A little Firefox bookmark to fix your gaf searching woes

So I was bored today and I figured I'd do something productive. Everyone hates gaf search, and a lot of you know that searching google is wayyy better. So I made doing that easier by way of firefox's keyword bookmarking system, so now all you have to do is type "gaf" and then whatever you want to search for in the address bar and you will get your results, easy as pie.

So here's how you do it.

First, go to your bookmark option up top and right click somewhere and click new bookmark then input this information

Name: Whatever you want
Address: http://www.google.com/search?q=site:neogaf.com %s
Keyword: gaf
Description: Thank you sp0rsk you are so nice.

And, voila, searching gaf through google just got easier.

If this is old, oh well, more people will know how to do it.

This is a little bit off-topic, but on the subject of GAF search: Google does not have accurate indexed results of all the GAF posts, especially not thise pre-2006. Coincidentally, GAF's search feature doesn't seem to want to find posts from before 2006. Is there any chance that this could be fixed, or is it deliberate?

Deliberate, for server load issues I believe?

There are so many less posts from pre-2006 than post-2006 by now that I don't understand why there would be significant server load issues though...

You're gonna have to take that up with mgmt.

this works with chrome as well. tools > options > manage (default search) and just add a new one.

Finally. GAF search is so retarded. 1 search for 60 seconds? I mean, WTF.

Maybe because GAF is FREE and there are many users and the server cannot too handle many searches at the same time? And then there are so many people who use Ad Block which further cuts into whatever little money GAF gets from ads already. How about you donate some of your money to GAF instead of calling it retarded?

Maybe if GAF actually asked for donations, people would donate. As it is, their "swag" store is like 4 years old. So no, I don't think blocking ads will hurt them.

Hmm.. I went a little overboard. I thought of sp0rsk's idea but decided to make a Firefox OpenSearch plugin instead. That way you can just use the Firefox Searchbox when you want to search. I also added in the parameters on Google to give you a dropdown menu to choose what time frame you want the search in. It defaults to "past week".

If EvilLore wants to add it to the NeoGAF site, all he has to do is add the following to the main forum index:

Code:
<link rel="search" type="application/opensearchdescription+xml" title="NeoGAF Search" href="neogaf.xml">

And of course, here's the xml file:

neogaf.xml:
Code:
<SearchPlugin xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/" xmlns:os="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/">

Once added there, you'd just be able to drop down the search plugin menu and "Add NeoGAF Search" or whatever. (It glows blue when there's a plugin available on a page/site)

Don't forget words that are too short/common or phrases that you know exist, but it won't pick up.

[edit] ...or threads/posts that are too old!

Hey, guys, a google site search box is coming to the site (in addition to the normal search) anyway as soon as *hint* *hint* *wink* *wink* is finished. FYI.

Gaffers today are so spoiled with the ads they get.

I only get like 3 different ads, and 80% of the time it's the one that says "WHY IS YOUR STOMACH FAT"

:/

I thought I was the only one to get that ad like 300 hundreds times per day. HOW DID THEY KNOW THAT MY STOMACH IS FAT!

Good job Schrade.

I thought everyone knew about Google search, so I didn't bother posting what sp0rsk did, but Schrade just pwned with his skills.

Thanks!

This is awesome! I have a quick search bookmark for Wikipedia but I never thought of having one for GAF.

On a side note: I have Adblock Plus enabled and it blocks all ads. Is there anyway to restrict it from blocking GAF ads only? I don't really mind the GAF ads but I do mind other ads, so disabling Adblock is out of the question.

Edit: I totally missed Schrade's post! Integrating that into GAF will save a lot of memory used by the search function and make it much more convenient to search.

Edit the 2nd:

I have to spend more time reading threads thoroughly...

And you can do this shit for every site. This feature has been around for eons.

1. You go to the site.
2. You enter your search in the google toolbar
3. You click the "Search only on the current web site" button

or

you just type at google's web page or any search text box that uses google:

site:<url of site> <terms to search>

example

site:www.netflix.com dark city

Click the dropdown. Check "disable for neogaf.com". :/

OK I added it to mycroft. I hadn't been there in a long time so I didn't know they had updated their site to support opensearch :) Heck I didn't even know it was still being updated...

Anyhow, if you go there and search for NeoGAF it should show up.

I've been wondering about that...ever since that huge thread.

Pretty handy Sporsk.

I use that same feature to (legally, believe it or not) download music from Google. :lol

I got this:

am I doing something wrong?

I'm getting error 405- The request method POST is inappropriate for the URL /search.
Edit: doh, see what you get for through the thread beyond the first few posts? beaten

Anyone try the new search plugin yet? If it works, click on that review link beside it and say it works. (Make sure you have the right one...)

Tested and reviewed, thanks :)

I've tested and reviewed it as well. I only saw one plugin there though, did you remove the faulty one? Probably, as the one I used worked. Good job.
