A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

I've got a much-needed request. I got the idea from the new YouTube webapp.

Please make it so that when I click the NeoGAF shortcut on my iPhone, it doesn't always open up a new tab. With the YouTube webapp, it simply reloads the YouTube tab that already exists. With the GAF app, if I navigate to any part of the site, then later click the shortcut icon again, it always opens up a new tab.

By the end of the day, I have about 6-7 GAF tabs open. =P

My thanks again. My web surfing habits have changed dramatically since I got iPhone such that I very rarely use my laptop anymore to surf the web.

Webapp makes it super easy to surf and post on GAF. My thanks.

What's up with the inability to login? When I try it, it simply loops back to the forum selection page without actually logging me in. Any thoughts?

Clear all your cookies and stuff.
No luck.

Also, if I attempt to hit "settings" it pops up a message stating...

"Safari cannot open the page because too many redirects occurred"

If I browse the forum and hit reply it will actually open up the regular GAF site reply function instead of the mobile site with my user logged in.

Very odd.

I have no idea, dark10x. Only you are experiencing these issues so it must be on your end. Maybe your using a proxy, or have cookies turned off, or your iPhone is messed up.

I've had an iPhone 4 for a few weeks now... my first smartphone.
It took me all of 2 days to discover this secondary (and very much optimal) method of browsing GAF from my new mobile.

All I can say is well fucking done, and thank you so much.

That said, I've recently switched from Safari to A Perfect Browser, and the NeoGAF app's interface doesn't really play all that nicely with APB's minimal view. Do you think that's something that you could look into?

No big deal if you can't, as the interface niggles aren't terrible.
It just means that I have to be extra precise in order to not hit one UI's buttons instead of the other's. There's a bit of an overlap there.

This happens to me, too. In fact, when I tried quoting your post just now it directed me to the normal log-in page. It only works if I log-in from the main menu.

In other words, it's not just you.

That particular thing is intentional. It's not a bug, it's a feature. It let's people who want to post from the web app without logging into it do so by sending them to the official site to log in there so they can post there.

Before the web app supported logins, that was the only way it worked.

Just like to say thanks to whoever developed this app.

It's been a life saver on my Windows Mobile phone, and makes browsing gaf easier to do on my Omnia, than my laptop :D

ckohler,

I don't know if you've seen sites similar to this, but they seem to do some animation work that's incredibly smooth and makes it feel as though it's an actual App that's simply tunneled through Safari. Hell, I don't even know if it's possible to apply to the GAF webapp seeing as how GAF is a more dynamic situation, rather than that website which is static. Just figured it should be brought to your attention.

And, of course, you can never be thanked enough for the Web App as is. It's absolutely incredible.

That looks like something jQTouch does. I used jQTouch in my Giantbomb webapp (check it out if you want) but purposefully disabled animations since it made the app not feel as responsive, especially on Android. I don't really think the NeoGAF app needs animations, but that's up to ckohler :P

Yeah, of course. Like I said, I have no idea how these things work, but it works well enough on that site that I figured the information was worth at least passing on.

It would be the end of 3g-ers being able to use webapp, that's almost certain. The phone chugs like a mofo as is, it'll probably jump out of my hands and run to the apple store screaming whatever-the-chinese-equivalent-to-the-word-"help" is while leaving a trail of smoke and tears in the process.

I've seen that. Threads are just too big and filled with to many images for that to work smoothly. Also, that kind of thing only works when every request is done via AJAX. This web app doesn't use AJAX, except for the "load more posts" feature.

Love your MiniBomb webapp, btw. :D

on my Pixi(webos with webkit browser), it doesn't load new posts after I reply(I can't see my own either), and the refresh button doesn't do much. Choosing the page number also appears to be broken. App is fantastic on my iPod, not so much on webos. would love to see it work on my phone :)

Hey. There's seems to be something horribly wrong with the web app.

Edit: cleared the cache. All good now.
My app seems to be fine. What's happening on your end?

Edit; Ah, righto. :)

ckohler, awesome work on the app, I use it all the time on mah iPod. :)
Quick q though, are there plans for some sort of Search Threads tool? Googling for certain threads puts the display format back into regular computer mode, I'd love a way around that. :D

Ckholer, an idea. If someone links to a different neogaf in a thread if you're using the web app can you make it so it comes back to the web app instead of the regular website?

I'm sure you are aware of this issue bit I seem to be having problems with the spoiler function. When pressing the button in landscape mode it places the keyboard in portrait but clips the right half of the keyboard as if it'd still in landscape.

When pressing the spoiler button in portrait the space bar and bottom row keys are all missing.

Using an iPhone4 with stock browser.

I just got myself an iphone, and I'd like to chime in and say this is godlike. Thank you so much ckohler! I'd happily pay money for an actual app of this.

Yeah, if Evilore, ckohler colaborated they should come out with a neogaf app for the app store, I'll gladly pay for it.

Wow, I somehow had no idea this existed until today. I'm using it on a BlackBerry Curve 8530, which has neither a touch screen nor a WebKit browser, and it still makes NeoGAF a better experience in the native browser than using the non-mobile site in Bolt. Great work. My only real complaint is the absence of a "go to last unread post" or "go to last post" option.

you've been able to do this for a long while. Zombie James's webapp has been around since spring, I think.

oh, and the normal giantbomb webpage will serve up html5 video if you tap play. that's been around for a couple months now. so it works just fine on any mobile device (but finding videos is easier with the webapp)
