Her insistence to sit on the front of the bike to have a better look at flying kites proved fatal for a five-year-old girl. The kid was killed after her throat got slit by a sharp string on Tuesday. The manja had even teared up her inner clothes up to the neck. According to the police, the girl, Chanchal, along with her father Pramod Kishor, her mother and younger brother was going to meet some relatives. "The family was on their way from their house near Barkat Nagar to Mahesh Nagar when the manjha cut her throat on Tonk Road," said a police officer. The girl started bleeding profusely and was rushed to SMS hospital by her father who also got some injuries on the wrist while taking off the manjha. "Her carotid vessels were badly injured. She was brought dead at the hospital. Prima facie it appears that the cutting of the carotid vessels and profuse bleeding are the main reasons for her death," said Ajit Singh, additional superintendent of SMS hospital.

"She insisted on sitting on the front seat just to see the flying kites. And the kites have proved fatal. I could have passed her on to her mother sitting as pillion," said her father. "It was so lethal that even her inner clothes upto her neck also got cut. One cannot see the manjha passing through the area while driving," the father said. Both the parents were inconsolable at the hospital and were cursing the tradition of flying kites. "Hum to raaji khushi jaa rahe they manjhe ne beti ki jaan le li (We were happily going when manjha took the life of my daughter)," said the father while wiping off tears.

The city police though had claimed to have run a campaign against the Chinese and metal manjha, but were not seen taking stringent measures to curb it. Many birds were also injured and were rescued by bird lovers. At least 50 persons were admitted to SMS hospital who mainly got injuries on their neck, ears and nose while driving motorbike and scooters. "Out of these some of them were discharged after first aid while a few of them were undergoing treatment as their injuries were grave," said a senior doctor at SMS hospital.

Two more killed in kite-flying incidents A boy living as nomad with his family under Jagatpura flyover was killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle while he was chasing a snapped kite. According to the police, the boy, Naria(10) was seen chasing kites. "While chasing a snapped kite falling on the road, a rashly driven vehicle hit the boy. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead," said a police officer. In an another accident, a youth riding bike lost control over the wheels near Chandra Mahal Garden in Kanota when manjha got stuck on his body. "The youth, identified as Trilok Singh(25), lost control and the bike rammed a road divider, killing him. Another person riding pillion on his bike sustained injuries.

Should be noted that these kite strings are apparently made of metal.

That is absolutely terrible. How fast was the bike going anyway?

The thread title could have been worded a bit...less gruesome.

Urgh, what a horrible way to die. Consolations to the family.

Also, am I right in reading the kites have glass coating the string? That does not sound safe at all, as this shows. What's wrong with normal string?

The thread/rope used to fly these kites in the January season are usually coated in stuff like egg shell pieces, glass shards/dust, metal shavings, etc.

You are supposed to maneuver your kite and cut the "opponent's" kite free. So people use threads coated with varying sharp materials.

this is fucked. the same thing happened to me as a kid, only the string went across my mouth. I still have a very faint scar 25 years later.

Good lord.

Well that sounds like the dumbest thing ever.

Tying sharp objects to a thin and difficult to see string that's going to get whipped around real fast by the wind while people look on seems.....

Unwise.

I remember they used crushed glass shards on the wire before. There is this national kite flying day once a year. People hold community kite downing competitions just for fun and games

Yeah, the whole thing sounds unsafe for anyone, let alone a five year old.

I have two girls that turn 5 tomorrow, coincidentally. Gonna go give them a hug.

Thats just terrible.
Is this kite thing really is dangerous. My father tells me how deadly it was in the park when he grew up in Pakistan.

horrifying.

I keep trying to look up images of the strings used for such kites, but nothing really comes up, other than seemingly normal string in spools. Are you telling me that shit can slice you up?

Kite flying has been banned in Pakistan for this reason as every Kite flying seasons dozens of people died. A majority of them were going on their bicycles and the floating wire taught entangled with the free would cut them up.

The original kite strings in the 80s and 90s were very hard strings for flying. The rise in competition raised the stakes.

First came the new strings which were hard strings coated with very very small shards of glass, perfect for cutting a string

Then came the wires which had a thin metal wire with the glass shards curled up in the line to make the strikes very hard to break unless its competing against another metal wire kite string.

It can. Search for the keywords 'manja' and 'kite'. They also harm a lot of birds every year. I remember the Indian government had programs to raise awareness about the dangers but people relapse into the habit every few years.

What the hell? What a dumb game.

holy shit who knew Kite flying was such serious business @_o

Why is there kite battles anyway? A slightly stronger string in the winter/wind I could see, but kite-battles where you're trying to cut the other persons string? What?

Kite Battle is bragging rights in Sub Continent. Its not just flying. There is a specific technique that you apply flying these kites to cut the competitors kite. Its a combination of hand vibrations, waves and tugging. all of these make a wave and roll effect which allows the string to slide along the other string surface and cut it.

The kite competition could be against any Kite which got entangled. It could be two random folks but the identifier was the design of the kites which would tell you which one was yours and which one was there.

One popular way to start a battle is to identify a kite, eye the string and fly your kite at high speed towards the other kite's string while loosening the string, this would results in a high velocity impact while the string is rapidly moving up, creating a sliding effect and cut the opponents string.

Strings got too dangerous and a lot of cut and bleeding fingers at the end of the day.

Have you people not read The Kite Runner?

It's a huge cultural event.
Some variants allow you to go after and claim kites that have fallen as your own.

Open world PvP intimidates me. I only fly kites on care bear continents.

Stories like this are proof that there is no God and the universe is harsh, cold, dead, and uncaring about the affairs of mankind.

I quit after I moved to Canada from Pakistan. the metal strings came after I moved. I started flying kites at age 10. lots of fun and bruised fingers.

Is Kite Battling even allowed with those sorts of strings in Canada or the US? I've never heard of it before this topic. Funny thing is I did watch Kite Runner the movie, but it never registered with me about these dangerous strings. Must have not been paying attention or something.

I tried to fly a kite a few times as a boy but usually it ended up with me huffing and puffing all dramatically down a hill whilst my kite pathetically whimpered to the ground. :P
