653,000+ DS sold last week in US

HOLY SHIT THE ZELDA DS IS REAL?! MINE!!!! (How the hell did I miss this little tidbit of news!)

So much for my dreams of the Wii and DS selling more in the UK than in the US @_@ Wow, just wow!

Yep, a gold colored DS with the Triforce logo on it.

Too bad you didn't buy it over Black Friday weeked. Target had a deal where you could get a $10 gift card for buying the Zelda DS bundle or the Nintendogs pink DS bundle.

OK, that's pretty insane... I wonder what Nintendo is doing with the money they accumulate.

Where's my Pikmin 3 and new mascot IPs dammit?!

I'm wondering if the 2007 worldwide YTD will finish above the 2006 worldwide YTD. Possible?

Wouldn't it be impossible for it NOT to? If even just 1 DS was sold, the LTD would be higher. I think you meant YTD (LTD means all DS sales from launch up until that point, YTD means just that year).

At least it's better than 65% of the gaming population not knowing how to spell "caliber."

And both are way better than practically everybody on the entire Internet spelling "a lot" as one word.

Oh wait, Iam Canadian snuck that one in before me, the cheeky rapscallion.

Oops.. fixed

That's a given imo. Europes and NA's YTD will be much higher in 2007, which will more than compensate the lower YTD in Japan.

Probably the worst possible thing they could do with all that money is expand their dev studios really quickly in order to push out more big title games. The overlords can only oversee so much at once, surely?

I hope they use all their profits to research and design a virtual reality console that doesn't suck balls. I suspect the next ninty handheld will be virtual boy 2, except this time it will actually be great.

And their next home console will simply be a wii 2, with greater motion precision and flexibility, better graphics and backwards compatibility with the original wii and everything else that came before.

Perhaps they will call it the revolution this time, and it will come with it's own holographic screen and it will utilize inter-dimensional flux energy as a power source.

It will also come with a positronic front-end intelligence that will run your life for you.

As a business major, I got to appreciate Nintendo's strategy. Completely crazy, but boy did it pay off...

So, we saw some great Japanese games announcements (MH3, Fragile, King Story...), when will we see major western games announcements? I'd love to get an exclusive Tom Clancy FPS along with Red Steel 2, and a GTA compilation. I only played the 2d GTAs on the PC, I'd like to try a 3d one. Now that reminds me... We need a 2d GTA for the Wii!
Wanna explain all the things Nintendo is doing from a business major perspective?

And the 1 million US Dollar question is:

Can't answer A without knowing what the base number was...if you're selling 600k a week, of course you'd choose a 300% increase of that! ;)

This can't be real.

Is there any other product whatsoever that has managed to sell a unit per second in an entire week?

Globally the iPod sold 31,536,000 (counting all models) units in 2005, which comes out to .9855 iPods sold per second, over the course of an entire year... but, in the U.S. alone, I have no idea if anything has kept up this rate for a single week, although it's likely the iPod managed it at some point during the various holiday seasons it has seen.

Regardless, the DS is a beast of a product, videogame market or otherwise.

And that's still better than people confusing "worse" with "worst" or "lose" with "loose".
Actually I rarely see people getting them right anymore.

"Could of" and "suppose to" get on my nerves. Like, crazy "if I had an axe you'd be out one head right now" get on my nerves.

Coca Cola sell 1.4 billion drinks per day. (I think).

But the DS has seen a scarcity of 2D sprite-based games. Almost everyone pushes for 3D on it, with a handful of exceptions amongst its prominent, quality/noteworthy games.

Unfortunately, many DS games are indeed 3D, but I think that the DS still has more 2D, sprite-based games than the PSP. The more powerful the handhelds get, the fewer 2D games we'll see. And that makes me very sad.

"lose" with "loose".

That's easily one of the most aggravating grammatical maladies that I see. I see it all too often.

So heres what we SUPPOSEDLY know.

November NPD numbers for Wii

Week 1 : ????? OVER 100K
Week 2 : 300k
Week 3 : 350k
Week 4 : ????? OVER 100K

Total that we know of 650K

Obviously week 1 is less than week 2 and we dont know by how much. It only needs another 350k to break 1 million for november. Obviously it matters a lot though when shipments came in the last week and how much week 1 got though.

Adjust your predictions accordingly!

I know its over 100k cause that has been around the average for Nintendo on a weekly basis. That brings Wii to over 850k in November. Holy Crap!

DS will have to be the same. I bet they sold close to 1.5mil in November.

DECEMBER IS GOING TO BE THE END OF THE WORLD.

That's all fine and dandy chap, but in the end that doesn't do shit for me. Those casuals buying Brain Training and little girls buying Nintendogs and Hamsterz aren't going to get another Advance Wars made if you catch my drift. And that's all I care about.

