A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Ew ew ew.

I'd much rather have banner ads integrated into the threads.

Full screen ads that you have to click through are just awful.

Just looking to keep GAF afloat. Not sure how visible ads will really be so I don't know. Was just shooting out an idea, even if it was bad. =)

My problem is that its not directly integrated with the site like an app would be. If it were an actual app I would be able to click on a link in google and it would automatically take me to the web app version instead of the desktop version.

It's easier to develop a single web app than develop an app for Android, webOS, iOS, WP7, and BlackBerry.

The wheel doesn't need to be reinvented here, guys. Move it onto the GAF servers, throw a small banner ad at the top and bottom, integrate the new site features in, and we have a winner.

This, and getting rid of the iOS look would just be icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.

I don't want it to look like Metro. I just don't want it to emulate the look of iOS with its interface graphics. The rest of the web app can stay exactly the same for all I care.

I do have it turned off, but the ideal situation would be that the buttons didn't mimic iOS so I could turn them back on.
With no disrespect (I really like Windows Phone and the Metro design) it's not unexpected that the site would be designed to fit in with the most popular mobile browser.

The webapp has been pretty great and I don't see the need for an actual app. As long as the ads aren't super intrusive, I'm sure it'll remain awesome.

I love this app, I'm glad Evilore is taking this in the right direction and recognising ckohlers amazing work with this.

Must be getting much more of a pain bandwidth wise too.

No problem with ads to make sure it's kept the best way to view GAF on mobiles and tablets.

The Webapp is the best mobile browsing experience I've ever had. Its remarkably elegant and refined, and I'm very glad to see if being given an official status.

I don't know what happened. I can't post from the web app. Logged out and then back in.

Wow. The update destroyed the web app. So much is broken. :(

I've turned it back on and disabled all of the stuff I couldn't fix in the last three hours including:
  • Posting
  • Private Messages
  • Subscribing
  • More...
When I have more time I'll try and fix these. At least now we can at least (mostly) read the forums. You don't need to post every bug you find, I know they are out there. Parsing this site's HTML is such a royal headache.
:(

Totally agree. After Mail, it is honestly the single most important app on my iPod Touch. I've said it before in this thread, and I'll say it again. Thank you so much, ckohler.

As for how the site makes money, I still use the NeoGAF Amazon Affiliates link for all my purchases, if that's still active. (I know Amazon's nuked the program in some states, like here in Illinois.)

I use an android device, but figured I could post this in here since it refers to the web app.

Since GAF came back online from maintenance, I no longer have the "post" button on the web app. I've cleared all browser cache, logged out and back in, and still no go. What gives?

Look up.

See above. Posting is hosed for now...

Something like m.digg is fine. Please don't listen to Sentry with that native app bs. Not all of us are on iOS devices. The GAF webapp is the best mobile site I've ever used and I would honestly try and pay ckholer to develop it for another site I visit if I could. I used this on my iPhone, then Android, and now BlackBerry. I plan to use it on my Windows Phone whenever Nokia releases their phones here... The fact that it is browser-based is great.

Honestly Sentry, I don't think iPads really need this. This exists to make NeoGAF usable on small screens but the iPad screen is plenty big.

Nah, it's honestly a night snd day difference using your webapp versus the web forum on iPad.
Much much faster, less demanding of memory and battery, flushing reduced to a minimum, properly sized icon's hyperlinks, easier to customize and it has the awesome feature of highlighting your posts, even when they get quoted (that was a stroke of genius!).
Secondapps is the by far my most used "app" since buying an iPad, I couldn't do without it and it increased by 10 times how often I stay connected to the boards.
I'm ok with the ads, whatever it's needed to make GAF live without having to shut down secondapps is fine by me. In fact I think it was super cool of EvilLore to choose to see the potential and its role as an aide to get GAF on the go, instead of focusing more on the possible damage by losing ad revenue (most admins would have issues a cease and desist)
If there's a solution on the horizon then we have to embrace it, it's clear a paid app would nor work. Actually, I think I'm not alone in using GAF a lot more since buying a tablet, so that could help offset the forum's cost in a big way even if making the ads less obtrusive than those of neogaf.com

Don't forget the biggest benefit on an iPad is YouTube links show up as playable videos within the thread, and you can watch videos directly in the thread. Even better is you can start caching it while you're reading and then scroll back to it when it's loaded if it's taking longer. Wish I could get this on the iPhone.

Secondapps with "Go to first new post" would be a case of 'Just take my ad revenue".

It's the only reason I still use the main site on my tablet, but I know what interface I'd prefer to use.

It'll be fantastic to see Ckohler rewarded for his efforts. I'd love to swing him a few bucks to say thanks for the time/effort/server-costs etc, because I probably use GAF everyday of my life and much more than any other app on my phone. I'm sure the gratitude is heart-warming, but you deserve monetary reward.

If there's a way both GAF and Ckohler can benefit, that's even better.

Posted for new page.

I'm sure he is, but if he isn't I would gladly take up the torch. PM me ckohler if that is ever the case.

Also, I take a bit of an exception to it not being called an "actual" app, even by the developer. It is just as actual of an application as any you'll find. A website is just a term for a type of application, just like a coup is a type of automobile.

I think the word some people are looking for is "proprietary" app - that is, one built for a proprietary platform, instead of the open web platform.

Even then, the term isn't 100% accurate because you can build proprietary apps with open web technologies. For example, the Facebook iOS app is essentially a website wrapped in an Objective C shell. If ckohler upgraded his app a bit and ran it through PhoneGap, he would have a binary that he could put on every App Store/Market/World/Catalog/Etc.

Being simple isn't really an iOS thing. It's very well designed. The only thing that's really iOS is the button to log in.
Nope.

The best part of an official mobile app is that there would be no need for the gruesome and slow screen scraping.

The best method would be a mobile-oriented template made for the forum software GAF is built upon (vBulletin or some-such, I assume).

The current app isn't slow, but a dedicated template would be worlds faster.

Still can't log in and every thread/post is highlighted in green as if i'm the one who posted it. I guess i'll have to clear my cache/cookies. :(
