A prequel starring a young Tifa who must fend for herself while adjusting to her new life in Midgar, overcoming her recent trauma and meeting up with Barret to join his resistance is a story I've wanted to see for a while.
This probably won't be that.

The only FF prequels I'd be interested is a prequel of FFIX, set during
. Also, would love it to be handled by a bulk of the classic FFIX team(Itou included, probably get Itahana on boards, and contract Minaba as well).
That or one featuring the heroes who eventually took down Jenova for the first time(sealing it in the geological stratum thousands of years ago). I always figured that even, like FFVII, featured a band of Cetran heros facing the odds and using their special powers to defeat Jenova and those tainted by her. I'd actually find that pretty interesting. Though, given Square, they can't have a FFVII game that doesn't at least acknowledge fan favorites like Cloud. That would be sacrilege to fanboys!

Probably not going to be Lightning. But damn, I really wish it was. The XIII saga really has some of the most interesting prequel potential out of all the games I've played in the FF series. The death of Etro and the creation of the human race. The War of Transgression. The height of the l'cie, in numbers and in cruelty. The creation of Cocoon as Lindzei rips apart Pulse and steals raw materials from the wreckage. Fang and Vanille launching their first attack on Cocoon and ripping a giant hole in it as Ragnarok. Caius and Yeul when they actually lived in Paddra. So much potential.

But Xenosaga series is there as prequels...
Xenosaga is a slightly-retconned trilogy based on the original idea for Xenogears Episode I.

Based on Final Fantasy VII Disc 1, 2, and 3. Remake that is a prequel to the long-planned FFVII sequel.

Ahhh, I eagerly await the FF XIII Sequel Trilogy, in which we focus our journey on Thunder, son of Lightning (because thunder always comes after lighting. KA-CHOW!), only like a similar other sequel in development at the moment, you'll see her front and centre, through and through.

Anything but FF13, I'll take a mobile prequel to All the Bravest before another FF13 game. I love to joke about the game and stuff, but making another three more games about that would be suicide, seeing the sales decay from FF13 to LR.
Also, this is a bit selfish but I wouldn't want them to do anything with FF6, not because I don't like the game, the opposite, I love it. But seeing how Square is today, they would just fuck everything and make a mess, so my hopes are for KH prequels and FF7-10 prequels.

Prequel of Crisis Core where you play as Sephiroth/Angeal/Genesis where they just started their SOLDIER career. The game features character switching like GTA V with the whole Midgard as the open world area.

As much as I would LOVE to see Xenogears in all it's glory, it'll never happen without Takahashi (as was mentioned before).
Xenocross is hopefully his chance to start that universe over.

I guess it's because SE likes to put 1080p CG movies into their games so with the current trend of increasing size of data in a game, they will likely run out of disc space unless they implement multiple discs.

I have wanted Final Fantasy VII: Wutai Wars for a long time. Tactics RPG made by Matsuno. But it will never happen
I don't know if they can further expand their backstories. And even 2 of the trio (Angeal and Genesis) does not have an interesting backstory
aside from being Project G babies like Sephiroth.