The good thing about this is that the DS really is brining gaming out of the ghetto. I don't have to feel awkward playing on one in public nowadays.

Aye, mate. nobody even gives me a second look when I play it during lunch at my desk. I have inspired people to buy it actually. now if I could just fucking find a copy of Etrian somewhere my christmas dreams will come true

as a marketing major, this is even more interesting to me. I've spoken with a few teachers about it and they're all amazed at what nintendo's done so far.

I expect that part of the reason for the huge numbers has to do with multiple DS systems per household. Most gaming households have only a single console system, or perhaps multiple systems with only one per type (I.E. a PS3 and a Wii). But as a portable, personal device, many people want their own DS so each family member may have one.

As of Black Friday there are four in my house, with a spread of 3 causal gamers to 1 hardcore. Yes, there are a lot of causal games coming out to appeal to that demographic, but the huge installed base keeps me optimistic that a broad spectrum of game developers will increasingly target the platform. Atlus, Square and others are certainly doing their part.

i just got my zelda ds last night finally. I upgraded from the old fatty mario kart ds bundle. God what a difference. And the dpad seems to be a bit stiffer from what my friends black ds lite is.

Western devs and publishers are still failing on the DS. I'm most impressed with EA's efforts (surprisingly). They still put out their yearly upgraded NFS and Madden titles but they've also published niche titles that appeal to me.

I also remember the endless graphic jokes. PSP has way better graphics, and it's slicker, therefore it wins, right? IMO, the only reason PSP can actually stand against Nintendo is because they have the backing of the over 100 million PS2 audience. If they didn't have that, PSP would've gone the way of all the other failed handhelds.

PSP has good games though, and you can do alot of stuff with that slicker psp. Brand name only takes you so far.

After a failed console, Nintendo chose to release a console:
-with similar hardware (not allowing a graphics leap, unlike every other console ever)
-focusing on a completely different controller, and making it a standard
-with advertising showing people playing instead of the actual games
-targeting people that never played video games in their lives, or haven't played for a long time

From a marketing viewpoint, everything went flawlessly.

And they have the balls to sell the console at a profit instead of subsidizing it from the beginning. This is a great case study, and I think we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. I don't know yet if the Wii will be a success to hardcore gamers (I think it will), but the casual crowd could make Wii a DS-like success. I expect Wiis to be sold 15 years from now as "virtual bowling and tennis machine" for 50 bucks.

Exactly.
This is iPod like success, but without the competition Apple has in the digital music players market. Every company can make an iPod clone, and eventually someone will do it better than Apple, but it's not easy to make a Wii clone (you only get about 3 consoles every generation for a reason).

I think he meant sales, not shipments. Nintendo fiscal reports was shipping numbers. I have no doubt that they have sold more than 50 million now since the DS has been selling nonstop worldwide (even in Japan where it's slowed down a little but is still kicking ass).
Yes, I am aware of that. But that's all we have. And it already past that number in actual sales regardless.

Yeah, it still gets me. How the fuck is it possible that after nearly 3 years of this level of succes worldwide that western developer still don't give a crap. More than 50 million users with low develop cost and little western competition seems like a great oppertunity to me? Thankfully Japanese developers put a lot of great titles on DS so it's not that bad but still. I really hope western developers get their act together asap. Same goes for Wii (with the quality of their games).

There are notable exceptions. Majesco, EA, Firaxis, id (now id Mobile). Gamecock, BioWare, Traveler's Tales are put out or publish some great stuff. I'm still amazed Majesco's Age of Empire is my favorite strategy game on my DS.

There were some false starts in 2006 with a lot of PC devs who have seen their franchises displaced by FPS games looking at the DS as a possible platform for their games. A lot of noise were made but very little came of it. This is probably the start of a new phase for the DS, the amount of storied PC franchises headed to the DS is going to be very nice.

The europeans already got Anno and The Settlers franchises. We got Sim City, Orcs & Elves. Next year will see Populus, more id mobile titles, Spore, Civilization IV Revolutions, Myst (maybe?) and I'm sure im missing quite a few more.

The titles on my wishlist that hasn't made it to the DS are Masters of Orion, StarCraft / WarCraft and an all new Sim City game.

I like id software initiative with id mobile, hopefully other big companies will follow.

btw, there's a good bunch of French point and click games coming to the DS.

Yeah I know there are some (great) exceptions, but still nowhere near what it should be or could be. Anno is great on DS. I heard The Settlers isn't good at all though, which is a real shame. Runaway II DS has my interest. BioWare is making that Sonic RPG iirc, should be very interesting. Maybe they'll release other DS titles now as well thanks to EA. Speaking of which; EA is doing a pretty good job lately on DS, I agree. And Myst DS was confirmed some time ago btw.

so when are the monthly numbers coming out? first time i've been interested in seeing the npds for quite a while
