A friend's social media is nothing but Herbalife

I've noticed that a friend has been posting about Herbalife for awhile now. A year or so ago she invited me out to this exercise club she went to. I went a few times, and the whole thing was basically an Herbalife recruiting platform. I went a couple times, but never joined the program.

Fast forward a year. I realized that it's been awhile since I've seen her post anything non-Herbalife related. I went to her facebook timeline, and about 95% of the content going back as far back as I bothered to scroll is about the Herbalife program or about fitness in general, which basically alludes to the Herbalife program anyway. Maybe 1 in 20 posts is about something else. Every post has 3-6 hash tags like #active or #healthy or #rippedforsummer

All her photos have to do with the company as well. If they aren't pictures of her and the other fitness team members, they're before and after pictures of people who got fit on the program. She has hundreds upon hundreds of these. At least 10 Herbalife or fitness related photos for every one normal photo.

This kind of blew my mind, so I did more digging. Nearly everyone who she tags in a post is another Herbalife trainer. I checked out some of their profiles, and while I can't see as much, it looks to be much the same.

This shit is pretty nuts. Thinking about it, basically all of our communications over the past few years have involved her inviting me out to some Herbalife-related event.

She used to be a pretty normal girl. She's definitely very fit at this point, but it seems like this company is her entire life. What gets me is that for all the marketing she's putting it, it seems that she has a part-time job in a coffee shop on the side.

Anyone else experience anything like this?

My friend, who I'd consider to be pretty street-smart, got suckered into the whole MGM-kinda thing.

I was legitimately surprised when he got defensive after I pointed it out...

Never seen anything quite like this, but when people get involved in pyramid schemes or "multi-level marketing" as they like to call it it ends up pretty much the same.

It's crazy how quickly some people's minds absorb whatever ideologies are poured in, especially when there is a group/"community" mentality around.

I have one of these, dude cannot make a single post without tagging some herbalife shit in there somewhere. Constantly posting about whatever Herbalife shit he's drinking and making overhyped statements about how he's ready to fuck the face off of a cliff with his raging hard-on for these products.

What's sad is that he gets more response than someone like me who counts on social media to spread their work and isn't just shilling snake oil.

Had a kid in spanish class my sophomore year get into selling the stuff you would hear him mention it everyday, kinda worrying that he wasn't the only one who went so deep into it.

I have a friend who is just like this. Keeps inviting me to shake parties. She looks good though, but always did. Doesn't need this herbalife bollocks.

A girl I know from HS is big into that You It Works Wrap shit. If I wasn't so lazy I would hide it or unfriend her. That wrap shit can be disproven with 5 seconds on Google.

I have a friend who does the herblife thing. She posts about it a lot too. Maybe it's a fun thing to work for. Idk

Their pay is usually tied to how much they spam this shit.

Had a speech course in college where one kid gave all his speeches about CutCo/Vector Marketing and how he was the regional superstar and going to go to the big national meeting and other horse shit like that.

For one speech he wasn't there on the day he was supposed to give it and I said "darn, I wanted to hear more about CutCo" and everyone including the instructors laughed.

It was the greatest day of my life. This story will be the entirety of my obituary.

It's not fun, it's just a pyramid scheme that hinges on you telling everyone you know about it in a desperate attempt to dig yourself out of the hole that comes from signing up and ordering the initial crate of merchandise.

No, not at all. As the brochure describes it, it is not a pyramid, it is a triangle. And it is not a scheme, Hank, it is an opportunity.

I know people in Amway and the speaker dude flat out admitted to it being a pyramid scheme in the meeting I was taken to. Of course he went on to say ".........BUT SO IS YOUR JOB!". My cousin denies even hearing it.

I have a couple friends pushing MLM stuff on my timeline. I didn't even know what it was until every post from them seemed to be about it.

I have a coworker that does the passion party thing. She's pretty careful to keep it out of work. She's totally the wrong type of person for it, though. Pretty much one of the most negative and abrasive people I've ever met and I knew myself as a teenager
no fucking joke
.

