3rd Party Presence on the NGP

So the 'Next Generation Portable' has finally been revealed! The games shown off from Sony first party and second party are quite visually impressive and seem to take great advantage of the wide variety of control functions.

One of my major concerns, however, is the lack of 3rd party game announcements for the system. We know developers have had dev kits for quite a while. It is very surprising that virtually no 3rd party games have been fully announced.

Will developers (particularly western devs) shy away from the NGP after being burned by the fate of PSP games? Or are they just waiting for E3 to make their announcements? With the 3DS, Nintendo has made sure that the public is aware of the enthusiasm from developers since its reveal.

If I was a developer, I would be quite apprehensive to develop a high budget exclusive due to the dramatic effects that rampant piracy had on software sales in the west.

It seems Sony will try to make piracy as challenging as possible (no removable battery, increased network integration), but many developers could be taking the wait-and-see approach.

Sony deliberately didn't show any apparently.

Mario was complaining that Sidhe jumped a bunch of hoops to get trailers done in time, yet Sony didn't show them.

Everyone who went on stage also mentioned "I'm not showing/can't show any games today."

Why they decided to do this is beyond me.

They're just holding back for E3 I think. The whole event had the stink of "we have to show this before the 3DS goes on sale no matter what we have".

Hmm, interesting stuff. I would have liked to see third party support played up a bit more...

Yeah, I'm absolutely baffled by this. It's one thing if the games weren't ready to be shown at all, but apparently that's not the case.

If they could show, but didn't, totally idiotic move. It makes the system look much less "ready" for 2011 than it actually is.

Hell, it's not even footage. Even franchise announcements (like Call of Duty, or like Nintendo's list at E3 2010) would make them look better.

So really not a single game got announced during the first party talks? I went to bed right as that started to happen with Capcom not showing anything but a Monster Hunter teaser.

Yeah, I'd have to say they are holding back for E3 also. They showed some great first party support which impressed me more then anything. Maybe enough so that Uncharted could be the launch game that supports the console for the most part. I say that only because it got demo'ed this early but I guess we shall see.

I think it might have been because it's still early. The announcement (the system doesn't even have a final name, it's being called 'NGP') feels like it's a response to the upcoming 3DS launch.

By contrast, the Nintendo equivalent of this announcement was just a simple letter.

I'm sure Sony will show more games at E3.

Well, I guess Call of Duty got "announced", but it was just a logo with no subtitle or anything.

It makes sense not to show too much. They still have to show stuff at GDC, E3 and TGS before launch. All this event had to do was show the system and name drop Monster Hunter and Call of Duty, it did that.

Maybe they aren't prepared or even willing to go head first into the PSP2? They should have learned their lesson after the last time when they put all their eggs into one basket (HD). There is no firm release date for the device or price. The 3DS is coming out very soon so why would they want to take the focus off the games they have coming out for that?

There's really no good reason not to show a third party sizzle reel if they had one. I wonder if they're saving it for an event in the US or something.

My guess is third parties will wait and see how it sells before jumping full in. Software sales on the last PS portable werent too hot.

Not even in the slightest. In terms of timeframe relative to launch and what was shown to the press, the "Nintendo equivalent" was E3 2010.

Not true.

At that time 3DS was originally planned to be released at the end of the year.

There are no third parties. If third parties weren't showing off their games at a Sony press event in January with a release date of Winter 2011 then there are no 3rd party games. BAIL OUT!

i think for what they showed at the meeting was enough (which was NGP reveal). saving the rest for E3 for the general public

To be fair, we were at least told that the 3DS was intended to be released late last year, and there's still plenty of time for Sony's system to slip.

Maybe they pulled it because some of the 3rd party games looked like ass and they didn't want any bad graphics knocking down their first reveal of the system.

When you look at Japanese developers efforts on the PS3 this gen...some are more "HD-gen" looking than others :P

Im guessing Sony wants people just to focus on the hardware for now. I'm sure at E3 there will be plenty of 3rd party offerings.

