You think he's an asshole now? Oh man, do yourself a favor and NEVER watch the Roots TV show.

eh? The US run is only up to episode 8 now but he hasn't been much of a jerk. Indifferent maybe but nowhere near the ass he was in Vol.1. Maybe he becomes a jerk later on in the series? (remember no spoilers!)

Errr, if I'm not wrong, G.U. starts with
Haseo having lost all his levels and he became a wimp again, right? So that would mean that G.U. ties right with the end of Roots, when Haseo is at the pinnacle of his assholerish behaviour. You could call his start in Root indifferent, I'd call it jerkish tho

Just wanted to bump to add comments I put in the wrong gu thread.

I finished Vol. 1 two days ago and I have to say I really enjoyed it alot more than I thought I was going to.

I've never played a RT RPG game before where you only control one of your party and actually like it, but something about this one... hell it was actually fun. So much so that I'm going to have to take a look at other RT RPG's that have similar party, computer AI set ups.

I hope that Vol. 2 and 3 are quickly announced for the US.

And finally my comments on fighting doppleganger:

So I've been hearing about how hard Doppleganger is... so just a few min ago:

So I've got Haseo at 50, Pi at 49, and Kuhn at 49, and I just cleared a level 50 map and have my morale gauge full, thinking, ok this is going to be a hard fight, he's 8 levels higher than me, has kickass stats and regen, and set my party's strategy to Rage.

So I wait... at about the 7 min mark the f*cker appears just a few feet in front of me. I'm like ok... so I go in to the fight. Immediately activate my beast awakening, pound the shit out of him with Bone Crusher and, the awakening ends, I hit him once more... he's dead....

Guess I should have fought him earlier in the game, or without beast awakening... oh well, guess I'll go build my arena ranking...

So I guess now all I can do is wander level 50 dungeons to get my characters up to 50, finish some of those character assigned quests, mech grunty, pk blacklist, lucky animals, etc.... and fight in the tournament to raise my tournament ranking.

I just hate that the level is locked at 50.

While doing my daily check for .hack news I checked up on the rarely updated US site and guess what's there now? A logo and title for Vol.2!

.hack//G.U. Vol.2: Reminisce.

Guess they wanted a short name but "A voice of you" or "A voice that reminds me of you" would've been cooler. I wonder if they'll somehow make the third volumes title start with an "R."

The Japanese version is a bit different too... he comes across as more of an asshole in the original than he does in the dub.

Mm... he gets a lot worse though.

.hack//Roots Vol.1 Limited Edition....

rootsdvd1le.jpg

....does not contain a demo for G.U. Vol.2?! Instead it is for Vol.1!? Makes sense but... not exactly what we were "promised" by the Bandai rep over at animeondvd forums. And what does this say about Reminisce's as of yet unknown release date?

rootsdvd1box.jpg
rootsdvd1.jpg

(For comparison fun here's the jp Roots 1 & box arts)

I just got GU and I did the "Convert Save" thing. I only converted Infection data since it was first on the list and it said they all did the same thing, but I don't see what extra I got.

Just to follow up on the demo "fiasco"~

jknguyen said:
Yea it's gonna come w/ Vol. 1 . Initial plans were for V.II but marketing over at NamcoBandai thought it was best to put those in the box. And since they made the demos we really didn't have much of a choice...

As to later volumes, the packins are still being decided so hopefully we can get in more demos.

Guess it couldn't be helped. ;_;

After much browser crashing. . . I got it to load! Thanks!

HM: [No, that] only came with .hack//G.U. Vol.1 Rebirth. However, if you have a clear data of .hack//G.U. Vol.2 Reminisce, players can start .hack//G.U. Vol.1 Rebirth from an advanced level, so that even those who play .hack//G.U. Vol.2 Reminisce first can take advantage of .hack//G.U. Vol.1 Rebirth. This system is called "data feedback system."

That's pretty neat! Not quite an EX mode~ but something that oughta be neat to try in future replays.

