A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Thanks for the suggestion Sentry but I can't say I'm a fan. The pagination controls need to be consistant throughout the app. I want them to be the same regardless of what you are viewing (thread/forum/private messages). The same goes for the compose button. It's in the same place everywhere. Currently, the pagination controls work everywhere. It's one simple function and are universal.

Other options would be to have a grey bar below the pagination buttons (but above the ad space) that has "Subscribe" and "Top Posters" as links in it similar to the current web app or to have a second button beside the compose button in the footer that does both subscribe and view top posters.

Also, I'd really appreciate it if one of you guys would mockup a Dark theme like I requested (just leave the header, footer and linen areas untouched; those should remain the same). This would save me a lot of trial and error trying to make it look the way you want because honestly, I'm not really sure what you're wanting. Something about it being black to save battery but white on black can look pretty janky, imo.
Hmm, that makes some sense. I still think there could be some way to eliminate the extra tap to access those extra pagination options, but that wasn't the point to begin with of course.

That (grey bar) actually sounds like the best way to do it, in order to keep it separate from the pagination controls and consistent across multiple views.

I'd take a shot at that dark theme mockup, but tbh I was never a fan of it and prob. wouldn't use it, so i'm not sure i'd be good at judging what others want it to look like.

Absolutely great work Chris, but I have to say that the multiquote button works better where it was before, it actually encroaches on the longer funny tags now on iphones. I know it's ridiculous, but tags are entertaining to read here.
Yeah, it would be neat if there was a way to display the full tag by tapping on that general area, but I think that'd prob. be too much work for something so trivial.

A better solution would be to use the smallest font size possible on tags exceeding the allotted space.

Until people start saying they can't figure out how to reply, I'm not convinced there's a problem with where it's at. It's not like it's hard to find or hard to reach.

First time I wanted to post from the webapp I was a little confused. Obviously since I know where it is, it's not a problem.

Regarding the dark theme: Make sure it doesn't use pure white on black, but rather something like an 80-90% white. That's horribly annoying for your eyes (I wouldn't be using a dark theme though).

The drop shadow on that button text should be gone now if you refresh. Also, what's that weird browser? Is that Safari on iPod? Whatever browser that is, it's bad at rendering text-shadows.
Speaking of the shadows, why is it that the text shadow for the header and footer bars are shifted two pixels to the left?

I'm assuming the look trying to be pulled off is the classic text indention style in most iOS header bars, but that axis shift sort of ruins the illusion, especially next to the indention look of the grid/post buttons.

The opacity should also be 10-15% less to give it a better indention appearance. A bit nit-picky, but the shadowing style just stands out next to the perfect button/n-ball/arrow indention shadows.

First time I wanted to post from the webapp I was a little confused. Obviously since I know where it is, it's not a problem.
I'd almost be inclined to say that a little effort before making a post isn't too bad of a thing. :p

I think it's Grazing.

It is.

OK, I don't really know what I'm doing with this stuff, but I made an attempt at a dark theme, just messing with the CSS colours:

If people don't hate it I can try to do the forum/profile/whatever views tomorrow.

Apart from the weird fonts (assuming that's android browser stuff), that looks great imo. I might even be inclined to use something like that on certain occasions. I hope the black theme beggars dig this.

font needs to be white for better readability in low-backlight/battery saving situations

I liked the old version :P Is there anything functionally new in this version, or is it mostly style changes?

too much learned behaviour required. Old version had a reply button with 'reply' in it, new one has a speech bubble with a + in it which I've never seen used anywhere as meaning reply; backtracking in the site is the site icon which isn't obvious; next/previous page buttons seem a bit 'basic', although maybe previously they were too 'ios'; jumping to the top/bottom of the page is done by hitting the title bars with no indication that this is what will happen - previous version had a little arrow to help you understand; reply button is still too far to the right for the vita - you tend to have to 'peck' at it to avoid hitting one of the vita browser menu buttons which are right next to it

Sorry if this sounds overly negative, its mostly a bunch of little things, and I hope they're constructive criticisms. We'll all learn to use it, but it might be a bit confusing to new users - especially if Evilore starts redirecting mobile browsers to it automatically. I still love the webapp and the work you've done on it.

I mentioned all of these things a few pages back. :/
I am with you.

