It's less about Apple these days and more about preventing Facebook from getting people. I know several engineers who managed to get recruiters from Facebook and Google in a bidding war over their services and ended up with a much higher salary than expected.
i know a dude who started for apple a couple months ago and literally was scooped up and left within a month (not google or facebook fwiw)

I would move back to Knoxville if the opportunity arose. Actually, I think Oak Ridge might be a nice place to be.

If you've got a family, Oak Ridge could be better. It's cheaper than Knoxville and has one of the best public school systems in the country.

How's that sunsphere down in Knoxville these days?

There's a restaurant/bar in it now!

My 3 bedroom home cost 36,000 in Arkansas. The same home here in Michigan would be 4x that. It's all perspective really. People in NYC would pay a million+ for my view alone.

My three bedroom house in Arkansas cost about 100k and I don't even have a view. Where the hell do you live, son?!

Yes, Apple stock options are worth more.
Are you saying that based on the price of stock? Or percent rise?

Because.. you know, the amount of stock awarded is also a variable >.>

i don't think a lot of companies here do traditional options anymore. certainly part of that is attributable to apple and its backdating fun

Interesting ... I had to stay there once overnight and it was really rough (and I've lived on the south side of Chicago and in Newark). Might have just been a bad area though. And hey that guy from Jackass is from there so it's not all bad anyway.

Knoxville? "rough".. hahaha, come on man.

I might take a look at jobs at ORNL after I get out of grad school. Not sure what sort of software engineering / computer science jobs are available in the area other than there.

In some parts of rural NC a person could live very comfortably on 25,000 a year salary.
I got by on a little over $10k/year back in WV. Wouldn't call it "comfortable" but it was nice to be able to make it through school without owing a cent to anyone.

Did someone really just say you should rent instead of buy a house?!? My experience, albeit anecdotal, is that my mortgage is much less than the rent on a house of a similar size and location. Furthermore, me paying my mortgage is like depositing money into a savings account in the form of equity as opposed to just giving someone money to live at their place. The benefits are obvious and if you think otherwise you are retarded.

it was a nice way of saying ugly! i don't ever want to upset anyone!

Ah ok. Yea, downtown Knoxville and the surrounding areas are a blight. They're working on it though.

Still, generally a nice place to live.

I love living in a moderate size midwest/southern city (Louisville, KY), cost of living is cheap, I'm making less then 40k a year and have no issue buying the things I want while saving enough for a house, crime is low as well

The old city is quite nice actually.

This is what coast dwellers just can't seem to grasp when they make blanket statements about the "flyover states."

But why would anyone want to go there? There's nothing in the Old City.

Barley's has decent enough pizza and a nice beer selection. One of the better bars in the city probably.

California is basically paradise and everybody wants to live there. It's the American dream to live in CA. The high cost of living simply reflects that.

Louisville is quite a nice city, similar to Austin in terms of culture and livability.

Couldn't you live somewhere farther out from Silicon Valley and then commute? Any stats on nearby places to live that are cheaper?

Let's say you choose to commute 45 miles from Walnut Creek, a cozy suburb with a good school system, to your high-paid tech job in Santa Clara. In rush-hour traffic (which often lasts until 8 pm), this can take up to 2 hours, and there is no carpool lane over the northbound Sunol Grade, nor is there any rail or bus alternative. The median list price for a house there is still over $700,000.

Trying to find a place to live in Bay Area for cheap is horrible. Single Family homes from the 50s-80s are $3300-$4000 a month. Ancient studio apartments with no AC and poor ventilation are almost $2000 a month now. Horrible place to find any housing, and everything is ancient in comparison to the central valley.

The first part yes, the second part, no...but that's fine. Those who value lower costs of living over pretty much all else, can go elsewhere, but as a CA import, I'll pay the premium to be here than in 108 degree Austin, TX. The job market is a helluva lot better for my field to boot.

I wonder if its too late to switch my major to Computer science......

If you're eyeing the career move for the money, don't. You're guaranteed to be unhappy and make everyone else unhappy as we have to sift through your work, which will suffer if your heart's not in it. If you want money and a more accessible gig, I'm pretty sure law degrees were made just for that purpose;-)

law degrees? You can actually get a job with one of those?

I moved back to the Chicago suburbs several years back, after a few years in the Bay Area. I do miss it at times, but my standard of living is so much higher here. I make about $20k less than I did in CA, and yet am so much better off financially.

Some people are happy with what they have, but some people want more. For me I can't imagine living outside the cultural halo of the Bos-Wash corrider. I have access to pretty much every major cultural aspect of western civilization at my fingertips. Sometimes people from the midwest and south seem to think life is all about a big house, big car, and tailgating.

Stock options remain more valuable the better a stock performs. AAPL options dated 5 years ago would get you stock that has quadrupled, while GOOG dated 5 years ago would get you stock that has doubled. Yes, the price you can call at alters value, and past performance is not indicative of future gains, but AAPL options have been more valuable, all other things being equal.

You could save $42k by moving to Florida!

OMG no wonder everyone is leaving California!

Oh wait...no one will pay you 92k in Florida, meaning youll never be able to "save" that money anyway. The schools suck. Public transit sucks.

What a stupid stat.

The schools are better than Cali and only poor people take public transit.

I love living in San Fran but damn it's expensive.

Whoa, depends where o_O

My single apt in North San Jose is 1700 (i only did 8 month lease, normally 1600), and its pretty sizable by Bay Area standards. (although, maybe this is considered almost 2K?)

Pretty much the exact gross oversimplification I'd expect from a lifelong yankee. Each time I read this practiced elitism I think of that New Yorker cover of what Madison Ave sees out of the window looking at the rest of the US

yes,you can live in a 2 story house for $300 when there is no demand for your house.
have the hipsters move in,and make it party central, and your landlord will bump up your rent 3x.

What I just explained is the difference between coastal cities and inner states.

As for rent is better than owning.that is only the case if you definitely plan on bouncing around. But owning property is better.its a investment that can be sold whenever you want ,either for your money back or higher.its up to the owner.

plus owning would be better for a family.american dream does include a family to take care of.

FL has terrible public universities compared to CA.

Its not really a black/white decision as I'm sure you know, Astro... With the way the market is currently, now's not a bad time to buy, assuming you are planning on living there for awhile and not to just immediately flip...

I'm still worried we haven't reached the bottom for housing prices.
