70% of DC Universe Online users on PlayStation 3

Thing is, none of the current gen consoles offer a suitable technical environment for developing MMO's. PSN is the most open of them all, but you still need to work intensivelly with Sony to make it happen (aka: your game must be a "big deal"). Live is a joke: all of Microsoft's rules are designed against MMOs.

For MMOs to exist on console as they do on PCs, the platform must enable developers to deploy updates whenever they need in a timely manner. This probably means getting rid of platform-holder QA/approval of patches as well as allowing said patches to be delivered via the system's built-in download system (to avoid custom in-game updaters).

It remains to be seen if next-gen consoles (Wii U included) will offer such flexibility.
Yeah. This will be the biggest misstep of next gen if it's not taken in to account. The MMO/F2P space would already be here on consoles in full swing if not for these restrictions.

I sure hope the PS3 version magically contains a good game in the download file, because I certainly couldn't find much of a game in the PC version.

I do agree with whoever said the console market is in need of a strong MMO or two. If DC Online can make some headway? ANYTHING CAN. Get something of quality on the next gen of consoles and rake in some cash.

While I can see how people would be pissed when paying a sub for this game, I found it quite enjoyable as a f2p

Yeah I jump on every now and then, it's a fun little city of heroes type game. Wouldn't pay for it though.

There's so going to be a lot of "pc users have better taste confirmed" jokes in this thread.

Good for SOE, I guess? Then again, how many people are still playing DCUO? 70% of nothing is still nothing after all...

There are lots of people playing DCUO on PS3. The server population always say "high". It's a really good community.

That's because there are tons of better choices on pc.

How many good action based super hero games are on the PC? DCUO is a damn fun game no matter what platform you are on. I spent a good six week playing daily without spending a dime. It scratches the Crackdown itch, but with more depth and a bigger more interesting city.

The game is fun if you're into superhero stuff. I've tried it on PS3 and PC not much is different except resolution, people should give it a shot, just leave the download on overnight. The environments are really nice and it's worth it just to fly around (huge Superman fan and am obsessed with flying). There aren't many games (if any?) that allow you to do that in such large seamless worlds.

Yeah... unfortunately, that is correct. I just got the game again so I could tote around with the awesome travel powers (much better than Champions in this regard) and it feels like a console game. I played it when it first launched too, so I was a bit saddened by the lack of progress in making it feel like a PC game. The ability to select someone standing in front of you is mind-bogglingly difficult for a PC gamer. To clarify, I don't think you can just target any random PC you happen to be leaping by. Nothing beats those travel powers, though. They feel great.

Some of the stuff in the game are really bothersome, like the weird animation on some of the clothing and the powers.

Go play much better Champions Online :P

I would gladly play it on PC if your character info was linked. Game runs and looks so much better on PC and feels less clunky that the PS3 version, but I rather not start from scratch.

Champions has awesome character creation, but that is pretty much it.

I could never get past the slow combat of City of Heroes/Champions Online.

DUCO is automatically the better game in this regard. Infact, I'mma gonna go redownload it to my PS3 now.

Ehh, I wanted to like Champions. REALLY wanted to like it. But as far as superhero MMOs go, DCUO is a much better game.

DCUO suffers from being Everquest-lite. It's barebones and the quests themselves are rather redundant and aren't intuitive. Hell, even CO doesn't feel grindy nowadays and feels more like a beat-em up. The only thing it has over CO is non-linearity (that is, choosing a side).

Yea don't agree with any of that. CO is still incredibly grindy and features pure wow like combat. CO is far more Everquest-lite and questing is just as bare bones. CO is awful in so many ways, the only fun is playing with the character creator. DCUO at least had some fun gameplay, it's main flaw being how small a game it was.

I'm shocked the steam numbers are that high. who the hell launches mmos from steam? I doubt very many.

I do. I like that the steam overlay allows me to talk to my friend (up until now we were in different areas , since i started earlier) and i make good use of the screenshot feature(i have about 40+ pics of the first two areas.