She thinks she's friends with people and horrified one of my coworkers that I'm friends with by asking her to let her host a party for her and her friends. This woman would ruin the joy of sex for anyone, I think.

Yes, I have a friend who was into MLM stuff for a couple years, mostly Numis. She still works in sales now but has quit the MLM activity. However, she's still hyping self-help and business conferences.

Maybe my own bias is at work here, but it seems to me these groups are more intertwined with libertarian philosophy in recent years.

These pyramid sche-ahem, excuse me, multi-level-marketing companies are all about getting people underneath you in the pyramid. The promise of riches hinges on your continuous recruitment of other suckers (and their continued recruitment of suckers) in order to eke out slow drips of revenue through recruitment bonuses, in order to offset the mandatory product purchases you're forced into as part of joining. Hence the social media abuse.

One day I'll post my experience with the product pre-ephedra ban. Until then, I'll agree that the company is slimy and gross.

Got 2 on my friends list who only posts Usana and Royale related topics.
It's amusing and bizarre and they both seem to be overly excited all the time.

Lol my cousin was suckered into one of these things too. He lives with me so I had to put up with his shit. He once showed me a video explaining why my job is a pyramid scheme and not his. He would try to make fun of me by telling me his net worth in his company and how valuable he is. I would just pull out my cash or show him stuff I'd bought and he stayed quiet. He doesn't do that shit no more but he still has this fucking poster on the wall named "the millionaire mind."
it gives you a list of things to recite and do to become a millionaire.

One of my friends got into this shit too. His is Wake Up Now or some crap. I would play games with him, but he started bringing his crap up. Just 5 days ago he kept on bugging me and I told him to stop, but he didn't and he asked me if I had seen the videos he posts on Instagram. And I was like I have bro, it's just that it's your "mentors" making money and not you. I haven't seen him post anything of himself making money or shit. He quit the game right after and he hasn't talked to me since.

Yep. There's a dude I know that posts almost nothing but Wake Up Now crap all day. I haven't unfriended him yet because I want to see how long it's going to take for him to crack and quit :P

lol that's the shit my friend posts.

I don't think its bad thing to be passionate about your work to the point it is your life.

I hope I one day work in an organization that I feel happy enough to integrate them into my personal life.

I think people are way too hard on Pyramid schemes and the people involved. Not to mention we've started to assume every organization that operates on a pyramid scheme is a scam which isn't really the case.

Some people just like being a part of something.

fake edit:

I've worked two sales jobs in a pyramid scheme structure. The pyramid structure obviously works to an extent but the amount of work you have to put in to get to a decent level is just not worth it. Then you have to worry about the performance of the people working for you which involves motivational speech talks about the whole "pyramid scheme" which then looks ultra scammy but really, that guy is just ensuring his pockets get filled.

I think some people just have an issue with having a version of 'slaves'.

Back when I used to work at a bookstore, I had a pretty girl come up to me and shoot the shit for a bit. She then invited me to a meeting at 8:30 at night out in a place at least an hours drive from where I was working. I figured it was a scam so I told her I would come but of course didn't show up. The next time she showed up at the bookstore I apologized for not coming and straight up told her the only reason I even said I would was because I wanted to go out with her. She rejected me. Life went on.

She had the greatest tits... what a shame.

Hmm...

One of my friends kept on hounding me for this MLM stuff, so I had to deactivate my Facebook and watch over my cell phone. That stuff is serious business, they will go to the ends of the earth to sell me stuff I don't need.

Screw you legal pyramid schemes.

My old stepsister works for Herbalife. My sister admitted they were a scam after I guessed that they were, and told me she worked for them for a year and hadn't even been paid yet.

I was looking for a screenshot from Welcome to the N.H.K. during the episode relating to this topic, but I couldn't find one, so have this instead.

Yeah dude and I quit after the first week..