Off the top of my head; multi-quote, view all members online, view top posters in a thread, view/link to single posts, manage subscriptions, and probably more stuff that i'm not thinking of at the moment.

But all that doesn't even matter next to the biggest change; ads. With the inclusion of ads, this site will become the official mobile directory of GAF, i.e. all you have to do is go to neogaf.com on a certain device and you'll get redirected automatically. This is huge, especially makes things simple when tapping on NeoGAF links from a mobile device.

I just don't get the complaints. You know what the reply button is, what's the big deal there? Is it that hard to compute every time you want to post, how to do it?

The only thing I get is the fact that there is no indication that the top/bottom bars serve as quick jumps to the bottom/top of the page. There is enough space for, in the board views at least, a small down/up triangle can be placed to the left of the post/grid buttons. There wouldn't be space for it when you're in a thread, but at that point, you would have learned about the functionality already, so it will be a given.

Lol, actually the only thing that mrklaw mentions that you did as well, is the bars being used as quick jump buttons. Everything else is different. :p

Not complaints, feedback. Just because you're used to how something works, that doesn't necessarily mean it's perfect. I'll be happy once the black theme is enabled because I know how to use the mobile site. However, with it becoming the official gaf mobile browsing experience, a lot of new users will be directed to it and won't know what does what.

I agree 100% I appreciate all the work! I however can't stand the mockup at all.

once they force the change I will probably switch to the normal site.

Jesus. I swear no matter how hard I try to please you guys...

Evilore, please chime in on your opinion. I was under the impression all these design changes were improvements based on all the positive feedback and suggestions I'd been getting from users but now it seems people are complaining it's changed. :p

don't take it the wrong way or personal. You work hard and if the feedback coming in is mostly positive then don't listen to a few people that prefer the old design.

there will always be people like me.

Except for the reply button, everything is a massive improvement. All the "hidden" things people are complaining about being hidden can be resolved with an "intro" page on first visit, and a quick "faq" for future reference.

sorry, I really didn't want it to come across as negative. Its just feedback. You'll always get someone that doesn't like it, no way to please everyone :)

I agree we'll all learn, and many of the things (like the top/bottom jump) are nice to haves that people can discover - just that a tone of people are going to land on this site once its official, so the more obvious the better, right?

don't take this the wrong way.

these complaints some of us have are extremely nit-picky for the lack of a better word.

your work is amazing and appreciated.

If no one had used the shit out of the current version, all these complaints wouldn't exist. It's hard to part ways with old habits due to design changes.

This. I have said before that I love it, just some feedback was all and it could be solved with an intro/faq/whatever.

The mockup is awesome stuff, all I wanted was 'go to first new post' and I got that and so much more. (the new menu, allowing me to jump straight to gaming ot or subscribed threads is the greatest thing ever)

If you are blasting the backlight that is correct. But who is using their phone at 100% brightness?
*raises hand* :p Though i'm not into using dark themes anyway, generally speaking.

Good point, but other than the jump to bottom/top bars, I don't see anything that really isn't self explanatory (even the post button in the bottom corner).

I think the fact that the feedback/complaints are extremely trivial just goes to show how near-perfect it is, tbh. Plus there will always be some who don't like change, especially if they're so used to the previous way.

I had a "fear of change" dislike at first, but it's grown on me. I do love all the new functionality. My only issues are nit-picks. I don't like the blue text on the main forum pages, and the prev page/refresh buttons and stuff should be below the white page instead of sitting on it.

Great work, Chris. Very much appreciated.

Mimics GAF Prime, I like it better than just plain boring black.

I prefer the new version to the old one and it's mainly due to the menu button on top and the multi quote functionality. plus the option to go to "last read" instead of "last page" when clicking a thread arrow. three features I take advantage of every time I use the app.

It seems like there are some issues that come naturally from a touch interface when there are no obvious icons present. like the "jump to bottom" or "jump to top" features. how many times have people asked about that in this thread? those blue bars should have an arrow or triangle icon to guide the user to press them when the app gets released officially.

I like the way the page navigation buttons work and i think the new reply/ new post buttons are fine where they are. I also think the icons are OK. a speech bubble seems obvious enough to me. (maybe the plus icon makes it too busy? I don't know)

there may be small tweaks here and there as the thing evolves but it seems pretty great to me now.

