I miss these :(
I remember I used to take the ones I wanted and put in on the fridge so mom knew what to get.

Wow I still remember those ads. As kid I use to salivate over them along with "Consumers" catalogs. Parents hardly bought me shit so they were pretty much like porn for me.

I remember the Christmas I got my Gamegear. I went through the eleventy hundred batteries I got within a few hours. Santa brought me a car charger for it too, so I ended up sitting in the car playing Game Gear.

I also remember the year I got my SNES and Genesis. Didn't get an N64 for Christmas, though. At least, not until a lot later. I got the Donkey Kong 64 bundle thingy.

Nostalgia blast! I don't remember these specific ads, but it sure takes me back to the days where I had less worries in life. Playing all day outside and gaming were the shit, especially with others. N64 was the local multiplayer king.

It's still so weird to me trying to imagine SNES games being 60-70 dollars back then. I was too young to buy them for myself so I had zero concept of how much my parents were blowing on them for me.

SNES games were $70?!?!?

I'm never complaining about current gen prices ever again...0_o

I'll never forget going into a KB Toys as a kid with my parents before Christmas and seeing a lady haggle with one of the employees behind the counter over an $80 copy of Shaq-Fu.

Hahaha. Yup! I remember making elaborate Christmas lists with those ads where I'd write down the item and then cut out the picture of the game from the ad and glue it on the list.

Very nostalgic looking at that.

SNES had the best lineup.

This was just before I bought a PSX. I remember looking at all systems, and all the games. Although it was FFVII which sold me, so Saturn and N64 didn't have a chance.

Beautiful.

I used to have a bunch of these ads (and a ton of old game magazines) stored in some boxes, but I lost them in storage. Sigh...

At least I still have all of my consoles and games, though, and even most of the boxes. I loved the '90s. My favorite time to play video games.

Cartridges man. It was a big part of Nintendo's falling out of favor with third party devs when they went cartridge on N64. Square bailed day one for the CD format. The profit margins were worse because it was so much more expensive to produce.

I wish I could go back and experience the PlayStation for the first time all over again.

Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot... memories :')

And up and yeah, I get a laugh out of people complaining about game prices being $60.

Yup, I paid $80 for FFIII day one...No regrets...

Same with Chrono Trigger, though it might've been on sale at Best Buy for $70, I know I got a good deal of shit for spending so much money on a game though though that game lasted me at least a 100 hours.

I literally remember showing this ad to my dad and getting an N64 with Mario that xmas. We had a Saturn at that time but Mario 64 was on a whole new level. Kind of sad to revisit Sega's desperation :(

Memories... Time marches on. It's more than just about the games when you step back and think about it.

It's moments and people and events and a time in your life that no matter what you do you'll never quite recapture it.

Yeah, that was a pretty unique retail approach. I liked it; I bought quite a few games from Toys 'R Us this way-- including Street Fighter II Turbo and Konami's NFL Football for the SNES on the same day.

The best part of the game slip approach was having the box art on flip-up cards. No live product on the floor, no gutting of games. You could see everything you'd ordinarily see by looking at the game box/case and most questions would be answered.

Toys-R-Us was always more expensive. The PSX games in particular stand out. By the time jewel cases hit, most psx titles were coming in at $39 at EB. I was buying so many games because of it.

SNES carts were always crazy. $70 SFII Turbo. $85 FFIII. I remember being hyped for Illusion of Gaia simply cause it was affordable at $40 or so. - This doesn't excuse modern prices in the least, the price of producing a cart was astronomical compared to a cd, and I'd assume the same is true with dvd/bd today.

Wow... gaming has gotten much cheaper when adjusted for inflation!

Like, ridiculously cheaper... I suddenly feel, OK with spending $150 on CE versions.

N64 games in the UK were 70 pounds brand new (no matter the game). this was at a time when the pound was double the value of the dollar.

n64 games were $140.

when the first ipod came out in the uk it was 500 pounds. yep, brits paid $1000 for the first ipod.

remember picking up my n64 at launch from toys r us and getting someone's reserved copy of Mario 64. I had the console reserved but didn't know you had to reserve the game as well. Told the person going to fetch my n64 that I had Mario too despite never giving him the reservation slip and he brought me a copy. That game was magic...

gaming was so much fun back then, now its all about circle jerking over resolutions.

n64 games were this way too. usually first/second party games were $10-$30 cheaper than 3rd party games.

Nothing hits me like old toy catalog Christmas shit. Guys, I'm already pining for Fall and Halloween, y'all wanna make me miss the holidays now too?

who remembers kb toys?

There was a one in a nearby town that sold a lot of slightly older stuff as well as more current items. Such a great place. I remember getting Vice City there as well as digimon toys. If I recall correctly they also had those Metal Gear action figures, Tenchi Muyo toys, King of the Hill figures, basically a ton of cool stuff.

I miss that store.

Dutch holiday catalogue from Intertoys (largest nation wide toy retailer), holidays 1997. Note how there's no Saturn, Sega was pretty much dead and buried around here by that time. Only a select few Electronic stores carried it.

Always funny when people complain about gaming priced today. Back in 1997 we were still paying F179,- (€81) for Donkey Kong Country 2 or 3, games for a last-gen system! Games for N64 were pretty ridiculous as well for the most part.

PSX games were mostly F130 (€59) though, so those prices were okay, even for the time.

I remember Kay Bee Toys. Aside from video games, I used to love going to it for the Hot Wheels. I was crazy about Hot Wheels cars as a kid, and Kay Bee and Toys r Us always had a full aisle full of them. Also remember when I'd go visit my grandparents and they'd take me to the outlet mall and Toy Liquidators.

Those feels.

Hardware prices were so good that season.

Right now you debate on mobile consoles, but 50 dollars is a no brainier.

Wow, that Saturn + Virtua Cop/Virtua Fighter/Daytona bundle is a god damn steal considering it was in 1996. Should've got that instead of an N64.
