4870 X2 can't get audio HDMI

I removed all drivers, Installed the latest ccc 8.9 and installed realtek R2.04 drivers and nothing. I used the adapter that came with the card for hdmi and nothing. I wanted to connect it to my Onkyo HT-S7100 home theater I just bought but can't even get audio connected to the tv. WTF please help
 
The port on the back of that card is a DVI correct? That can't transmit audio like HDMI can, even with the adapter. You need a separate audio cable.

not true.

Vista can't output audio to more than one device at time, you have to manually select the device that correspond to the video card in control panel -> sound. first thing that comes to my mind.

Actually, it can, but it's going to be stereo only. Switch your audio in sound properties to use the Realtek HD Audio device.

My solution for this is to run video only through HDMI and audio through SPIDF. Yes, it's another cable, and yes, I can't get anything better than 5.1 compressed, but it's good enough for downloadable stuff.

its not a normal DVI output far as i know, with ATI's adapter its supposed to output 7.1DD

actually the 4xx0 series should be able to output LPCM 7.1 over DVI/HDMI

ATI adapter it not really needed, a DVI->HDMI cable would do the same.
difference between DVI and HDMI is really just the shape of the connector on these cards (and the fact you can output VGA over DVI-I)

yes but it works in a quite different way.

on ati cards the video card has an audio device on board. you need to install drivers for it and you can output audio over DVI/HDMI through it.

with an nvidia card you have to connect the spdif out on your audio card (or motherboard if you're using the onboard audio) to the video card with a small cable that should come with the video card. of course it supports only audio signals that can be passed over spdif (compressed 5.1 at best).
not all nvidia cards have this connector tho, usually cards that follow nvidia's reference design do but it's up to the manufacturer.

it should be a 2 pin connector, if the card has a plastic shield all around it can be under a rubber lid.

Does that then becomes my primary audio hardware? Where do I find these drivers?
 
I have a similar question. If I want to connect a HDTV to my 4870, with a hdmi to dvi cable, as a second monitor will it receive audio as well or just video. I guess I should have figured this out before I ordered the cable.
 
Um the HDMI divice at the top of the picture should be the one enabled and set to default. The other one is realtek, not ATI and must be part of the onboard audio. At least thats the way it works on my comp. I dont have the realtek HDMI divice just he first one and it works fine.
 
I can confirm 5.1 can be outputted over hdmi from a 4850 and a 4870 X2. I am running a hdmi cable to my onkyo for couch gaming and it works a treat. :D
 
Mine says ATI HDMI Audio Working... and I have a 4870, outputting to a Pioneer 1018.. works great, and I get 7.1 sound under Vista.

I had this problem with 3750 and it took forever to figure out the problem. I can't remember all the steps I had to take but in the end it was some where along the line of disable one set of the High Definition Audio drivers and leaving just the Realtek HDMI one active. Then enable DTS and such on that device. Lastly, when I was testing videos, if you are using media classic, pay attention to what audio renderer it is using. It's possible that ccc didn't configure things correctly. (That took about 3 days for me to figure out.) And I had to modify the setting manually. Also, sometimes, when I play the video, I have to pause and continue for the receiver to click. (I have an onkyo 605.)

Wish I remember everything I had to do to get it working... but good luck...

No, that is correct - the Realtek drivers for ATI HDMI audio enable multichannel surround. I have it working on my setup (Vista 64, 4850x2CF to an HDMI switchbox to a Denon 987 receiver and a Panasonic projector) and if you install the Realtek HDMI drivers (as the OP said he did) it should come up correctly.

Although it's interesting - I no longer have the ATI HDMI device when the Realtek drivers are installed. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? Maybe it helps if you make sure your HDMI receiver is on while you are installing the drivers and/or playing with the sound options?
 
My EVGA 8800gtx doesn't look like it has spdif connector on it. Is there any other way to get sound to my TV without using a separate speaker cable from sound card to TV?
