A Life Well Wasted - episode 7 - Work

Holy crap -- I was absolutely certain that another episode of this show was never going to be produced. I actually deleted the feed from iTunes about a month ago, since it just seemed to be taking up space.

I am surprised as hell to see this. Can't wait to listen.

In a time when we're overexposed to voices we are sick of hearing from the industry, it's great to have Robert Ashley back.

Now work harder!

Nicest surprise I had in a long time.

So, so true.

Hey guys. Sorry to the folks who missed the poster. It's hard to triangulate the whole limited edition super special thing with proper fan service. It won't be possible to collect all the posters from the series going forward, but hopefully we'll make it so that everybody will have luck now and again.

Keep in mind, the more of this stuff I sell, the less time I have to actually make the show. Mailorder takes a ton of time. So there's some balance there too.

If that is the compromise, stop the poster sale thing immediately! hehehe Don't let this much time go without hearing from you. You were missed.

it's been so long i kinda forgot why i liked it so much but the episode brought it all back. the first two people had such interesting lives and hearing about the way they came into making games had me almost thinking about trying to learn programming myself in my spare time, then the ios developers story sobered that thought nicely. the ullillia part was just bizarre, in particular the bit about listening to the same song and only changing the speed, but also kind of endearing.

great production too, i should probably check out his band as i enjoyed all the music especially one piano piece in the final story.

Oh I get all that regarding the poster, just a little harmless ribbing. I'm thrilled people love the show as much as I do and they go so quickly! Time permitting, I hope you make more shirts! Would love to show my support more than I already have with your albums.

Just finished the episode and it was fantastic. I hope there's a Ulillillia b-side coming, could listen to him for hours. Or more Romero, he's always great. Listening to a new episode felt like going home again, please keep them coming.

Fantastic episode. My only comment is I wished they had a person reading the entries from ulillillia's website. Also, now I know how to spell ulillillia! Nick Smith was a great interview. I think my favorite parts were him explaining his name and his response to one of Robert's questions near end of the dream talk:

What is your favorite kind of dream?
The fun ones. Shouldn't that be obvious?

This is wonderful.... Literally the first episiode was the first podcast I got into after stumbling upon it looking at the itunes store

I'm so glad this is back! It even makes me a little nostalgic because I used to listen to this at my old job.
Now, I'm unemployed :\

And please, buy dude's music. It's dope.

I forgot how much I missed this. I listen to a lot of podcasts and this is the best produced. The editing of the interviews is impeccable. As one of those thousands of people making iOS games in his bedroom, the Gasketball interview almost game me a panic attack.

First time listening to this podcast and I have to say, the sound editing/mixing is amazingly well done. Having done an interview/audio editing project for a class last semester, it's amazing how many layers of sound each segment has. It's right up to par with NPR's stuff. It reminds me of This American Life but with video games/the game industry being the central theme.

The first dude's story was pretty cool and funny. John Romero's rise to success was extremely fascinating to listen to. The guy worked his ass off to the bone to achieve his dream. The iOS developers' story was pretty sad but everything is trial and error so hopefully they learned their lesson and keep making games. The last dude's interview was trippy, crazy stuff. I'm definitely looking forward to future episodes.

Definitely go back and listen to the previous episodes if you liked this one. The nature of this podcast means episodes really don't have an expiration date.

Other than John Romero I thought this was a pretty bland episode. I've loved all of the previous episodes. Maybe it's just me. Also WTF at that last guy?

I love the show, but I honestly think it feels over-produced at times. I'm glad that Ashley is a musician and can provide original music for every story, whereas This American Life over-relies on a back-catalog of about 10-20 licensed tracks that they use for every segment.

At the same time, not every interview has to have a pumping soundtrack. Sometimes you can just let people talk without music. The blaring tunes seem almost overbearing at points, particularly during the Romero interview.

I still listen to all of the episodes from time to time.

My favourite is The Death of EGM, Gotta catch'em all and the Why Game B-side.

They're all good in their own special way though.

Keep up the good work!

Wow, I had no idea a new one had been released until I just launched iTunes to listen to this week's 8-4. This was one of my favorite podcasts and I'm glad he's been able to find some time to produce a new ep. Looking forward to listening to it tonight.

I lost my shit at the lion sleeps tonight. I need to get around to re-listening to all of the GFW's. I'm almost ready.

Still fighting the good fight... I will keep my eyes peeled for them for sure.

I can't help but wonder how it would have gone for them if they had just released their game at $.99 and not tried to be clever with the upgrade options. It's hard to feel sorry for them in that segment.

Finally listening to this now. The background music is really distracting. Would love to have an alternate download with no music.

Yeah, seems a little overproduced to me, but maybe i'm just not used to it. I haven't heard this podcast before, but figured I'd give it a try.

Interesting so far, but the first segment seems way trippy.

Fascinating work. The insight into the lives of these people is enlightening, encouraging, heavy, depressing, illuminating and dizzying. Wow.
