A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

I have my preferences set so I see 100 replies per page because I hate paging through the small pages at my computer. Scrolling to the bottom of a 100 reply page on the phone sucks, though. I mean I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure it's worse than waterboarding. Plz save secondapps :(

♫I got fiiiiiivvvveee on it♫ Or $10 or $15. Please don't make it an iPhone app; Palm Pre app only please.

All the non-iPhoners are getting jumpy that this shit's going native :lol

...relax!

I'm not sure how crazy your app is, but I'd be surprised if it took more than 100 MB of memory. Is this a Java app? If so: if it runs, you're golden. 100 MB is the default heap size for most J2EE JVMs, if I'm not mistaken.

If you're desperate, there's an app on the App Store called Forums. It's pricey, but it works with GAF. I'm posting with it now!

There's lots of annoying interface issues, but it's better than normal GAF Safari.

So this is why I couldn't access Mobile GAF at work. ;_;

I'll gladly donate a little bit of money to get this back up. I'd love a native iPhone app to start with but maybe it could move to other platforms like Blackberry and Android.

But can it show spoiler text?

I'm in for whatever. WHATEVER.

I'd pay $50 for a native iPhone app.

I'd prefer it stay a webapp.

Seriously, what advantages to you get from making it native?

As a web app, we don't wait 2-4 weeks for updates, we don't have to download it, it's not gatekeepered by Apple, and so on. As a webapp, it does what it needs, simple and elegant. I think it was perfect.

I concur.

Also, let me reiterate that if this comes down to a money thing, I can definitely donate. I love the secondapps NeoGAF!

I'll check with my host provider to see how much cpu time i can get and post back. That hosting is not in use so ill be all for the webapp.

Even if EvilLore was up for that, neogaf.com already has memory/cpu issues. I think he said it's a quad core server with 16 gigabytes of memory. If that machine is 500'ing every so often, adding additional PHP tasks for it to process wouldn't be the smartest idea.
It wouldnt make it any worse. The amount of people accessing from the a computer is massively higher than the amount accessing from a mobile device.

fuck, i knew this was bound to go tits up soon when i saw it ran through secondapps.. it was perfect and now its gone

I may start work on an android native app soon. Maybe I can get a dev team started on gaf.

Update

I've decided to migrate to MediaTemple's grid service. I already have the web app successfully running on them. Now, I'm just waiting for the secondapps.com DNS transfer to resolve. Don't get your panties in a knot just yet, folks. :)

PUT A PAYPAL LINK SOMEWHERE SO WE CAN SEX YOU WITH MONEY!

*hugs*

I'd be very happy to go through the code to see what can/can't be optimized. I'd also be happy to donate if it comes to that. I'm going to see what can be done about the hosting as well (all of us together will be able to bring back a bunch of options that way).

Edit: Great!

I don't really care, I wasjust stating what I'd be willing to pay. The benefit to it being a native app is that it's just parsing GAF, there's no potential for a crash like this again. But like I said before, I'm in for whatever.

EDIT: fuck, I forgot how hard posting on vanilla gaf was.

BTMash, I'm certain a lot of the code can be improved. Everyone here has been giving me more credit than I deserve. While I do build and maintain web sites for a living, my skills lie more in the design/html/css/concept area than actual sever-side coding. This is in fact the first big PHP thing I'd ever actually written.

Once I get the web app fully back up and running on MediaTemple, I'll start posting some sample code in this thread and we can all work together on improving its performance.

I don't want to just give out all the code for a couple of reasons, however. For instance, I prefer to keep this thing centralized so that we don't have to deal with versioning across multiple installs. Secondly, people DO log in to neogaf.com using my site as a proxy. I'd hate for some script kiddy programmer to figure out a way to use my code to do something malicious with my code. I hope that makes sense. Finally, I feel like I can maintain this project better if I just keep it all under my control.

I didn't know what was going on yesterday. I'm not sure what is says about me that losing my Gaf iphone app made such an impact on my day.

What is your full name/address/lawyer information so I can sue you for injuries sustained by crashing into hard objects while walking?

I use this site on my android phone and everything seems to be fine but when i try to post it shifts me off to the normal version of the site. I am sure this has something to do with the difference in browsers.

Hence the reason i will try to work on an android native app.

EDIT: and mobileterminal doesn't let me do a nslookup
