4 Guys 1up - 12/18/2009 - Games, dammit!

goddam I cannot stand scooter and he's finding his way into all the 1up podcasts.

It's not just his voice, it's his mannerisms as well. Scooter is good at his job and I enjoy reading his work but he is a terrible podcaster.

That said, I enjoyed the heavy rain discussion. Looking forward to this game.
He sounds like he has hamburgers in his mouth!

yeah he is completely unbearable to listen to; shame really - his writing is great.

I think Scooter is an excellent addition to all of these podcasts.

Every podcast I listen to makes Heavy Rain seems less and less interesting.

I'm hoping it's just the holidays that are making things difficult to schedule. I really don't want this to turn into the Dave Ellis featuring the David Ellis Band podcast. Hopefully after the new year there will be more guests.

I'm only halfway through the Bad Company 2 discussion so maybe it changes, but you guys sound like it almost pains you to say the game looks good? Bad Company was the best multiplayer shooter of last year, more of the same but refined (and this time on the PC!!) sounds pretty excellent to me.

I somewhat disagree with most of the posts in here. For one, the Mass Effect spoiler section was handled perfectly; timestamps were specifically mentioned on the podcast. I don't want to have to go to a website to get timestamps for spoilers. They should be edited into the podcast similar to thee ME2 section.

That said, the Heavy Rain spoilers were ridiculous, and unneeded. I skipped the entire Heavy Rain discussion because of this. All of the other game discussions were fine. I appreciate that you guys are staying consistent and giving us a podcast on a weekly basis.

Just got around to listening to this weeks show and I loved it, one of my favourite thus far, really good meaty game discussions and welcomed spoiler warnings, thanks.

The 1UP recap under the download button should give time stamps for spoilers.

Agreed. I came here this morning just to find the time-stamp to avoid the ME2 discussion...since it wasn't in the description for the show. The alternative would have been to just put spoiler-y discussion at the END of the podcast, so the audience can just turn the podcast off.

I couldn't listen very long because of his voice. Is that his normal voice, or does he have horrible sinus problems or something?

I had to skip over the Mass Effect 2 spoilers. What's the deal with spoiling such a story-heavy game over a month before it comes out? Why not just wait until the game comes out? I appreciate some of the more technical preview stuff, but I can't imagine someone wanting to hear the story portions so early.

Pretty much this. The ME2 discussion seemed rather pointless. Anyone interested in playing the game would have to skip that section to avoid spoilers, anyone not planning on playing it doesn't want to hear story minutia about the game. Who exactly was that discussion directed at?

I suppose that game preview discussion can be a tricky business, but I think when the preview discussion turns into "x,y,z is what happens in the first two hours..." thats a pretty lame discussion.

Entertaining show, overall. Heavy Rain is very intriguing, although I suspect its a game a lot of people will buy day 1, play for a few hours, not really enjoy it, but nonetheless feel obligated to post on GAF about how "amazing" it is.

I guess I take back what I said about the spoilers. I listened to the whole thing and found it interesting, and if people dont want to listen they dont have to.

This was the first 4g1u I've listened to.

Is it normal for them to spoil multiple story heavy games months before they are released? Is that the nasally mouthbreathers normal voice or was he just sick?

I've been listening to this podcast and I agree with everyone who thinks it's frustrating to have such detailed spoiler talk for unreleased games. Bring in specifics to highlight certain moments but don't barrage the listener with every story and gameplay detail that has been discovered. Those who care about games like Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain should not be spoiled and those who don't care don't want to hear about every detail.

Hamburger's voice is just normally that way. No, this episode is an exception not the norm.

Listened to the whole thing, loved the Heavy Rain talk but sip the 30 secs about an event with Madison since I know I haven't read about anything close to it yet and wanted that at least to be new to me. And I like Hamburgers, he seems to be able to fill in the blanks that the others seem to keep forgetting about.

I complained about this podcast last week and I'll do it once more and then I'll be done. I'm not gonna be like that guy who bitched about Listen Up, claimed he was done, and then kept coming back.

There is something missing. There is no character, flow, or "ease" to this podcast. It's a chore to listen to. David does 80% of the talking, Matt Leone sounds bored out of his skull to be there (and listening to him talk bores me), and Sam Kennedy, though he sounds like a nice guy, is podcast poison. He doesn't ever seem to believe what he's saying, he'll defer to anyone else's opinion, doesn't stand up for anything he's saying, and is, in general, more boring than Matt Leone. I will never download another podcast that Sam Kennedy is in, but I'll not have to worry about that for a while, at least, because I've finally unsubscribed from this one. After fours years of listening to 1up's flagship podcast every week, that's really disappointing.

David, you yourself do a decent job and I never minded you on previous incarnations of this show. But this is not "The David Ellis Show" and it really does come off that way. Unfortunately it seems there are not many strong personalities left around the 1up office to go back and forth with you.

