A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

ckohler you are the man. I've been using and loving this app on my touch for months. I've just had an odd problem recently. The app stops loading posts once it hits a post by some one on my ignore list. It goes right to the end of the page and gives me the "Prev Page" and "Next Page" buttons.

Update:

Welcome to post 1001! Version 2.4 is now live. This was mostly a complete rewrite of the parsing code to reduce CPU usage and solve the hosting issues. You'll be happy to know, it worked! Please keep in mind that due to the fact I've rewritten a big portion of the web app, there may be a slight display glitch here or there. I'll keep my eye out to fix these bugs as they surface.

NEW FEATURE
  • Quoted messages labeled as being written by you now appear highlighted green

BUG FIXES
  • Total rewrite of the page parsing. CPU usage has been dramatically reduced
  • Moved to a new web host (MediaTemple)
  • Spoiler text and small text should be working again

For those who are curious as to how much of an improvement the rewrites made, check out this graph. You can see that on Oct 29th, I put the changes into effect. I'm qiute proud of the difference, if I do say so myself. :D

You do fantastic work. I know I've said it before but it's always much appreciated.

Awesome work ckohler. You have genuine goodwill on these forums, which is a pretty amazing feat in itself.

Also, how the fuck does this man not have a tag yet?

Ckohler you are awesome. Im glad the rewrite helped things. I use it all the time. even more now that my computer is having over heating issues

its not a huge deal but on mobile is there a way to subscribe to threads?

Yeah he totally deserves a tag

Do webapps allow access to most of the APIs of the iPhone? If it allows access to accelerometer in webapps I woul really love to see a "shake to reload" function.

Keep up the good work as always and congrats on the streamlining. That's got to be satisfying! :D

I love this app, and I don't know if it's just me, but over the last few days I have been getting extremely inconsistent views when reading threads. Many times there will be, say, 70 posts in the thread when accessed on a pc, and will read as 70 posts on the webapp thread index, but only 5 posts show up. Is there something I am missing or is there a bug in your thread retrieval code? Seems too coincidental in alignment with the new version to just happen. Just inquiring. Keep up the awesome work.

I don't know about iPhone but Android does, they're called "Augmented Web Apps" and use the WebView UI widget. Of course, this means that an actual app would have to be made to take advantage of it...

Can either of you point me to an example thread where this is happening? Are you using an iPhone? I've not seen this happen.

It does look to be ignore-list related, but it also doesn't look like it happens 100% of the time. Here's an example screenshot. As a test, I put the person responsible for post #3 of this thread on my ignore list.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=379025

There are 41 posts currently. Here's a screenshot from my iphone (this is an iphone 3g, no funny business). When I refresh, I get the same thing.

Oh, might as well post a bug here.

I recently wrote a post in the dragon age thread. most of it was spoilered. on the web app, only the first spoiler paragraph was spoilered and the rest showed up as normal text! eek.

when i click edit in the webapp, the post cuts off mid sentence after the third or fourth paragraph, before the /spoiler tag is applied.

weird.

here is the post: note, DA spoilers there that you might see on the webapp.

I think I've fixed this issue. Let me know if it happens again.

Thanks. This has been fixed, also. Fixing this one required a semi-major change. Oh well. :)

This is not a bug. What is happening that your post is so long, the entire body does not fit within the textarea box. If you try to dragging your cursor past the last visible line, you'll see the rest of it (albeit slowly).

ckohler can you bring back the upside smiley when the 500 errors happen? That shit always me me :lol
Sure. I'll add it to the next update. By the way guys, the next version I'm going to roll out is BIG! Lots of new features are on the way. :D

Was there an option to go the last page of a thread?
When viewing from the thread list, just click the little ">" at the end of the thread title to go to the last page.

ckohler I cant thank you enough for your continued work on the gaf webapp. It's one of my most used app's on the iphone, appreciate all the effort you've been putting into this project of yours.

Thanks again.

I thought someone had made something that was an actual application?
yep, i think you have to jailbreak your phone/ipod to use it though. i think the webapp works pretty damn well as a full-fledged app

I think I found a bug:

When within a thread in the Online forum, if you select the "Forum" arrow at the top left of the page it'll take to the Gaming Discussions forum instead of returning you to the Online forum.

Otherwise, great app!

At some point wouldn't it be more productive to make native versions for iPhone and Android, etc?

How is it more productive? Waiting for Apple to approve the apps? Having users have to update?

With a webapp, it's live as soon as ckohler releases it, and EVERYONE gets it straightaway.

What benefits would being 'native' give it? I guess, perhaps no need to have a site to host it, but as it is, the experience is pretty much seamless.

Seriously. Just bookmark it and it sits on your home page just like an app.