Yeah, to be honest though, I barely noticed that it was blue. It's such a dark shade it doesn't really impact anything from a visual standpoint. If it was light blue, it'd be a different story.

Come to think of it, I remember people complaining about the dark blue thread links used for the GAF-prime revamp way back, and now it's a complete afterthought.

My only suggestion in regards to pagination would be t revert back to the two-button Next/Prev. page style, and have three buttons below it always visible (last/first pg & goto page box in the middle).

You're right, ckohler. You can't please everyone. That being said, I am very pleased with both the design and functionality of the mockup. It's a marked improvement over the original and much more consistent with the look of the full site.

Chris: mostly great.

-I would like to see a single press to switch between gaming and off topic if possible, some sort of ui element to the right of the left arrow in the header probably, that lets you swap between them on a press instead of menu--->press. Maybe nitpicky but that allows for smoother workflow without having to hit back as much or access the menu as much, and there's space.

-I struggled to find the new thread/reply button for thirty seconds or so. It feels hidden.

Re: the feedback in this thread, use what you think are good ideas, disregard complaints that are a matter of taste rather than practicality. The presentation and color scheme look great and are necessarily evocative of gaf prime.

dear ckohler,

your app is a great piece of work, as is the "mockup" version. I, for one, appreciate your efforts very much and thank you a lot for it. You Rock! :)

rest of posters, show this man some respect please.

I can imagine that being nesecarry for someone like you who probably jumps between both very frequently, but it doesn't seem like most really need that.

I'm just trying to picture a way that could be done and still look good/consistent with the whole arrow menu bar design, and it doesn't seem like it'd end up looking good or even apparent to what it should be.

PS. Isn't ckohler going to be developing/integrating mod/admin tools for threads and such? Perhaps a feature like that could be reserved to moderators.

If anything could use the elimination of an extra tap though, I think it should be the goto/last/first page buttons rather than one-tap OT/gaming jumping, but that's just me.

Ckohler, I think the mockup is good. I appreciate the work you have put into this. My problem is that its new and a little different. I will get used to it. Also, its still blurring as a reference to my last post.

Some more dark theme:

The bluish shades for some of the text elements are pretty much total guesses, I have no idea if there's a proper way to pick a colour that matches. I had a quick go at the highlighting for your own posts but it looked like bile so I stopped... may try again later. The first-unread-post arrows probably need something done to them. I didn't want to get into trying to theme the various inputs on the search page.

ckohler, if this is useful at all to you I can send you the css file I've been editing (or just copy out the changed parts and send you that).

Ckohler - I like the improvements. Forgive me if this has been asked before, but have you given any thought to the ability to jump directly to the first unread post in a subscribed thread?

On Gaf-proper you hit the "neogaf" icon next to the thread; is it feasible to implement something similar to your app?

Press the arrow next to the thread title. If it doesn't take you to the first unread post there's an option to configure what it does in the preferences, although it's referred to as 'last unread post' for some reason.

The light blue color is a little bit off, but i'm not sure what would look good tbh. Other than the weird looking arrow buttons though, it looks fine to me!

All you have to do is tap the arrow on the far right side, and it takes you to the last unread post. Not sure if it's enabled by default, but you can enable/disable it in the settings.

[edit] lol, beaten!

Just sayin'

This also takes into account not mixing logged in with non logged in code.

You can also just make the button on the bottom a "custom" button for each user to customize a quick jump to anything (ot, gaming, subs, pms, etc), that'd solve my need for jumping back to subscriptions, as awell as evilore's for a quick jump between forums.

ckohler,

I want to chime in also and say good job on the mockup. It's really appreciated. I would have been happy with "go to first unread" functionality, but all the other features have been awesome.

I will say I agree some of the criticisms, particularly about the reply button. I think the word "Reply" needs to be in there someway. The functionality of navigating back to whatever section you are in could also be more pronounced, but it's workable how it is now IMO. Everything else is just fine and not a big deal once to you get to really using the app.

Hmm, I personally like having the post button as an actual button with focus, and not stuck with the pagination stuff, but this makes some sense as well. All you forgot is the 'view thread posters' option. :p

Oh muh gah! Fantastic, thanks! I didn't notice this in the Mockup.