It was commission based and I was 18. I witnessed the promotion of the pyramid; work your way up to owning your own business in a year etc etc bullshit etc

I couldn't get the pyramid working for me cause I don't have it in me to persuade others to work shitty jobs or buy shitty products so I make a quick buck but I can see how someone with the sales and communications skills/talent can make this sort of thing work.

Its foolish to think it doesn't work. If it didn't work, it wouldn't exist. The people who really succeed in getting it going are all self-centred people. I doubt I need to explain why that is.

fake edit:

Heres the company I worked for and heres the details of their pyramid:

http://stminternational.com.au/careerprogression.asp

Its funny, if you check the home page and their "2 year Game Plan". That 2 year game plan has been up there since the last time I saw it in 2009. I guess its going well.

I was out at petrol stations trying to sell this shit:

at 40 AUD a pop!

My facebook feed is primarly just music links that I share once in a while. I just don't take facebook all too seriously and don't care much for sharing things going on in my life on fb. Could be the same for her -- she doesn't care much about fb, but decided to use it for that purpose.

I wonder how they got Christiano Ronaldo to support this thing if it's a pyramid scheme.

(I don't know anything about herbalife and just checked their homepage that had a pic of Christiano Ronaldo right on the front)

i have a couple of friends involved with ViSalus, which is another one that is like this. they are pretty high up there now, i guess, but nothing but visalus this visalus that, and all of their posts and pictures are nothing but.

really sad. they also have wedding pictures with their visalus team or whatever lol

I had one guy on my friends list that was into Herbalife, but he was pretty bad at the sales pitch so it was pretty funny to read, actually.

its basically a cult. and they spend 80 hours a week doing it, yet boast about how much "money" they make...

This all sounds incredibly American.

Im Australian and it isn't. My girlfriend has a friend who is into this multi level marketing shit. She posts about "starting a new business" and how it's crazy that some people don't want to make money. She's clearly getting people telling her it's a scam but she isn't having a bar of it. She actually posted this video on her timeline. I was laughing my ass off along with my girlfriend.

I have a friend on FB that is constantly talking about some coffee she's selling. And every post from her is about some new person that QUIT THEIR JOB to come work with them selling this crap. It saddens me to see these people getting sucked in.

Its foolish to think it doesn't work. If it didn't work, it wouldn't exist.

Sure, it "works" in the sense that it successfully propagates by getting people to continually bring in more suckers because it will benefit them. And it "works" in the sense that the people near the top of the pyramid are probably doing ok money-wise.

It doesn't work particularly well for anyone else.

I make it a point to let them know they're subhuman trash. If they don't like it, they can just unfriend/block me. No big loss.

I had a friend approach me while I was out eating lunch regarding that WAKE UP NOW shit.

In order to be even remotely successful is to be an annoyingly aggressive scumbag piece of human trash. There are better ways to make money.

Yeah of course but thats the point isn't it? You're only really worrying about yourself while giving off the idea that you care about the suckers you bring in. This is pretty much the key to success in any sales position is it not? Give off the impression that your resolution works for both parties but really it only works out for you.

There aren't many rich people who thought of others a long the way.

Surely you jest. I'm in sales and when I'm selling something, IM SELLING A PRODUCT. It isn't even remotely the same thing. I don't sell someone on the idea of making money while I try to profit from them. I sell them a product that meets their needs and the outcome is beneficial for both parties.

You're selling a product that you SAY meets their needs and SAY the outcome is beneficial for both parties.

If it doesn't I quickly hear about it from the customer directly. And the product doesn't need any more work from the customer to reach its full potential or to even work in the first place. They also actually get something for their money.
Network marketing is selling empty promises for your own benefit. Having people chasing a carrot on a perpetually moving stick in the hopes of earning big bucks, when in reality they're simply lining someone's pockets who is WAY higher in the chain than they could ever hope to be.
Again, it isn't even remotely the same thing.