Converting from Infection should get you an e-mail from BlackRose while converting from Quarantine gets you that and also one from Hokuto or so I hear. I to converted from Infection. >_<

btw I'm really liking the Vol.2/Vol.3 OST. ^_^ Just wish I could look at the 11 wallpapers that came on the bonus disc but I fear potential spoilers to much!

Edit: The new arena music (I assume thats what it is) is FANTASTIC.

Namco Bandai's website has a mini-trailer for Reminisce focusing mostly on those two shadowy figures from the end of the next episode preview. Beware of spoilers if you haven't finished the first game.

dothackers on the other hand has the opening loop and intro available for download. I wish I hadn't watched the opening loop because I'm just a million more times hyped and confused! >_<;; But it looks like we'll finally get to see what AIDA are all about. Can't help but wonder if the last segment of that is a flashback to Roots episode 17 or........

By the way for anyone who's been following the US run of Roots, we're down to 8 episodes left! How many more surprises can they throw at us? Oh and I totally love Saburo. She's cute and funny and better show up in the games (hopefully as a party member)!!

---
In Japanese news, a book/guide/whatever called .hack//Truth is going to be released soon. Dunno what its gonna be about since I'm still avoiding spoilers like crazy but I imagine it may be something like the old .hack//Encyclopedia. Wish we got stuff like that.

There's a CC2 10th anniversary contest thingy with from what I can tell some .hack related prizes.

Still no word (from what I can tell) on a final OVA episode and whatever else is supposed to fill in the G.U. series box.

.hack//Mobile has been brought back, apparently. Have fun playing classic style .hack on the go mobile phone owners. >_<

---
Also updated some release dates and fixed some minor things in the original post.

That's even funnier than the time they ran .hack//dusk (or whatever the anime's official title was) at 1:30am Friday nights completely unannounced and unadvertised. Even better, it was TV-Y7 and still had all the creepy twincestual undertones unedited. I guess if no one is watching it, it doesn't matter! :lol

I watched it :x sometimes. The ultra slow pacing and long musical interludes made it great for late night watc-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I still have .hack//Infection which was fun for a while but then got amazingly tedious and annoying with the hour long unsave-able dungeons. I'm at the part where I can go fight the final boss...but I don't have the patience to work up to the level where I can beat it.

G.U. does look a bit better than the infection, etc. series (not to say I didn't enjoy Infection somewhat).

May? That isn't summer. But good news if true! That makes it almost certain we'll see volume 3 this year.

Bad news? Cartoon Network looks to be starting Roots from episode 1 come April 7th despite there being 5 more episodes to air. >_<

I don't know, I would prefer it in April myself because isn't May Mass Effect month? I hated feeling sort of rushed with Vol. 1 because I knew FFXII was just around the corner.

Dunno what a Mass Effect is but ever since announcing Reminisce its been "summer 2007" for release. Maybe B-N's summer quarter starts in May? Sooner the better of course!

Special Edition with series box and Atoli figure please!

Happy Easter!

Here's a bump because we're just one month (supposedly) from Vol.2! :)

It seems like price dropping is happening ala the original series as Vol.1 is going for $29.99 at EB/GS's website and $23.99 at Amazon. Not sure about in-store though. Can anyone find out if its an official pricedrop? Anyhow if you've been holding off you can now pick it up abit cheaper.

The official US website has been down for a couple of days now which means they'll soon be back with info on Reminisce. Their viral marketing site is also preparing for a comeback too.

As I mentioned before, despite there being 5 episodes left to air Cartoon Network has restarted Roots at episode one as of yesterday. So if ya missed the earlier episodes they're back on. If CN had the episodes they would have most certainly aired them. Its hard to imagine that they aren't yet dubbed. The surprise earlier release of Vol.2 and the holding back of the last episodes... just what is Bandai up to?

The first dvd was knocked back two weeks from the 3rd to 17th btw. Second volume will apparently not have a limited edition version so... will we get both Roots OST's?

First post has been updated of course.

