switching regions (the full thing: ehsop access to the new region and online play) without the need of another 3ds being sacrificed at the alter?

So the One Click process from OTP is now running on my N3DS...kind of scary!.
It's taking quite a long time, but luckily there's a lot feedback on the screen, it's still running!

The best thing you can do to your modded 3DDS. Boot rate at 100%, direct boot into your cfw, and recovery ooptions if you fuck things up (boot with specific buttons).

Edit: use this guide: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

It's foolproof. If you follow the steps carefully, and ask here on on the irc if you have any questions, no brick will be shat.

Just gonna say that over the course of a few days (It doesn't take days I just had limited time) I did this entire tutorial and it worked like a charm.

At the end I have my SysNAN and emuNAND backups, boot directly into SysNAND with cfw, and have homebrew access from the main menu.

A+++++ would hack again.

Can you still run GBA cias on arm9lh?
Actually i have Reinand with separated Emu and Sys nands, and as far as i known you only can run GBA cias by installing it in both nands.

Well, I'm fucked yay!
I did my Tinyformat sysnand step of the tutorial but somehow my sysnand.bin didn't actually transfer from SD card to PC folder for backup, so even tho I have everything else (3ds folder, private, games...) I won't be able to restore it and lost all my digital purchases.

I can"t believe I did such a noob mistake, it's all on me, my fault entirely for not checking again and again.
Thank god my only retail digital title was RE Mercenaries but I still had plenty NES/GB/GBC VC titles, GBA ambassador games, Umihara Kawase, PW5 Dual Destinies, Attack of the Friday Monsters, Zen Pinball, Marvel Pinball, Steamworld Dig and a bunch of others... more than €150 worth of titles for sure.

Fuck :(

Was it all linked to your nnid? Call nintendo and just say a format happened and you didn't understand and need your games back.

ouch that sucks.

i wonder if you could at least call Nintendo and tell them to restore your NNID to the 3DS. just say your system got formatted by mistake.

i did this when my NNID became unusable after tinkering with some formatting but then it was a throwaway NNID without much stuff (only reason i wanted it back was that it had Four Swords Anniversary Edition)

a situation like this is why i never tried any homebrew in my main units. imo it's all quite risky, unlike the original Wii homebrew.

Yeah, if your current sysNAND isn't associated with a NNID, you should be able to link it and download everything again. Worst case scenario is that you need Nintendo to unlink the NNID from your now-defunct NAND, but since they're generated on a per-console basis, you don't even need to bother with stories about police reports or failed system transfers.

Almost there...
Now in the final steps before installing a9lh itself

Something I'm curious about...
What is Firmware_NTR_n3DS (with the firmware.bin) and why is it seperated from aureinand itself? The tutorial tells me to put in into the aurei folder, but why isn't it already there (as part of the aureinand archive) ?

Because the firmware file you need depends on your 3DS model and system version(s).

So I have a GBA cia installed on AuReiNAND as well as SysNAND , but it's not letting me run it, it just crashes to a black screen. On a9lh. What else do I need to do to get it to run... ?

I am interested in CFW since I read that it boots directly into CFW now.

1) Is is true that you have to manually boot into CFW in the past? And now it can boot directly into CFW?
2) Can I undo it (i.e remove CFW) and back to the 3DS original state?
3) Does CFW improve / reduce battery life? Particularly, sleep mode.

Sorry if these are lazy questions, I read through the guide on github and no mention of removing / uninstalling the CFW.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Not that I'm aware of

Major update (v4.0.1) to AuReiNAND just committed by Aurora:
https://github.com/AuroraWright/AuReiNand/releases/tag/v4.0.1

A lot of cool features there, most notable for me is patching region free into ARN:

  • To override the last used boot mode on soft reboot, you only need to press A if you want to boot to the default option. Holding L(+payload button)/R is enough for the other modes.
  • Added version number to the config menu
  • Replaced the memsearch algorithm with a faster one
  • Added version number to the config menu
  • Integrated 3ds_injector from @yifanlu. This brings us region free and all the other FreeMultiPatcher patches. Other than that, you now have the possibility to display the currently booted NAND/FIRM in System Settings!
  • Rewritten most code for the config menu. You now can navigate to the first/last options with left and right.
  • You can now choose the 9.0 FIRM to be default in the config menu. This will essentially switch "no buttons" and L in both modes.
  • You can now choose the second emuNAND to be default in the config menu. This will essentially switch "B is not pressed" and "B is pressed".
  • When the second emuNAND is booted, it will persist like the other boot options on soft reboot
  • You can now choose the second emuNAND to be default in the config menu. This will essentially switch "B is not pressed" and "B is pressed".
  • Bugfixes

I saw the (really complete) guide of OTP with all steps for that sweet sweet AL9H, but I also saw that AuReiNand and Cakes are the ones referenced, I've been out of the loop for some weeks, so how is the state of the art with CFW now? I had ReiNand..

so, AuReiNand, Cakes or ReiNand? and why?