Yea this is my biggest concern other than the price. After PSP, I am wondering if people want to acually go 'all in' on a handheld that will have development prices comparable to the PS360. I've always thought this is dangerous territory.

I don't think after PS3 and PSP, it's only natural now to be skeptical about the type of development support they'll see.

GDC is next month. less than a month before 3DS launch. E3 is after 3DS launch. i guess he wants them to all show and show what they got.
Nintendo will sell every 3DS they can produce this year, the 2012 line up is what actually matters, and they'll both roll it out at E3 I imagine.

Yoshida seemed to suggest E3 when asked about third parties. Methinks it's simply because that's what most publishers pivot their promotion and marketing around.

I don't think that's a smart move when your competition is 6-8 months ahead of you. The timing of this event relative to the 3DS launch was blatantly not coincidental - even if they only have names of titles/franchises rather than footage, they should be pulling out all the stops.

They've done enough, from a 'spoiler' POV, imo. The web has been alight with this and the reaction seems to have been extremely positive.

You know, they didn't even properly announce Uncharted. No name, no trailer, no story. It was basically a tech demo to show off the graphics, touch and gyro capabilities of the console.

Don't forget that there's also GDC 2011 coming up in a few weeks where NGP will surely have a presence. PSP1 was announced originally at GDC (well, the system was announced with an official statement and detailed with some mock-ups, but the specs and the Death Jr. unveiling were at that show) and that's the right place to have a 3rd Party-oriented unveiling. This show did its job more than reasonably, no reason to overkill in one event (especially since this event wasn't broadcast or even loaded with a post-show media blitz like E3, so those of us at home saw very little of the show.)

It is weird that developers were asked to submit a reel but then it wasn't shown, however. That's quite odd. Shame Sony put them through that hell.

I'd assume it'll get massive support (probably far more than the 3DS)...although I'm not sure much will be exclusive.

If it's on PS3/360..it'll likely be on this.

I fully expect to see the market flooded with a mass of 360/PS3 ports..which will serve it very well ....in the short term.

Of course there is also a strong chance of some 3DS games appearing on the machine..and 3rd parties may not wish to risk sales of the 3DS versions at this point in time (although knowing Capcom you can expect to hear about NGP versions of their 3DS games...the week before the 3DS games come out).

i think they'll talk about the process of getting games on NGP. and what kinds of things we'll see that is possible now and in the future. Hopefully they have a secret game that wasn't shown at the meeting to show (but then again the meeting was really meant for the invited).

anyways. i'm not complaining since the devs I want are there already. anyone else is welcomed.

I see this as Sony just really wanting to show off the power of the handheld, and showing off original games in an unfinished state may not be the best showcase compared to having tangible PS3 games being rendered on the handheld.

It's also a gong show I suppose. Sony wants to stress their support for the handheld, and a good way of doing that would be too ignore the third parties.

As someone said in a different thread. They did ask third party developers to come up with footage, but decided not to show it at last night's event.

Not sure if that is because they felt it wasn't representative, or because they want to keep that for the next PR salvo...

Amir0x said:
if by excellent you just mean it gets a lot of half-assed ports that are incalculably inferior to versions that come out on 360 then sure
That's hardly accurate. Most games released now are fairly equal, and your post assumes it's even possible to make them equal and publishers are just choosing not to do so.

I think the PS3 has a better library than the 360 and Wii, and it's in last place.

Agree. They showed a lot of first party stuff. They're obviously just trying not to blow their load, space out announcements, and keep the hype at a constant. If they'd shown everything tonight, it would be a long wait of no news or new hype until November. Pretty classic reveal really - we got spoiled by how amazing 3ds' reveal was in terms of software. I think they should have shown at least 1 or 2 3rd party games though just to avoid the "psp2 haz no gamez!!" thing.