I always wanted a box for the first four volumes (ala DDS). If the special edition of Vol2 really comes with that box, I'd get it.

Okay guys this is it! Barring some ultra huge news such as a delay this'll be my final thread bump (though I'll reply to questions/comments if need be) until release day! So of course the first post has been updated big time! :)

Reminisce is now there with a buncha info for ya to read over along with one screenshot at the moment. Rebirth also gets official info added to its section and a new screenshot to boot! I shrunk 'em down and rehosted so it would be easier on the eye and so I could squeeze in pictures for the second and third games.

Unfortunately it seems there won't be a special edition for Reminisce (due to "poor" sales of Rebirth?). However it seems that the first episode of the Roots anime will be on the game disc itself and viewable from the start or so I hear. That's a nice little bit of cross-promotion I guess. Bandai-Namco continues to drop the ball in other ways though~ such as their website not listing a page for the upcoming game even though they do have one (replace rebirth in the url with reminisce) but I'd avoid that page anyway since some of the screens could be alil spoilerish?

Anyhow be ready for May 8th (although 1up says 15th)!!

Yeah, I've played it for an hour or so. Beginning is really really slow.

I expected Lindsay to bump this thread. I'm guessing you haven't gotten your copy yet? Or maybe you're busy actually playing it.

I just got home with my copy. :) Will start playing after I finish drying off from my bath.

Mine was free of charge due to a nice someone buying it for me. So I was standing at the counter waiting for the usual "you can get 10% off the strategy guide" thing but..... they never said it. So I asked about it and the dudes looked about and then in the computer and said one hadn't been made for Vol.2. What the heck? Has the series fallen off so much it can't even get official strategy guides released same day or not at all -_-??

Oh snap! I looked on the back on the instruction book and we now know the title for Vol.3! Redemption! R, R, R.... hardee har har?

I'm trying to buy the GU games but I'm so backlogged I'm stuck on Outbreak. Plus since it's been so long since I've seen the shows the gameplay is starting to grate on me.

That was a heck of a start to the game! Early on in Roots I had theorized that
perhaps everybody in the game was actually unconcious, stuck there.
Well it didn't happen there but it did come to pass eventually if only for a "few minutes." Love the new updates to weapons! Being able to move around while charging your sword was a much needed thing. :) I don't like how the maps in fields now show your footprints its like you're being tracked. ;_;

Course I got notepad open furiously writing down various things that won't see the light of day on my site any time soon~

Outbreak is the toughest one of the classic series if ya ask me. So many data bugs in both normal and the eight or so "bonus" dungeons... @_@; Be sure to build up a nice collection of virus cores for Quarantine and be nice to my Terajima! Oh and don't forget to hunt down those "ghosts" from .hack//SIGN for many nice items!

Oh yeah! OP updated. Memory needed for Reminisce and Terminal Disc, three more pictures, and a link to Games Radar's Vol.2 review. Kinda harsh~

Just got my copy and only played about 45 minutes, but boy what an intro. I'm pretty excited to see where this one goes. It's a shame this is getting such harsh reviews, it's just as good as Vol. 1 so far.

EDIT: Ohhhh I completely forgot about my terminal disk, going to have to pop that in and check out the goodies.

Yeah I've done a few of the bonus dungeons already and I known the //SIGN charas were into the game but not as phantoms, made for a funny encounter. I have so many virus core it borders on overkill, and I've already wasted a significant amount of time doing dungeons just to level up Terajima Ryoko. I can't wait to proceed with the storyline after I finish watching a bit more of the DVD.

EDIT: It's kinda sad listening to the sweet VAs by the phantoms, then hearing a few of the games' VAs. For many of them it's night-and-day. :lol

Yeah lets try to keep it to a 3 - 4 month gap this time between games. It was nice that they had the little refresher in the beginning though. I'm glad the weekend is coming up, it's going to be me and Vol. 2 and the occasional restroom break lol.

Also, how awesome does Haseo look on the cover for Vol. 3!?