As far as dcu goes i found it ok for an mmo. The combat was good. The VO was good. The quests themselves sort of meh and it has like one instance they repeat throughout the game. Also i got to max level in about a week. But that was back in beta i don't know how it is now.

the game is...alright i like the style options, the different weapon tree's , and skill points that can be achieved with feats, reminds me of DAOC realm ranks which were far better than tons of gear sets as the only end game rewards. That said, this game is without hope, the problems it has still to this day...it doesnt look good for them being fixed, what ya see is what ya get. At its core pretty interesting game, but can be quickly .."completed" from a content standpoint.

I'm still wondering about the grindy part of CO because you can pretty much level up so fast in the game that you can reach the max level within a week. They somehow fixed a lot of the questing to be less horrible too. Besides, at least they aren't frustrating like in DCUO where you have to search for certain enemies all over a huge map, and the quests they have aren't different at all.

yeah but atleast DCUO is fun, CO is boring, dcuo does have a hint of "gameplay" involved when you consider movement options and weapon attacks. CO meh i wanted to like it but its boring plain and simple. And questmobs come with a zone marked on your compass or map that tells you the region they are in, all quests either have a gps target or search area.

That's my problem with DCUO though - it has that faux "we have gameplay" look by having shallow-looking basic attacks. Hell, as much as I knock on CO's combat at least it tries to be abundant on attacks and skillset - that it actually lets you feel like playing a hero rather than an RPG character with hero-like abilities.

And yes I know about questmobs, my frustration comes from that fact that in their attempt to be unique, they end up becoming more frustrating because as opposed to "kill x enemies" it's "kill x enemies then perform some bullshit". I even hate it in CO but at least the quests that rely on that is very minimal.

i did say a hint, and atleast if varies from weapon to weapon, hand blasters is nothing like 2H, or martial arts. While its not soul calibur, its all the skill bar mashing your power can handle, PLUS the weapon you choose on the mouse/gamepad. Besides its still an mmo, it cant be THAT damn involved im not performing a million alpha counters or soul edge unblockables just to do a raid , its nice where its at. And the game has some lore those are the hideouts and duo/alerts/ challenge etc. Most everything outdoors is clearly grind candy. But 90 percent of the game is instances even while leveling you can level doing alerts/hideouts /quest hideouts. The outdoor leveling part of the game is so fast its not worth mentioning. The enduring parts of the game are the sytle collection and customization of character, feats for skill points and augmenting your character, badge/mark farming for Pve/pvp items, and bounties/dailies for reps. And all the other activities like collection/investigations, races, etc all tie into those main things pretty well. Problem with the game is some of the ridiculous bugs that still persist, and small amt of content overall. Once you get to a certain level of raid , its countdown till all your doing is collecting marks and filling out your dream stats for your build.

I log in and play an hour or two every couple of weeks. Its fun for a quick bout of mindless brawling. I don't think it should be compared to traditional mmos like the majority of the stuff on PC. Feels more like a multiplayer beat 'em up to me.

If they're making enough money to keep it running now, why hate? Do you really need to get those jaded jollies in? Their F2P system seems one of the more fair ones from what I've experienced.

"It's a business model of the future."

This made me laugh. It's a future we've been telling you about since the generation started guys.

Plus, DCUO is a really terrible game. I guess PS3 users don't know any better.

Game was fun for a month. I don't play most game past that so it isn't a fault on the game. On topic, this sets a great precedent for us console players!

I could have swore it was 19gb or more. I just know I had to delete it in order to clear some hard drive space.

The game can be fun especially if you have a party to play with. But I remember some of the missions were tedious as thee fuck. Also I remember some server issues as well, couldn't even log on to play a few times.

I may redownload and give it another go.
It's 18GB's, so pretty much 19GB's.

See this is why the PS3 and PC versions should have been able to play with each other.
That would have fucked over the PS3 side. I wanted PS3/PC servers at launch, but once all the exploits and macros hit the PC side I was glad the servers were separate. I think the one thing that kept me playing as long as I did was how fun the PvP system was with the counter system in place and those macros would have just killed it for me.

It's actually a pretty good game. The real-time combat is probably the best ever in an MMO. The combat feels like a third-person action game not MMO combat, which is a good thing IMO.

This "consolized" talk is lame.
Yeah the combat was the best thing about the game.