Anyway, I don't understand this episode, where for the first 70 minutes they talk about literally two games. I know a lot of people wouldn't complain about in-depth talk about two marquee games yet to be released, but maybe that's what I mean about no flow. It just goes on and on; there's no spark. And having 20+ minutes of spoilers for a game no one's played...why? You three could have just had that conversation on your own. Who were you aiming that at?

I'll end on that, but one last thing - Out of them all, Scooter bugs me the least. Yes I can hear the whole hamburger thing in his voice but it doesn't bother me. At least when Scooter's talking he sounds genuinely enthusiastic about what he's saying which is more than anyone could say about Matt Leone.

Both ListenUp and 4G1UP suffer/suffered tremenously from a lack of self-editing. Both Garnett and David let discussion about one game go on for WAY too long, and as a result things get mired and boring in spots.

Also agreed about the spoiler bits. It's one thing to talk about a game that's been out for two weeks like that, it's a whole different story if it's a game that's not even out yet.

This is becoming a serious problem with gaming podcasts in general.

I can't finish games fast enough to appreciate the discussions, if I go ahead and listen I get spoiled. Now they are spoiling games that haven't even released yet.

More companies need to be like Nintendo and lock this shit down.
I can agree with this point. I enjoy listening to podcasts and hearing about people's experiences with the games. Since most of my real life friends aren't into games like I am, I can at least listen to some other dudes shoot the shit about games.

But a lot of sites burn through games so fast sometimes it gets hard to try to appreciate the talk when you haven't played the game yourself yet. Of course it's these sites' jobs to cover the latest games.

But I wonder if they sometimes forget not everyone has access to the latest games all the time. Or for that matter the budget to buy the latest and hottest games every week. It's like sometimes they forget to relate to the "common man/woman" when discussing games. Sometimes...

It's not just this podcast though, other podcasts tread the dangerous "spoiler" territory where stuff slowly starts getting spoiled in conversations.

But I still like this show. Unfortunately, I have to agree about Scooter. He's like the nicest guy, I'm not trying to attack him personally. But sometimes during the podcast, I had to do a double take to understand what he was saying.

His voice is not Mumbles from Dick Tracy movie levels of bad, but just sometimes I had to listen again to get what he was saying. But he did have a great enthusiasm for the games being discussed. :)

I don't really get the complaints about the 'spoilers'. What they spoil is exactly what's in all the latest round of previews for Mass Effect 2/Heavy Rain that every site has up now.

Unless you're on a complete blackout you would have found out that stuff anyway.

Even if every other website out there has the information, it's not interesting to listen to a direct play-by-play of events on a podcast for a game that's not out yet.

I don't care about spoilers. I just think it's boring to so intricately describe specific events and actions taken in a game. It doesn't matter if the game's not out yet, was just released, or has been out for years. It's entertaining when it's discussion about games, not a play-by-play description.

TOO LONG TO QUOTE... LOOK ABOUT 5 POSTS UP
Okay, so I agree. I really don't care about so called "Hamburger Mouth", but I am not loving the flow. Like said before, this show is probably one of the least interesting. I mean EGM Live / 1upYours was great, GFW was amazing, and 1UpFM was awesome featuring those old new guys you fired UGO to make room for the new new guys. UGO, CAN YOU STILL EXPLAIN HOW THE OLD NEW GUYS WERE OVERSHADOWING THE NEW NEW GUYS? Even if they were overshadowing, the NEW NEW GUYS are boring and was happening for good reason. The only show that remains listenable is Retronauts.

After being totally disgusted with the podcast with the Gamasutra guy on 20-Nov-2009 I was more or less done and deleted off my RSS feed. Now that I tried again, I am not sure I am coming back...

I see how you could feel that way. I thought it was fine though.

I really like that it was all about games (...dammit!), because that's mainly what I listen for. Too many podcasts with people complaining there's nothing coming out, and then reading user letters or something.

You are clearly an idiot.

This is as close to a consensus as I've ever seen in one of these threads.

I hope David's still reading this, and will at least take it into consideration.

Reading through the thread. Hindsight being 20/20 there are things I would have done differently with the episode. The suggestion to move the spoiler section to the end was a good one, and if we do something similar in the future we'll probably do that.

Any complaints you guys have with the content of this episode fall with me. I'm still trying to figure out how to put out a quality episode each week. As always I do appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the holiday season.

I decided to give the new Podcast a whirl and ended up really enjoying the Pandemic episode. I'll be dling this one to.

This. Don't let the criticism smart you - its meant to help make it an even better podcast. Cheers.

Why? Because UGO came up with a statement as to why they fired a bunch of clearly their most popular editors from the 1UP networks and then said they needed room to their NEW NEW staff to shine?

i liked the episode, but Red Dead didnt get enough time! that game has such massive potential i would've liked them to discuss it more. but then again they havent got to play it yet so.. i'll wait.

keep it up, still my favorite foreign podcast (im from Finland) though i miss hearing Garrett.