B.K. said:

It's currently secedualed for October more or less from what I've heard. Hopefully it stays on target and isn't delayed.

We're not even at 3 pages. I lol at whoever said GAF has a strong .hack underground. :lol

Right now I'm taking a break from the story to take on quests, level some and get better equipment for my team. But when I'm ready it'll be time to take on the second round of the Holy Palace tournament! Poor video quality on the Roots episode. Maybe they weren't lying about now having much space on the discs?

Alkaid is made of love and boy voice. :) Real-time weapon change isn't real-time nor what I expected but functional and pretty cool anyhow. Divine Awakening is awesome! Like a super summon spell if you don't fail at timing! Also love the new desert stages! There sure seems to be alot of "truths." I wonder if or when they'll ever get to the ones I wanna know about.

As usual card game stuff escapes me. I read all the instructions and forum posts and I still have no clue how Crimson VS works~nor do I really care which is pretty sad since the game plays itself. x_x The card art is nice so I like checking that out anyway. I editted my deck once with random cute cards and am somehow on a win streak.

Sounds good to me! Release 'em 6 months from one another oughta ensure quality or something like that. But don't mention the release date at gamefaqs though cause the .hack fans there are skeptical as hell and will flame or mock ya (and in the end always proven wrong)!

No no no no no! It isn't fair! ;_;
When I saved and saw the chapter name Disappearance of course I thought something bad would happen but not that bad! Why her??
Even the good news popping up for a couple of the minor .hackers doesn't help. ;_; ugh~ I don't think I'll be able to play anymore today.

My game clock says just over 16 hours. Either this is going to be a rushed ending or Vol.2 will be longer than Vol.1 since I had finished that in 20 hours. I have been taking my time and doing the quests and bookmarks found on the boards at the appropriate levels but seeing as how I haven't even encountered an epitaph user battle much less the winged guy and naked guy(why naked?) I'm gonna say this one will be longer.

Oh and boo one 1up for spoiling the opening.

I think they rated it a bit too high. Either way, the story is the reason I play it. But I cheat when I play this series so it makes it a little easier to deal with. But yeah.. I beat this game a couple days ago. It takes a huge chunk out of the time when you cheat obviously.

Gamespots review is in with a weak 5.7. Yet another site slamming its battle system. Am I missing something? How are battles boring >_<?

frame rate does a fair job of keeping up with the action. The cutscenes, while often too heavy handed, are at least well directed. The accompanying voice over isn't grating, though the constant anime-style shouting and growling does wear thin. The music fits the game well, but there are no stand-out tracks to be heard here.

What? They praise the framerate chugs at times? But say the music doesn't stand out? Well nuts to them!

Anyway I'm pretty sure I have to be near the ending now. About 27 hours in and more cruel heartbreak. If only they'd shown the last few Roots episodes
I would have known about and maybe been over Phyllo's death by now ;_;
. Why didn't anyone tell me there were actually TWO new field/dungeon types? The tower dungeons have simplistic maps but cool traps and atmosphere!

Did
Atoli's memories hit close to home for anybody else? Also: "I want you to look at me! No one ever looks at me!
There's definetely something strange with Saku and Bo. If its what I think it is then o.O; Oh and I suck at bike racing. I can't place near first on any of the five courses.

Does anyone know if you can unlock wallpaper/music you may have missed in Rebirth here? I've unlocked alot so far but its all been Reminsice stuffs. The guild upgrades have been pretty cool so far. I just wish I could have more inventory/storage space~well I don't even have all the Ryu books at 5 much less 6 so maybe there is still hope for storage upgrades.

1 - OP post
10 - Posts responding to others
10 - Posts talking about the games themselves
6 - Posts with news updates

So I got 27/93 posts in this thread. I honestly thought it would be more.

Anyone think I should ripoff Scarlet and do a "my summer of .hack"? I could rewatch the animes, reread the books, replay the old and new games~ @_@; Or not.

I don't think you can get the Rebirth wallpapers/music through the Ryu Books when playing Reminisce.