I liked it for a while, but they really ripped off the initial buyers who spent $60 on the game itself plus monthly fees. It was a really expensive beta test so they could get their game in mediocre shape for the F2P phase. Then, when that phase happened, the original buyers got nothing.

There was no benefit to having been an original purchaser and subscriber. So if you put $100+ into the game already, you were treated as if you were just the same as a person who downloaded the game for free and bought $5 worth of stuff in the marketplace.
It got much worse for subscribers after the F2P launch. They made PvE tier suit progression slower and added reset badges you bought with real cash that would reset the lockouts before their normal time. So now instead of everyone having to wait X amount of months to unlock the new suits, $100 and a week of rerunning the same raid got you the suit before people who weren't willing to pay for it did. Then the Exec Producer got changed and with the new guy came a lot of new combat mechanics no one was asking for (immunity during combat, revamp of blocking so it wasn't instantaneous to "fix" spam blocking that was occurring cause of immunities, nerfing crits in PvP instances to drag out matches). Recently to extend the life of their cash crop, the reset badges, they introduced the new PvP DLC and added weekly lockouts to it so they could sucker another $100 out of people for a new tier suit. That was the last straw for me and I just cancelled my sub after that.

I play DCUO on PS3 every now and again. I get the updates and thats about all the money Ive put into it.

Compared to the other superhero MMOs the leveling in DC is awful. Its boring and anemic and even though it has constant voice overs has very little lore or story.

DC has something of an endgame but getting there is generally a chore. Ive gotten 1 character to level 30 and into raiding but all other characters stalled in the teens.

Champions isnt a great MMO but I enjoyed my time leveling to max level. There wasnt much to do at max level though. I did really like the instance in Vibora Bay, very nice final boss.

I'm shocked the steam numbers are that high. who the hell launches mmos from steam? I doubt very many.

The launcher thing supports resume right? It's been 3hrs and only 12% done so I'm quitting it to download when I sleep.
Yeah, it'll resume. It'll subtract what you've already downloaded from the total download size and start off at 0% next time you launch it.

After playing it on both the PC and PS3, I can definitely say the PS3 version was more enjoyable as you can tell right from Braniac's ship that the game was made with consoles in mind. I actually played that game for quite sometime until I got bored with the current endgame they had. I should get back in now that Green Lantern is out.

How is the PS3 version more enjoyable than the PC version (since both versions have controller support)?

Oh I agree Alert update broke pvp but I thought it's a nice, quicker way to level-up rush. And in CO you don't really fight overworld enemies but rather do quests.

This doesn't necessarily mean that people want Free to play, as implied in the quoted article -- if anything, people probably just want an MMO experience on a console, which is understandable, but a subscription based MMO experience is obviously considerably better than any F2P MMO type of game that needs monthly updates.

A good MMO game on a console, and not some Free to Play gimmick game, would probably make a lot of money.

By the way, I'm not necessarily commenting on the game mentioned in this thread -- I'm commenting on the nature of Free to play and online only games that don't really need to be online.

There are some exceptions of course, but I've had enough of the multiplayer only, online only, f2p stuff, and would really like some more Single Player focused games.

The only total exception I can think of is Guild Wars 1 (2 is still in Beta..), which is very odd but I don't know how they financed the development and constant support.

Yet another useless third party statistic.

I don't play DCUO, but I've tried it, it's definitely above average for a mmo, anyone whos saying its shit is a moron.

Absolute numbers worthless: absolutely

Relative numbers worttless: not at all

The sample is not random, but it does give a great relative slice of core gamers.

Twice I have tried to check this out on PS3.

Both times, I gave up.

The download must be done through the client, which means people like me with 2Mb broadband have to leave the PS3 on to download and do nothing else for 2, even 3 days.

That has ensured I will never play the game. Why the game can't be downloaded like everything else on PSN I have no idea.

There's so going to be a lot of "pc users have better taste confirmed" jokes in this thread.

I keep wanting to download and give it a shot because I'm a pretty massive Batman/DC fan...

wow...

I guess I shouldn't be shocked, but I am. I am now pretty glad I stayed away from the game.

PC player here. I actually gave up SWTOR to sub to DCUO. Found a nice league and really enjoying my time in the game. It's nothing but a token grind though, but working on the harder feats and raids is rather fun.
