40 Minute QuakeCon Skyrim Demo

You mean Oblivion's one generic fantasy landscape that encompasses all of Cyrodiil?

Hey, I liked it! But yeah, I accept it was very generic and it was pretty much the same all over. The gold coast and blackwood marsh were a little different, but not much, I think.

As long as the weapons and impacts feel like they have weight to them when playing the game.
It really didn't look it from the combat
It was the same old swinging aimlessly like in Oblivion, i'm really disappointed in that :/
Elder Scrolls needs to take a few tips from Demon's/Dark Souls in the combat department

Did you even play Oblivion? The different parts of the map all had their own style. Bruma+the North was snowy, pine trees, Nord architecture, higher altitude. Bravil+Leyawin were swampy and had more of a cheap shack architecture with corresponding swampy flora, Cheydinhal+the East were very dense style forests and had Dark Elf architecture and that's not to mention the rest of the areas which looked distinct. You could show me a picture of any landscape in Oblivion and I'd be easily able to tell you in what area you are.

Anyone who says all of Oblivion looked the same either never played the game for more than a few hours or is straight up lying.

I wanted to see the water as well. It's a pretty big part of the game and it was absolutely terrible in Bethesda's past games. It looks ok now.

WAT. Morrowind's water was mindblowing at the time. And then it started to rain... zomg.

Yeah, combat is my biggest disappointment from the video. The world looks amazing, magic looks awesome, levelling/skill trees look super interesting...and combat looks completely brainless and awkward.

Honestly it killed a lot of my hype and cemented the feeling that this is just Oblivion with better graphics. Combat was that game's biggest shortcoming and it hasn't been fixed.

I played Oblivion for 200+ hours. You're full of shit.

Yes, the architecture varied slightly from town to town (with a few exceptions being sufficiently varied), but apart from the snowy areas in Bruma, the geography/vegetation/climate/natural features across the entire map were way too similar. It was either forest or meadow.

Nehrim (Oblivion total conversion) got it right. TONS of very distinct variety across the landscape.

Morrowind's water was freaking amazing at launch. Best water there was.

Oblivion's water was good but not great, much better with .ini tweaks even on launch day.

Late to seeing this, but I've seen just about all I need to, and all I can bear. The UI is wonderful, and the constellation perk trees gorgeous. The leap over Oblivion in terms art, animation, spell effects and UI is enormous.

All I want more information on is the stealth/crime systems.

Your Oblivion fanboy gimmick is starting to get old.
What? I've posted twice in this thread and got banned once for defending Bethesda's games. I love me some good looking water in games, skyrim's looks pretty good.

As Skyrim is a Bethesda game, it will have it's share of flaws... but regardless, it will be the game of the year for me. It's the atmosphere The Elder Scrolls have, they feel real and... well, maybe magical could be the right word.
Fallout 3 is not as real (no farms anywhere?) but it has great atmosphere as well. I think i feared the ruined city a bit, it felt so hopeless and dead.

The crowd's reactions are a bit annoying but then i'd probably be as impressed (though i wouldn't show it really) as they are. Can't help it.
Good stuff. The music is a tad hard to hear but it sounds magnificent, once again.
Oh and the menus look great. Hopefully the controls are good as well, Oblivion had some minor issues...

EDIT, about the horse: someone shouted "Where's its armor?" :D
Eh, some sliding issues, the horse is too slow (just like in Oblivion...)oh well, i like running around better anyway. Beatiful world once again.

I'm probably not even going to get this game, yet I'm loving the demo.....I've never played an Elder Scrolls either. Maybe this will change my mind....

man game looks awesome but its going to be hard for me to go back to the low stardards of WRPG combat again after playing so much witcher 2.

You should get it. I am sure you will enjoy it.

If you like this types of Genre's Elder Scroll games are excellent at executing them.

I'm pretty sure it was played on a 360.
Correct. Hell, he even said it right at the beginning (albeit to a huge amount of BOOOOOs) that it was the 360 version.

Can't wait to see it running on PC that's for sure. I'm hoping it'll be well optimized, considering how nice it looks on the 360, that i'm expecting it to achieve an even higher greatness on PC and on mid-high range hardware.

Does anyone know if we have any info on the rig's spec used to demo this? single gtx 580?

Todd Howard mentions it was played on a 360 to a jeering crowd, which was a response he said he expected from a QuakeCon crowd.

It looks like I might be able to stomach the game a bit more as a mage, as the depth there combined with the shouts looked quite a bit better than what was available in Oblivion. Typical combat still remains dreadful however...and despite the fantastic size of the environment and the upgrade in visuals the world is going to continue to feel empty without companions and dialogue ALA Witcher 2/Mass Effect.

Color me impressed. can't wait to see it running on PC as it looks really great on consoles.

Its the reason threads are now made celebrating features like dedicated servers and changeable fov. People's expectations have declined a lot this generation.

What I'm really concerned about is the PS3 version as that's probably going to be Bethesda's weakest offering.

They probably got another studio to develop the PS3 version again like they did with Oblivion and Fallout 3.

But the studio they got to do oblivion did a great job!

I guess that studio was busy when fallout came around

I can see this.

Bethesda has a knack to do this for PS3. I think they are thinking that this is a good offering for PS3.

I share this man fears.

But hope keeps me alive.

I'm hoping Bethesda's new engine updates will be better suited for the PS3. But Fallout 3's problem were the terrible glitches that the game had only on that system, from what I hear, it's because they didn't even start porting until April '08.

After watching it, I just dont see how the finishing moves can feel like they have a pretty decent impact (boot to face and so on) yet the normal melee combat when the weapon makes content seem so...light by comparison?

I can deal with exploring a large world solo, as long as there are lots of unique places to explore...and that those places are actually worthwhile.

I'm loving the water so far. I gee'd when I saw the individual fishes swimming up-river. The water in the caves looked amazing as well. I remember reading that you can follow the flow of water in caves to things like exits. It's so awesome :)

I don't know about you but I had little problem with Oblivion in the near-400 hours I've spent with it (without mods even). I'm not going to slam a game I enjoyed so much because someone managed to make it look better years later irrespective of system resources. It's fucking sad that so many PC gamers love shitting on things in hindsight.
