[5/14] 3DS Firmware Update (4.1.0-8U)

And the update just downloaded all by itself. First time the console has done that [I have always done manual checking/update]

So this doesn't fix Maka Wuhu? Did it add folders or anything cool like that?

It might be a security update. You know, quietly plugging exploits and such before hackers catch wind of them and bust the system wide open.

The version bump from 4.0.0-x to 4.1.0-y suggests its 'a tad' more than some parental control bypass.

I bet 5 tugriks it's mainly a security update.

Mario Kart 7 patch is up on the eShop now. Looks like it was indeed a pre-patch update.

Does a Mod want to change the thread title or does someone who actually owns the game want to make another thread?

Edit: Blah, created a new thread myself.

I just added the new info in the OP and linked to your thread too :)

Seems kind of stupid to allow kids to update the system. Maybe I don't want my kids to do that without me knowing? It's not like they can buy stuff from the eshop with their non-existant credit cards anyway, which is probably the only thing that needs the latest firmware right? Or what if they turn off the system in the middle of the update? They're kids, they don't know better.

(I don't have kids, just hypothetical)

Hey kids are more tech Davy than most adults, probably less chance of them fucking it up

Being able to put folders in folders would have been a nice addition. Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait to the next update :P

Nintendo, I suspect, are suffering from the same delusion as many other hardware manufacturers in as much as they feel they still partly own your 3DS. I guess they just don't WANT people to be running older firmwares - maybe to better be able to squash flashcards, I dunno. It is risky though - I could see a frustrated kid doing a hard shutdown on an updating 3DS, I hope their fallback mechanisms are sound!

A more benign interpretation might be they don't want to lock kids out of playing if their tech-savvy parent isn't around!

Kids have been used to messages telling them not to switch off while saves are written, I'm sure they can (for the most part) take notice of a message saying the system is updating

And if they can't read? ;-)
Not being obtuse, my 5 year-olds have 3DSes and the inability to read has not hampered their enjoyment of many games. It did lead to tears before bedtime once though when they deleted my Ridge Racer save. (My tears!)

Thing is though that the update seems to happen after the 3DS reboots. It takes quite a long time to boot it up after it reboots from a system update. Like 20 seconds or so. And then there's no such message, only black screens. I don't know if it would break or simply try again the next time if you turned it off at that point because I haven't tried. But I wouldn't want to try it either.

That's where you and I differ, I wouldnt give someone that couldn't read unsupervised access to something so high tech

You might think that, but they LOVE them. Like seriously LOVE them. They play Streetpass quest everyday, send Swapnotes to each other, beat SM3DL (including special levels), starred all races in MK7... Reading ability or no, this device is perfect for young children. Really made me appreciate Nintendo's genius at designing something with such universal appeal.

My 5 year old son wants a 3ds I have told him he can have one when he's 6 though even then I wouldn't let him use it unsupervised until he could read reasonably OK and understood how to treat it properly

Oh and I hardly ever let him touch mine

I probably wouldn't have considered getting them ones when they are so young, but they kept borrowing mine! You don't really need to actively supervise them as it's pretty much a walled garden, just set the parental controls and they can't even start adult games (I had to do this when they figured out how to download Resi demo off the e-shop, LOL).

Now they are eyeing up my Vita, but there I draw the line ;-)

It's funny, when I was a kid parents gave kids video games so they wouldn't have to supervise them all the time (granted, maybe not the best parents :P). But nowadays you wouldn't want to give something like that to a kid unsupervised because they might just break it. I got a Game Boy as a kid so I would shut the fuck up in the car. I miss when handhelds were built to withstand anything.
