A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

I don't agree with the menu being at the bottom. I prefer it at the top where people expect it to be.

What does everyone else think about Copernicus' suggestion of swapping the "Go To Page" and "Compose" buttons? I like how keeping all the navigation controls all grouped together. It also makes it easier to code because I they don't have to change their layout based on if you are logged in or not.

The way you have the paging setup makes sense right now. On a single line you have:

<- Previous - Jump To - Next ->
_____________________Reply

It would be odd for it to change to:

< - Previous - Reply - Next - >
___________________Jump To

Paging controls all on one line, composing on a separate.

If anything I think that having reply at the top AND bottom makes sense (the same way that GAF prime has it set up). Not sure if that means you crowd up the title bar area or build in reply controls to the menu area or have a new line for the reply controls...but getting reply at the top would probably address the problem.

I'm fine with just leaving reply exclusively at the bottom because philosophically it doesn't make sense to reply to a thread you haven't read yet. Just tap the thread title to jump to the bottom and reply if you need to.

Just think that layout doesn't really accommodate the reply button at the top anywhere.

I like the navigation buttons how they are currently in the mockup. I would leave them as they are.

Having the quick links at the bottom would eliminate one tap in between threads when browsing when going through your subscriptions, for example. That's my main reasoning behind that part.

I figured the grouping of the reply button would cause an issue with the code.

It just seems more sensible to group things by common uses rather than functionality type, especially for small screens.

One tap isn't a big deal and people aren't going to think to look at the bottom for a menu. Most mobile sites put their menus at the top. I prefer it.

It would. I reuse that function in a lot of places, some where you can't compose. Also, users not logged in can't compose which changes it also.

It's not that bad. Also, consider that the majority of GAF's visiters probably never bother posting.

What menu and what phone are you using?

Samsung galaxy s2.
Basically the main menu (gaming, off topic, messages) stays on screen after clicking gaming or off topic for example
I click gaming
The gaming board loads but the prior list of boards is overlaid on top of the topics in gaming.
Next time it happens I'll do a screenshot. As a developer I know they help....but being a new URI being loaded I'm not sure why the data is even there, unless there's some weird phone caching going on.

Edit.
I also think your previous, go to and next buttons could be a touch smaller.

I agree that the reply button seems a tad divorced from the rest of the thread and should be where the refresh/goto/prev buttons are. Not sure what I'd swap it with though.

anyway to go to last page of a thread with this? Opening a subscribed thread opens to the first page, would be a bit ridiculous to manually go through 80+ pages.

The little > at the end of the thread title in your subscribed threads.

The > goes to the last read post by default.

You can also go to the last page by pressing the Go to page button and the pressing "Last Page" in the thread.

So guys, I just bought an iphone. But I've noticed it doesn't have that "smooth scrolling" in Safari like it used to have on my ipod touch. You know like you flick your finger and it keeps scrolling. (Momentum scrolling?)

What gives?

I don't remember it ever scrolling differently.. there is a Cydia tweak that adds more momentum to scrolling (forgot what it's called), maybe you had that installed?

Nope.

For example, in opera mini the scrolling works like I remembered it. It's smooth and fast. I can scroll to the bottom of the page in one flick with my finger.

In Safari I really have to scroll in small "steps". Very frustrating. :/

Well it's weird, when I'm scrolling in menus and in Opera Mini, it's very smooth. Maybe it's all in my head. :(
Compare it to scrolling in Mail or Contacts to get a better comparison. It's possible that Opera Mini implements its own scrolling mechanism, as many applications have on the Web (e.g. Gmail Mobile).

Mockup Update

New stuff:
  • Viewing Private Messages added
  • New PMs badge appears in JumpTo menu
  • Locked threads now indicated by icon
  • Fixed a bug with list groupings
  • Links in tags to GAF posts stay in web app
  • Multi-quote icons no longer ugly
  • Multi-quotes expire after 15 minutes
  • Other fixes

Left to do:
  • Composing/Replying to PMs
  • Subscribing to threads
  • Viewing thread top posters
  • Viewing all active users

Didn't say that I didn't like ads, if done right.

What I don't like, however, are ads that try to trick you into clicking them by looking like something else. To me, this is malicious and has no business on this site.
I'm with you on that.

Don't get the replies you're getting.

Ads that trick you are common but that doesn't mean you have to like them. They suck and you're totally right in that it's shady practice.

When typing a post, there is no cancel button. Is that to be added or do we just hit the back button? I kind of forget I'm in a browser when using the web app.

Awesome updates, ckohler! I've been using the mockup site exclusively for the last week or so. The new features are a godsend.

Or you can tap the NeoGAF logo. It is a back button in most all places.
After posting, it returns you to the top of the page instead of the bottom.
Not much I can do about this. Sorry. It'd be complicated to change that behavior.

Thanks! Please everyone keep testing.

ckohler: any insight into the type of input field used when replying? I think this is the issue with the ICS browser not allowing auto correct. It's probably an OS bug, but I'm still curious as to how the field is set.

I'm glad people are suggesting black/dark theme. Will save precious battery life.

I honestly think the web app looks pretty freaking boss right now on the iPad. The only thing that sticks out really badly is the little bike ad! I want a LONG bike ad so it looks right!

How you liking the new ipad dub? Like, imagine it wasn't you but me.

I like the small ad. Less accidental taps on it the smaller it is.

Honestly? It's just a new iPad. The screen looks way better... but otherwise it's just another iPad.

Dictation is amazing though. I've been using it to reply to every single GAF post for the past three hours. Makes me way more chatty…

… Oh! And having LTE on something is freaking crazy! I had no idea what I was missing.

Do you ever use the ipad for displaying print stuff (aside form books), that's something I do all the time on my tablet, and I'd love to have a higher res display.

I'm always mind blown by lte speeds, but I doubt I'd get a connected tablet anytime soon, I'm a " pin offline" dude.

All the reading I'm doing on this thing is either through iBooks or through a news aggregator like Zite or Reeder. Text clarity is the killer app on the new iPad.

The web app looks glorious!

I have to say the mockup is pretty great, awesome stuff from ckohler.

Dont know if it was answered before, but why is the bike ad there? It doesnt take me anywhere, and it's an apparent blemish on what is essentially an excellen design.

Place holder ad until the mockup is finished and official.