Assuming I have installed arm9loaderhax, the correct way to uninstall it is to restore my previous SysNAND backup?

Restore a pre-A9LH Sysnand backup to uninstall it.

Used to use CakesFW but switched to AuReiNand because I rarely messed with CakesFW's settings and because AuReiNand updates are very frequent. Also, AuReiNand automatically prevents FIRM0/FIRM1 updates, so that you won't accidentally hardbrick your N3DS when you update to the newest firmware (O3DS will only have A9LH uninstalled instead of getting hardbricked). CakesFW also prevents the FIRM updates, but you have to manually enable it, so I get paranoid if a kid borrows my N3DS and messes with the FIRM update settings without me noticing.

I haven't used ReiNand, so I can't give any feedback on that.

The dev who came up with the new patching method wrote a really interesting blog post explaining how it works and the various challenges he overcame in developing it. It does a good job making some of the inner workings of the 3DS easy to understand.

Did i screw somewhere?

I have been using Ninjhax as an entry point to the Homebrew Launcher (all the way) and managed to install A9LH.

Now I have installed the HBLauncher CIA file and without Ninjhax in the cart slot, I am not able to launch the Homebrew launcher? Is that intended?

I just did this today as well.

If you followed all the steps correctly, you should have installed the homebrew .cia file in part 5, which would have put a program/app on your home screen that will allow you to launch the homebrew launcher.

EDIT: BTW, for those who are wondering... It takes about 6-8 hours to do everything from start to finish using the guide for a N3DS, using a class 10 SD card. Just a warning.

Surely it depends on how full your 3DS is?

That's a factor, sure. But 95% of the time is spent backing up and restoring various NANDs, plus copying them to your computer. So, the speed of the SD card; USB 2.0/3.0; and the size and amount of games stored on the SD card all factor into it.

The fastest way to do it would be to homebrew a virgin 3DS, then System Transfer games onto it once the process is complete.

My New 3DS just arrived and it was on 9.8. What is the safest way to downgrade it to 9.2?
Plailect's guide was updated to use his own fork of PlaiSysUpdater, which is modified for more reliable downgrade to 2.1, but is it suitable for 9.2 too?

There is not really much alternative and PlaiSysUpdater seems to be the most improved version right now so I would use that.
It's based on SafeSysUpdater, which works fine to downgrade to 9.2. I used that to downgrade my 3DS from 9.9 (although I did end up with a partial downgrade at first but that's usually fixable with a second downgrade. Worked for me).
The alternative would be the normal SysUpdater (that older versions of the guide recommended) but I couldn't get it to run even after hours of trying.

Thanks for the heads-up! One question, though, how do you tell if you are with a partial downgrade?

Make sure you have an internet connection. The installed cia will try to download the payload that is neccessary to boot into the launcher.
You may have to hold either x or y to save the payload sd. If you don't, it will require internet every time.

If the downgrade doesn't finish like showing an error and needing a reboot only the files so far are downgraded while the rest isn't.
The downgrader tells you at the end that it's finished and the system will reboot in 10seconds. That's when the downgrade is complete.

I'm on a9hl sysnand and I'm trying to access the eshop on a region-swapped emunand with the latest aureinand (cosmo3ds stuff)

My current emunand is still linked to my other region nnid, can I simply format it from the system settings safely or will it mess with my sysnand / format my sd card?

Well, I ended up with a partial downgrade.
Like you said, there was an error trough the downgrade. The upper screen turned black, while the bottom displayed a message "an error has occured. Hold down the POWER Button to turn off the power, then turn it on and try again. If the problem persists, please contact your local customer support centre. For contact details, check the Operations Manual or visit support.nintendo.com". Restarted one time and it was just black screens. Turned it off again, removed the microSD card, turned it on and it booted. System settings shows 9.2.0-20E.

So, what now? My heartbeat rate is way too high... do the steps again, or try with a different memory card?

Yes, that's a partial downgrade. Just repeat the steps and try it again until the downgrade is complete.

Well, what the... that's the message I got the second time:
http://i.imgur.com/pNP2Ssx.jpg (sorry for the flash, but without it its all messy)
What happened is that I once again booted browserhax, installed menuhax, started PlaiSysUpdater, clicked Y it checked few things, downgraded ONE file and said it's successful. It did not reboot, so I had to hold down the power button, but then it started normaly with the sdcard.
Is that it? Is it fully downgraded now? I'm not sure anymore...

Thank you for your support!

Why does this damn guide change daily? WTF is a RedNAND?
I was just going through the whole process on my o3DS yesterday, stopped at part IV (just before the downgrade to 2.1) and now there is no emuNAND, only RedNAND.

Don't say i have to go through the whole process again...

At the top 'Plailect edited this page 7 hours ago · 85 revisions' click on revisions to go back to older versions of the guide.
Red/emuNAND are only used shortly during the guide to downgrade to 2.1 and for that it doesn't really matter which one you use.
If you already have an emuNAND there's no need to redo everything just for an redNAND.
