3DS system update unifies Wii U & 3DS eShop balances

Because if I lose my system there's a very good chance I've lost over a thousand dollars worth of software with it whether that software was installed or not. Sure, the same thing could happen with a physical library. But I don't ever remember a time where I went anywhere with my entire DS library at once.
 
I will not be satisfied until my StreetPass data is recoverable.

At which point I can actually send in this damn 3DS to get it's trigger and hinge fixed, or just buy another 3DS.

This is something i was fearing.

Also, officially, we're not entitled to use club nintendo and there have been cases where the games earned with the coins or promotions were deleted because of this.

It will be a "wait and see" for me

It makes all the sense in the world, they are companies, they like money, they don't even "sell" you their games, they only give you a license to use them.

If you have one console in your living room yes, all people can login, buy games and play them. If you own two consoles it depends, if both are yours no problem, you can use both, if one is for your little brother in theory no, you cannot let him use your account, he has to create his own. Enforcing that is a terrible hassle not worth it, so they won't do anything, but if your little brother goes to college and takes the console and keeps playing the games with your account, these companies are completely free to ban it based on those grounds, in that case is more enforceable, since they can see the login times and ips of both consoles as being in very different locations. They won't do it because it is still a hassle, but they are perfectly free to do it, you clearly didn't read that small print.

Seriously if I can have a new hardware and easily deactivate my account on old system (on my Nintendo account page on their website for example) I really don't care.

Seriously all I need is cross buy or at least if this is two different versions (3DS and Wii U have very specific hardware features so...) then I want a 50% rebate on the 2nd game :p

My wife, two kids and I all own a 3DS and we also have two Wii U systems in the house. A game downloaded by one of us is only playable on that individual's system, which means that multiple copies of digital games need to be purchased if its a game that we're all interested in or that we continually swap 3DS systems. Its a ridiculous restriction and discourages the purchasing of any digital games rather than encouraging us to buy multiple copies.

I would gladly go all digital for the convenience of not swapping carts and avoiding the possibility of game cartridges/discs being damaged/lost by the kids, but its obviously a non-starter until such time as games can be accessed across all the systems my family own. I'm not even looking for cross device purchases (Wii U/3DS) or the ability for multiple family members to play a digital game at one time, although those would obviously be nice bonuses, just for each member of my family to be able to access the content that we purchased on all of our individual devices.

I'm sure many people also own both a 3DS and 3DS XL - its easy to imagine a scenario whereby an individual prefers to use the original model away from home, due to its greater portability, and the XL at home because of the larger screens. Why should these individuals not be able to access their digital purchases on both?

A significant percentage of Nintendo's customer base is accounted for by families, which in many instances own multiple versions of the same device and, until such time as they allow these customers to access their content on multiple systems, its going to prove nigh on impossible to transistion them to the digital model, something which Nintendo seems very much interested in doing these twelve months past.

Generally, when people bemoan the fact that Nintendo is out of step with the rest of the industry, I shake my head and think long may it continue, but, in this instance, I'm in full agreement with the naysayers - they desperately need to introduce a proper account system comparable to that offered by the competiton.

Now get off my lawn. ;p

Yes ive read the fine print. I dont care and neither do these companies. Did you also know that you're not allowed to sell your physical games? They dont care. I didn't say they cant do it, I said that they won't. Because it would be insanely stupid. Which is why none of them give a shit that people share accounts or that they even go so far as to advertise that you can do it like Sony has been doing with the roaming account.

I mean if you want to look out for a company's best interests, sure, go ahead. But last time I checked, company's don't post on message boards, people do. And generally people do not prefer buying multiple copies of the same software for each of their individual devices.

Really? I'm from Brazil but I use my club nintendo and wii u account with a USA address. Doesn't make sense to me register as a Brazil console.

That's it, I am not registering my NNID. I constantly change between MX and US, so I won't be using the unified account/balance.
It really sucks for Latin America.

1. Ability to migrate accounts to new systems at will and have a single account on two DS units. For instance, I'm going to upgrade to a 2DS. I'd like my Wife to still be able to play downloaded games on my OG 3DS. Some sort of Family program here.

2. VC games should be playable on both systems, no matter which system they were purchased for. Full stop. This needs to bring in other eShop content as well when possible. Lets make this seems like a single long-lived ecosystem.
 
A personal anecdote to add weight to the unified system for families thing:

I have a wife and three kids.

In my household there are 3 iPads and 4 iPhones yet only one iTunes account. If I bought an app for my daughter and couldn't just download the app so her brother could play it at the same time... well, I probably wouldn't have 3 iPads and 4 iPhones.