And yeah, I think a summer of .hack could be nice. Wouldn't want to sit through the //Legend of the Twilight anime though.

The .hack// series is certainly not for everyone. Most .hack fans don't really pay attention to the reviews.

Anyways My copy of Vol. 2 Reminisce should be here next week, can't wait :D

Well I finished up yesterday with the clock just over 31 hours. The ending was even more epic then Rebirths was! There's still alot of stuff I don't understand! But if the final episode preview is anything to go by, I kinda get where some things are going at least. I sure hope I'll get to see the end of the anime before Redemption hits.

There is still lots left to do in this game though! Anyone got tips on not sucking at bike racing? I barely managed to squeak out a win against the
One Sin
but there is still something more powerful waiting for me? Yikes! I better stock up on scrolls! Still got three more epitaph weapons to unlock so I gotta grab more of them Adler Keys!

By the way it sucks that Bandai took so much time in getting this game out and still managed an error. Who is Houka? Huh? Her name was Ouka! >_<; I guess the Legend of the Twilight manga really is the bastard child of the series since many references to it are botched on translation.

;_; Guess I'll have to replay Rebirth and Reminsce then so I can get all the wallpaper/music. And on second thought a summer of .hack may not be very interesting since it'll start with reading then watching anime before getting to the actual gaming part and I'm no good at expressing my thoughts so unless lotsa other people joined in~ >.<

Reviews can't be completely disregarded. However I kinda have to think they have something against this series. If I weren't so lazy I'd go check on reviews for other episodic console games. Have fun with the game!

Anywhere on the net where I can get the .hack Terminal disc seperate? eBay perhaps?

Good luck with that. Since it was never sold stand-alone someone would be quite odd or money grubbing to sell off the disc without the game.

No, they don't have anything against the series. You're just such a huuuuge fan that you can look past all the shortcomings.

I'm not trying to be offensive or anything because I can understand liking the .hack series enough to play the terrible games but really buying these games just lets them know that their fanbase will buy them no matter what.

They really need to look at other games or figure it out for themselves... how to make a really fun game. The ideas behind it is genius.. but it's executed very poorly. Having a PC-like system and being able to do all these things is really cool! but they just don't do it right and they didn't really offer enough content for the player either.

I wouldn't mind seeing a next gen version as long as they stop making the same mistake that most MMORPGS make which is increasing the length of the game by making you grind. The battle system is an important part of the game obviously because it's a game and it's meant to be played, well if so, maybe they should add a lot more fun to the battle system instead of attacking the enemy nonstop until you can use Rengeki and that's it.

Also they really needed to fix some of the camera issues.. the way the bike works is horrible and the map on the top left is still HUMONGOUS and you can't toggle it off can you?

I'm saying all of this as a fan of the storyline and premise. If they executed it properly like any other game company (except Sega) would then it would probably be a huge hit! I really wish I could work on the game myself to be honest but that's something that just won't happen.

Sadly this is what keeps me coming back to the .hack games even though the gameplay is average at best. The PC elements are so well done that I can't help but get engrossed in it. The forums are incredibly well done, the emails, the news feeds, it really feels like I'm connected to the internet. I really wish Cyber Connect would outsource the gameplay portions to someone like Level 5. A .hack game with great gameplay would undoubtedly be one of the greatest games of all time.

I know! It's so sad that all that potential is lost. I'm not sure if .hack is just another anime game to them or not but it sure does seem that way. Honestly, I'd happily pay for the next series (they said they're done with the .hack series though) if they did something like outsource the gameplay portions to someone who really knows how to make a fun game. Hell, they're part of Namco right now, I think maybe even some Namco teams could do it properly.

What grinding? Leveling up is as easy as taking on an area 2 or 3 levels higher then your own. Besides, since you cheated what would you know of it anyway? If you do the areas gotten from the message boards and quests inbetween story parts you should never be underleveled.