In my household there is one 3DS, and since I play it so often I'm pretty much the only person who does. That will never change until Nintendo get with the times. Not only am I not buying the extra systems, there's actually a sizable library of games that I'm not buying because they're the kind of games I'd traditionally buy for my wife and kids but don't because I'm not sharing my system... the games I buy are for me and me alone.

I don't have evidence but I suspect that a household like mine makes up a very large part of Nintendo's customer base.

wtf are you talking about?

Nintendo are the ONLY ones that let you transfer your whole WiiWare/VC collection to Wii U. Now even including adding support to play those on the Wii U gamepad - without paying a single cent.

Nintendo are also the only ones, that let you play your last-gen game library on their next-gen system ... again ... without any additional costs. Your post is absolutely silly.
 
I imaging a family account system. Where you can have up to 5 or 6 accounts grouped together, with 1 account acting as the parent account. From there the accounts have a shared balance and share games (1 user per game at a time, unless multiple copies bought? - This brings weirdness), and then you lock parental controls with the parent account (who can purchase games, ratings, etc), and who can use which system. Things like that.

The question becomes what happens when someone leaves the family group, and things like that.

Lots of things to think about here. Lots of things for Nintendo to think about. Big thing here, is that they shouldn't think about this as an individual users thing, they should think in scenarios with multiple users using multiple systems.

Exactly. With a card or disc game, you can move it around freely. The same needs to be true of DD games. Other digital vendors have solutions for this. Nintendo seems terrified of the idea of someone playing a DD game on 2 devices - even though physical games, especially on portables, are obviously shared all the time.

Fair enough, I had heard Nintendo was charging some bullshit tax to get people's VC games onto the Wii U, my snarky comment was made more in terms of 3DS VC games not carrying across to Wii or Wii U even though they're identical.
However you could stand to do a little research of your own if you're throwing out "ONLY" in caps. Ever heard of the PSP and Vita? Virtual PS1 games across PS3, PSP, and Vita? Crossbuy PS3/Vita games? That's the kind of cross device support I want from manufacturers, across an entire home console to handheld ecosystem all from the same account. I won't even mention PC games because that wouldn't even be fair on poor old consoles

I agree that it sucks that XBLA and PSN games don't transfer to the new generation, but I do accept that there is an actual system architecture reason for that. With the new x86 architectures backward compatibility should be much easier in the generations to come.

In my case I don`t want to play online games with another country`s flag. So I have one account from Canada where I buy my games, and another one from Brazil, where I play them.

Absolutely. How did Sony get this so right and Nintendo so wrong? Flower purchased for PS3 is now available as cross buy for Vita. Why can't I play ALTTP on my 3DS right now? I bought it on my Wii!

Couldn't this be going down the tube with PS4, though? We aren't sure if things we'll have to repurchase things again or not. (I could be way off base here, so maybe someone could clarify). I don't see a lot of stink being raised about that.

What Nintendo did get right is BC. I can play ALTTP on my Wii U for instance without any problems. Sony has to port their games for them to work. But Flower has been confirmed to be one of the games being ported to PS4 and it will be available for free for people who bought it on PS3.

Just give me Nintendo's backwards compatibility and Sony's account system and I'll be happy :).

I guess probably because with a physical cartridge it is still being used by only one individual at a time, maybe they don't want you to basically pay for one DD game and essentially get 2 or more by being able to have multiple devices have that download and use it at the same time. They've said before that the reason they charge for DD games the same price as their physical counterpart is because they don't want the games to be devalued by a price difference (which I think is BS) but maybe they'll say the same about DD games, that they don't want people to think "let me buy it digital cuz I can get more than one."
 
Nintendo's not going to allow sharing of digital games between different 3DS. They've already voiced their stance on that and said if you want to share your copy of a title then buy the physical card. They really want everyone to buy their own copy of Animal Crossing, Pokémon and Mario Kart though.

I do think we'll see a cross-buy like VC option though, or at least a discount like the Wii to Wii U upgrade fee. I keep wondering if that's what they're holding SMB3 back for?

Also, kinda off topic, but I bought a Zelda 3DS XL bundle today and transferred all my data over to the new 3DS XL from my old one. I'm giving the old one to my kids, but, of course, they can't play Animal Crossing on there anymore. So I called up Nintendo and tried to see if there's a way they can move just AC:NL to the old DS, but no dice. The tech said it was impossible.

Fuck.