If you're refering to the fact that areas are crowded with monsters, well there is the Smoke Screen item that lets you exit battles it's also fairly easy to avoid most enemies in the first place. Unlike the original series, there is no bonus for completely clearing out areas so it isn't like you're being forced to.

The battle system is an important part of the game obviously because it's a game and it's meant to be played, well if so, maybe they should add a lot more fun to the battle system instead of attacking the enemy nonstop until you can use Rengeki and that's it.

Attack attack attack~Isn't that what you do in every RPG? Heck, every game with enemies? Skills/Scrolls (magic) are useful. Instead of hacking away did you ever use any of those? It's also frequently useful to press O to defend. Protecting your allies from spells by drawing them near with L1 adds more defensiveness to things. Bothering to customize your weapons/armor/accessories for encounters with various baddies helps alot to.

Also they really needed to fix some of the camera issues.. the way the bike works is horrible and the map on the top left is still HUMONGOUS and you can't toggle it off can you?

The map can be toggled off. Good luck finding your way around without it! Agree on the camera. I don't remember it happening in Vol.1 but in Vol.2 on more then one occasion did the camera get locked in place for several seconds before I could move it around again. Dunno whats up with that.

Spoilers for the entire series from what I think Bebpo has said. I personally will not watch any of the ones unlocked in Vol.2 (5, 8,& 9) nor the rest until finishing Vol.3.

Still doesn't change that the battle system isn't very good. It's just not a fun game to play! That's why I cheated after playing vol 1 to the near-endgame point. I just got sick of it and wanted to breeze through to see what happens after Roots.

All garbage. There's plenty of stuff they could have done to make the combat more hectic but instead they just have this really cheap thrown together battle system. Since it's more like an action RPG, they should have added more action elements. Jumping can make all the difference as well as maybe making a cooler combo system or something along those lines. The things I mentioned above are way better than mashing on one button non-stop. I think it's pretty cheap how there're flying enemies but you really don't have much control when it comes to hitting them. There's some stuff you can add to your weapon to hit the flying enemies but that's also pretty silly.

The map can be toggled off. Good luck finding your way around without it! Agree on the camera. I don't remember it happening in Vol.1 but in Vol.2 on more then one occasion did the camera get locked in place for several seconds before I could move it around again. Dunno whats up with that.

Nice to know the map can be toggled off... but I guess it'd just be nicer if they made a smaller and nicer map.

Spoilers for the entire series from what I think Bebpo has said. I personally will not watch any of the ones unlocked in Vol.2 (5, 8,& 9) nor the rest until finishing Vol.3.

I see. I had no idea about any of that. Nice to know. I guess I'll do the same.

For anyone without a conscience and that stinks at bike racing~

I just started attempting bike race course 2, and I hit select to look at the map quick, then hit X and O really quickly by accident and I FINISHED. In THREE SECONDS.

here let me go into more detail, when you press select take your left hand off the controler and put it on the x button, but don't press it, then take your right hand press circle then immedetly following press x, the description of the map should appear with no map, then just run into a king chim chim, note the king must already be visible or else it won't show up

You can finish the courses in seconds without even having to hit all three kings. I tried it myself on all five courses and it does indeed work. I didn't save my game afterwards of course.

A regular player that doesn't like the games combat? Oh well I am used to being in the minority. Do ya at least think its better then the first series? After going back to PSU from G.U. I found myself bored and I like PSU's combat (again, minority)~

It's more like an MMO (not that I have any experience in those) what with the hacking and slashing it also has to feign balance between the classes. All the buttons are taken so what would be used for jumping anyway? I'm not all that experienced in action/rpgs either but can you name some that have jumping and more deep combo systems? Zelda, Shining Force Neo, PSO/PSU all say no. I think it would be neat if the O button wasn't just for defense but also allow you to evade attacks with the right timing. As for flying enemies use your magic or aerial skills (sparrow counter, twin moons, lotus flower) and they'll be falling down to earth before long. The battle system grew with this volume and will most likely be tweaked again for the last one so maybe you'll like it by then.
